"Eccentric theme restaurants dot the Asian landscape, focusing on everything from cats to toilets to robots, but only Bangkok’s Cabbages & Condoms brings an obsession with prophylactics to the table. Founded by politician and family planning activist Mechai Viravaidya (who is also known by the nickname “Mr. Condom”) the large restaurant was opened next to one of the few family planning clinics in Bangkok that offers abortions for the impoverished women in the community. While pregnancy termination is allowed by law in the city, it is often thought to be illegal and contraceptive measures, in general, are often seen as taboo, thus Viravaidya started his restaurant with the intention of raising understanding and acceptance of birth control (as well as to serve food). This devotion to the titular form of protection can be seen in the ubiquitous condoms decorating almost every corner of the eatery. From the small gift area near the entrance featuring informational pamphlets on family planning and a visual guide to varieties of condoms to mannequins covered in dresses made of prophylactics and studded by birth control pills, diners are surrounded on all sides by rubber reminders of safe sex. Lampshades, wall decorations, and even Christmas tree trimmings are constructed out of the proverbial raincoats, giving guests no place to rest their eyes that doesn’t have some playful new use for the protective device. Then at the end of the meal, diners are given their own condom in lieu of dinner mints. While the almost cartoonishly overblown presentation of condoms in the restaurant seems silly, the purpose is to make the otherwise taboo item more mundane and less exotic, and the gambit seems to be working. Along with a number of other initiatives begun by Viravaidya, Cabbages & Condoms has contributed to a staggering decrease in children being born to Bangkok families. In addition, the restaurant itself has become so successful that the brand has been expanded to include a hotel and franchise locations reaching as far as the United Kingdom. Great atmosphere and decorations! Very creative! Most of the decorations were made of colorful condoms. Menu had a lot of choices, including a few vegetarian options. All clearly labelled. And the spiciness level was indicated. We especially liked the fried corn. The staff was super friendly. Food arrived quickly. Prices were OK. Location was good, a lot of signs to indicate where to go. I can recommend this place. They also have a small gift shop with some nice souvenirs - worth checking out as well.

This was recommended by my tour guide and was a little hesitant bc of the name. There are condoms everywhere and it kind of smells like latex when you walk in, but you get used to it quickly.. the food was really yummy, I had the pad Thai and mango rice and the starter chips were so good too. The food came out in lighting speed and the service was great. Would definitely recommend!

I love the concept of this place, the food was also great with a wide menu with something for everyone. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, the students and trainee especially were so friendly and made it an amazing experience. The gift shop is fantastic and the ladies working there were incredibly sweet just like the lady working at the door. Will be recommending to others and come back!

The pork skewers with peanut sauce (one of the appetizers, forgot the Thai name) was delicious! The meat itself was well-seasoned and perfectly grilled, and the peanut sauce was a perfect companion. Would get again!

From the moment I stepped into Cabbages and Condoms, I was enveloped in an atmosphere that was both inviting and intriguing. The restaurant’s unique concept, which supports family planning and safe sex practices, is not only commendable but also creatively integrated into the décor. The dining experience was nothing short of spectacular. The menu, a delightful fusion of traditional Thai flavours and modern culinary techniques, offered a variety of dishes that catered to all palates. The Pad Thai was a symphony of taste and texture, while the Green Curry had just the right balance of spice and coconut milk richness. Cabbages and Condoms is a must-visit for anyone seeking an exceptional meal in Bangkok. It’s a place where every bite brings a blend of exquisite flavours and the satisfaction of supporting a noble initiative.

Very Fun dining experience. Street level restaurant ,no steps . Inside and very beautiful outside dining . Great Thai foods not spicy. I asked to make spicy. Excellent staff !! Easy to find Asok BTS and MRT walking distance. Reasonable prices for being city center . Def recommend if your in Bangkok.

Avoid this place like the plague! After eating in hundreds of Thai restaurants across the country over the years this was the worst food experience of them all. The staff, restaurant and location are all good and the cause is commendable but the food is woefully bad. Papaya Salad with rubbery out of date dried shrimps, bland totally overpriced fish cakes, the weirdest tasting green curry ever made and then the what on earth was that crab dish which was a combination of rotten crabmeat, what tasted like congealed British Chinese restaurant curry sauce and literally a tub of oil. Not only was it rancid but it was all relatively expensive considering the quality and my partner has had severe sickness and diarrhoea for the last 15 hours. Simply cannot understand the positive reviews of this place

Stumbled upon this place in my search for different spots around Bangkok. It’s just about 200m from the bustling mall and station. I stopped in for a quick treat. I knew after seeing the reviews that it’d be on the higher price range of local food, so I opted for some coconut ice cream instead. The space is massive, with a great atmosphere, waterfall wall, and plants all around. It was a nice way to take a beat after walking around all morning - plus the coconut ice cream was delicious! I definitely recommend coming and checking out the gift shops, condom art and a nice bite to eat!
