I stayed here for 2 weeks while attending a course that was held in University of Otago in mid November. The motel itself is nice and clean. The motel owners were very nice although I did not have much interaction with them. They have a dog and a cat that you can occasionally see. The location is great and the price is decent.
I did arrive after 7pm so the front desk was already closed. I had to wait around for 10mins until someone noticed me and was kind enough to call one of the owner for me. At the time I don't have local NZ sim card to call. Apparently they did try to call me and was unable to reach me as it was an Australian number. It would have been great if they tried to text me (receiving sms is free even for international number) or even email me.
Looking at another review, seems like the owner usually will give you a small bottle of milk on arrival for your coffee/tea during check in. However because of my late check in, they have already put in the milk in the fridge for me. Notably, the milk bottle was a clear glass bottle with no label at all, so at first I didn't know whether it's the complimentary milk or something that was left from previous guest. it would have been better if they can label it or leave note informing me.
In any case, my first night was on a weekend and I believe that was the last week of the university term before they go into summer break. There was a couple of uni flats around the property and they were very noisy on the first weekend I stayed there. Thankfully there was no noise issue for the remainder of my stay.
See detailed review below for the room and other particulars. Overall my stay there was positive and I would come back and stay there again.
If I have to give some feedback, here are the things which can be improved:
- The water pressure for the shower was atrocious, I actually needed to remove the shower head just to get decent enough flow.
- The way the tub is positioned, the water just pools on the side and from there it drips down the corner, then onto the floor, making my shower mat wet (and yes I did use the shower curtain properly).
- The two chairs in the living area desperately need to be replaced, the seat cushion just sink and it was not comfortable at all and will not give you any support.
- The light bulb for the "reading lights" above the bed need to be replaced, only 2 out of 6 available bulbs are working.
- The complimentary milk should be labelled. Nothing fancy, a dry erase marker on the bottle should suffice, or maybe leaving a note (in case it was left in the fridge like mine did)
- The housekeeping is inconsistent. I am uniquely qualified to rate on the housekeeping as I stayed for 14 nights. While the condition of the room was very clean when I arrived, the rest of my stay the quality of the cleaning is variable.
-- I know it is mentioned somewhere that they try not disturb your stuff, but sometimes they did not clean thoroughly (not sure if they're too short on time).
-- I found that the end table was not wiped even once during my stay (it was steadily accumulating dust).
-- The bed was not made up everyday (I count maybe 3-4 times the bed was made in 2 weeks). I understand not changing the sheets but it should at least be tidied/made up everyday
-- The towel does get replaced most of the time, but I found on my second to last day, the bath mat was wet and they just hang it on the shower rails.
-- Emptying the bin was variable - some days it was emptied even when there's barely any trash, and some days it was not emptied when it's half full already.
-- They don't wash your plates/glass but this is to be expected.
-- They did change the bed sheets and the shower curtain at the end of my week 1, which was nice.
