At 3pm on a routine TH afternoon, your faithful Yelp Elite Correspondent's wifey called me, en route home after her teaching gig, and asked "Wanna go get an early dinner, my treat?"
In over 27yrs together I can count on one hand the number of times where my beautiful bride has paid for dinner- Which is exactly how it SHOULD be, by the way.
But sheeeeeeeeeiiit, I wasn't about to pass up a comped meal, even if it was Mexican. What can I say? My bride is an authentic Michoacana, through and through. The girl looooves the cuisine of her native country.
We chose Cabrera's, this time the Duarte location because we've frequented its sister site in Arcadia multiple times but wanted to assess Duarte. We passed the world renowned cancer treatment center City of Hope, stopped briefly to pay our respects¹ then pivoted onward to Cabrera's.
The salsa is outstanding, both the customary red salsa they bring everyone plus the green one that Leti asked for.
Leti ordered a skinny lime margaritas, which pleasant surprise is brought to the table in a distinctively larger glass than the ones she's ordered from the Arcadia location. $15 is a bit steep, however.
We both ordered one of the house specialties- The Fajitas. Leti chose shrimp & chicken, I opted for steak + chicken.
A+ grade for presentation!!! Cabrera's utilizes a wooden foundation, multi-compartment lifted tray to present their showcase entree- Call it their take on a Japanese style bento box!!
A+ grade for the food itself! Ample portions, very good taste, well balanced proportion of meats to grilled, slivered braids of onion, green & red peppers.
C grade for the caliber of service, tonight. Our server must've ended her shift or gone on lunch because we had a trio of servers helping us, but none of the characteristic "Hello, my name is Marcia and I'll be taking over for _____, who is going home" handoff that you often see at other restaurants.
Restrooms were clean and suitably stocked.
Our bill was $95, after tax and tip, for two entrees, one alcoholic beverage and one soft drink.
