"Nestled on the Blue Ridge Mountains of South Carolina, Caesars Head State Park is known for its spectacular views of the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area, and is named for a granitic gneiss rock formation located atop the escarpment. The origin of the name “Caesars Head” is disputed, though some have claimed the rock bears a resemblance to the famous Roman general. Trails throughout the park offer beautiful views of the mountainous landscape. The short path to the viewing area that overlooks the Caesars Head rock passes through another intriguingly named geological curiosity, a narrow passageway between two giant rocks, called “Devils Kitchen.” When the trail reaches Devils Kitchen, a set of stairs descends deep down into the rocky gap, which is just wide enough for a person to pass through. The formation was created thousands of years ago, as water on the mountain froze and expanded, causing the rock to crack open from the pressure. The granitic gneiss, a type of metamorphic rock, breaks at a 90-degree angle when it cracks, which formed the narrow passage flanked by tall rock walls. The name of the geological formation is another story. It comes from a myth dating back to the days when the area was settled by Scots-Irish immigrants who enjoyed brewing their own alcohol. According to the story, the Devil himself made a particularly hot brew here, and spilled a drop of it on the rock, splitting the rock open on the spot. Shortly after passing through the Devils Kitchen, the trail arrives at a small overlook offering a panoramic view of the eponymous Caesars Head rock formation." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Park rangers are very informative and helpful about trails and parking. The center also has a new nature exhibit that was really interesting. Lots of essentials available in the store! We spent 2 days in the area and hiked several different trails each day. It was beautiful and a little cooler than the Midlands. Every trail, short or long, is a bit strenuous. The Raven Cliff Falls overlook was our favorite. It is a little over 2 miles one way. We were there and back in an hour and forty-five minutes. There is a way to get to the suspension bridge in about 3.3 miles and then turn around return. Take the Raven Cliff Falls trail about 1 1/2 miles to the Gum Gap trail (an old logging road so not too awful) and then to the bridge.

I did the Dismal Loop. Please be aware if you want to do the whole 9 miles, I'd highly recommend hiking poles and packing a backpack with water, snacks, and medical (just in case)! Also be prepared to be out there for four or more hours. I went out there with a large group (20+) of Girls Who Hike SC (find us on Facebook). I ended up in a slower paced group that worked perfectly for me and my dog. Me and another girl, it was our first time hiking the loop. When you go, take the left side of the loop first, unless you want to end with a very (very) steep ascent. It means you start with a steep descent, which was proven difficult with me and my husky (he's young and still learning we don't pull on trails). It took us just over six hours to complete the nine miles. But we went at a nice slow and steady pace and enjoyed the views. It made for a perfect Sunday!

If you are looking for beautiful view of the mountains this place will not disappoint. We were on our motorcycle, it was a nice ride to ultimately, get off the bike and walk around a bit and see some beautiful scenery. There is also a gift shop.

It’s a hiker lovers paradise over here. Great #StatePark and a wonderful place to explore. Fishing 🎣 picnicking 🧺and trailside camping 🏕️. The views are amazing and the short trails I hiked 🥾were great, stunning views and a few small waterfalls. Look forward to returning in the fall to hike #RavenCliffFalls. If you’re a hiking enthusiast…#CaesaerHead should be on your bucket list, IMO. 😉 They also have a great overlook area. Very busy park and quite crowded on the day that I went. #SCStateParks #LeaveNoTrace #ProtectPreserveEnjoy #SupportStateParks #HappyPlaces❤️

This was my second time returning to this area, since I visited back in February of 2017. It was even more amazing than my initial experience, and considering I haven’t been anywhere at all in years, just to escape here is the ultimate feeling of being humbled by our beautiful surroundings. I planned an impromptu trip, to pretty much get away for a moment, and this was my second destination of the morning so far. A full sense of tranquility, serenity, peace, and beauty all rolled up into one huge smile from the heart! Thanks for your vision, Tommy Wyche 🙏🏾

I just like to come to the overlook and through Devils Kitchen. Everytime I've been it hasn't been too busy. A must stop to see the mountains below and beyond the overlook.
