Where to Eat on the Russian River - AFAR

"A low-key, artsy waterside café located where the Russian River flows into the Pacific; while the pour-over coffee and sandwiches are solid, the setting—Adirondack chairs on the lawn, serene water views, and occasional weekend live music—is the main draw for lingering with a snack and a drink." - Jennifer Maerz, Jessie Beck

Wowowow so happy to have stumbled into this gem. I don’t think it gets better than this- the coffee was AMAZING, food was SO fresh, and the scenery was brilliant. The team manning the shop were icing on the cake- Bianca was so easygoing and helpful with food allergy questions. You could honestly spend all day here, so relaxing and hospitable.

This place is special. I came early before it was crowded…very misty, little breezy. No line and my choice of chairs. Heaven! The coffee and avocado toast were delicious, (watch out for the little black birds…especially the big fat bully, they will try to steal your goodies) there were hummingbirds in the giant lupine, it made my whole morning. Come early for a little solitude and bring a jacket. I can’t wait to come back.

We've stopped here a couple of times now, really good food, and the view is also very nice. Most of the tables are outside, but they also have some covered ones in case the weather isn't nice. They mostly have sandwiches, a few salads, and a wide coffee selection. Great stop if you're in the area

Beautiful and very popular cafe with scenic outdoor seating overlooking the river bend. Great coffee and sandwiches

My boyfriend and I love stopping by here for breakfast whenever we stay at the Jenner Inn. The food is always local, fresh, and delicious. We usually order coffee and a sandwich, but we tried the crab melt once and it was amazing! Since it’s the only café in town, expect a bit of a wait — but it’s definitely worth it. One morning while we were eating breakfast, we even spotted otters by the water, which made the experience even more special.

Google
Nice spot for coffee. Order inside, get your coffee through window outside. Seating under roof out of the wind or more outside with better view on Russisn river and kayaking people. Would recommend trying this place.

We had a delicious breakfast here this morning. The poached eggs on toast were delightful! The Cafe Mocha was very delicious! Just the right amount of chocolate. It's a small cafe with outdoor seating, some covered seating, and great views.

Google
This is the perfect space to relax on an early weekend morning. A sunrise drive up Highway 1 drops you right into the center of Jenner. On the banks of the Russian River, Cafe Aquatica serves delicious local roasted coffee, sustainably sources dishes, and has a relaxing atmosphere that is easy to get lost into. The isolated aspect of the town really allows you to sit and enjoy the scenery, or maybe sit in one of their loungers while reading a great book. Highly recommend this place for anyone that is looking for some time off the road while traveling historic Highway 1!

Yelp
Drove here after a hike in Bodega Bay! You order at the counter inside and pick up your food from the window outside. The line was pretty long around noon on a Monday, but it moved quickly. Couple things to keep in mind: during our visit there was patchy cell service and no wifi (not sure if that's typical). Also the restrooms are the public ones next door at the visitor center. Ordered the avocado toast on focaccia bread which was tasty, though a little heavy on the seasoning for my liking. The real showstopper is the view. Most of the chairs have attached tables to set food on, making it easy to sit and enjoy the river and sunshine. A lovely spot to unwind!

Yelp
Setting is completely beautiful and tranquil -- right on the water with outdoor seating and live music. Oh, and the food, yeah that was good too! My wife ordered a parfait, which was full of fruit and granola. I had the eggs and salmon -- eggs were perfectly poached, salmon was hot smoked (which I usually prefer), toasted focaccia was light and appropriately crisp, and the seeds sprinkled on top were a surprisingly nice addition. Everything seemed very fresh. Good spot for a stopover on your way up to Sea Ranch, etc. or back to the city (or, of course, if you're staying in Jenner)!

Yelp
This was a wonderful place to stop and eat on our way to Gualala AMBIANCE: Pet friendly providing a water bowl. Lots of seating outdoors providing an amazing view and barstools inside, however, the parking is limited. SERVICE: You order at the counter inside and they have a pick-up window outside next to the water dispenser. FOOD: We all ordered the Crab Roll at $22.00 each. It was good but served on a small round bun with an Aioli sauce and sweet pickles on the side, BUT, as soon as we started to eat the wasps swarmed in on the meal and made it dangerous to take a bite, so a lot of people went back to their cars to finish their meal. So, BEECAREFUL! And that's the rest of this buzzin story!

Yelp
Cute cafe bordering the area where the Russian River meets the ocean. On the weekends. you can catch live music. There is outdoor patio seating as well as covered outdoor seating which comes in handy when it is really windy outside. Makes the perfect setting to relax on a sunny day! You order at the counter and then they call out when your order is up. Daughter got the lox bagel ($16) and I got the pesto portobello sandwich ($14). Really enjoyed my sandwich, the portobello mushrooms were marinated. Came with a side of house made pickles. The bagel however was pretty crunchy and daughter said she has had better. You can order bottles of local wine for $30. Would totally drop by again!

Yelp
Stopped by after a hike and happy we did. Parking is very limited so keep that in mind. We stopped by to grab a latte which was pretty good. We happened to be lucky enough to show up when they were having someone play live music. They have outdoor seating overlooking the Russian River going out into the ocean. They have a number of picnic tables where you can sit and enjoy your food/drink and listen to the music. We only ordered the drinks which were reasonably priced. Their food menu looked very delicious BUT the prices are a little high for what it is. With that said 100% recommend stopping by at least for some live music.

Megan B.

Yelp
Delightful place to stop for lunch. Iced vanilla latte was perfect! I want another one!! Smoked Salmon salad was terrific. Live music, beautiful view and friendly staff. Just have to be lucky to get a parking spot!
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
Just on the water is this little cafe with tea/coffee, beer/wine, cooked food, and some amazing outdoor seating. The service is queuing in a line and then finding a seat. If it's a lovely day, you get some relaxing bay views and breeze. If you're lucky, even some live music. It's a lovely place to stop for a break and a snack if you're passing through...though parking is rather limited and your bathroom options is a public outhouse (not for the faint of heart).
google avatar

Thomas B.

Yelp
I found this a few years ago by accident and it is now one of our favorite getaway places when the weather is hot in London. And sometimes the breeze can be pretty cool from the ocean, but it's always bearable with that view. So we bring layers so we're prepared whether it's hot or cold. The outdoor area is our favorite and the place is totally pet friendly. They also have a wine bar connected to the building next-door, which has a separate entrance. I recommend this for family, pets, pet owners for views and vistas and nice people working there. The quality of the food has always been fresh, attractive and quickly made.
google avatar

Yelp
If you driving along Highway 1 through Jenner you have to stop here! They have an incredible patio seating area overlooking the water and the ocean! The food is delicious as well as their coffees. Wish there was a bit more beer selection other than cans, but it doesn't matter. The view and the vibes more than make up for this. The staff are always cheerful and super friendly!

Yelp
Everything about this place spells L-O-V-E -consistently! It always starts with the smile from the staff taking our orders from the counter, every single dish and specials they had I've tried were all so goood, the drinks, the breath-taking views, phew!! What's not to love in this place??! I'd drive 2 hrs to get here and guaranteed to be reminded that heaven can be on earth.
google avatar

Justin C.

Yelp
Everything looked delicious, the matcha latte was amazing (i don't usually enjoy hot drinks), and it was tasty despite my not stirring it properly great river to ocean views, good vibes, live music, only complaint is that parking was tight with not the most space and it seeming very popular during the weekends! The service was also spot on, very accommodating. I'll be back!
google avatar

Rona S.

Yelp
I saw this on my way home from Timber Cove and decided to stop by. The cafe was so busy with a line snaking around the place. It gave me enough time to figure out what I wanted. I ended up getting a late with jasmine syrup and a chocolate chip cookie. I wasn't hungry just wanted to see why the place was so busy. I went outside and went around and found a live performance and a crowd of people chilling and watching while sipping coffee and having lunch. The background was picturesque with the ocean views. I finally got my drink and I sat down to watch for a bit and left when my coffee was gone. This was a very cool find, a nice little stop from the long drive. Highly recommend you check this place out!
google avatar

Ann C.

Yelp
The view from Aquatica's outdoor deck is always amazing!! Even better when it's warm and there's live music being performed. A must stop if you're passing through the area. Food and drink are also solid, but really you come for the view.

Rim C.

Yelp
Food was good, not great, had a dungeness crab roll, roll was plain, nothing special and crab was a little on the light side. Staff was friendly and professional. Location - awesome, get views of the Jenner area. Too many yellow jackets!!! We will return and hope these items are improved upon.

Yelp
Jenner's cafe overlooking the beautiful Russian River near the junction of the river and the Pacific Ocean! We stopped in mid-afternoon on a Sunday, after hiking at Jenner Headlands Preserve, and parking can be tough to find on the weekends. We lucked out and got a spot right out front but saw many people parking along the road. They were busy! Do not be deterred by a line - it moves quickly. They offer fair trade coffee and espresso, which is roasted locally in Freestone, a casual coastal menu (think sandwiches and salads), and scratch-made pastries....as well as some beers, wines, canned teas/drinks, salty snacks, and fun merch. We got two sandwiches, which both came on house-made focaccia): Eggs + Toast $16 Toasted focaccia bread with two poached eggs, aioli, arugula and everything seeds *I recommend adding avocado to zhuzh this up Rainbow Sandwich $14 Toasted focaccia, cabbage, avocado, greens, beet spread, shredded carrots, beets and aioli served with a side of pickles *Loved the cornucopia of fresh, colorful, veggies, but didn't eat all of the focaccia. Two focaccia sandwiches felt like a lot of bread to us. Next time we'll try the Cafe Salad, which seems like the salad version of the Rainbow Sandwich, and we'll try their coffee. The seating is outside, overlooking the river, and friendly dogs on leash are welcomed. Our pups had a bit too much energy for a crowded patio so we sat elsewhere. Live Music is offered every weekend and from what we could hear, it was a great vibe. Very much a community atmosphere. Cool spot.

Yelp
I saw this as a top result via yelp and decided to give it a try. They have a small parking lot with another larger one right next door to the visitor center. They don't have any restrooms there only a sink for washing your hand and the closest would be next to the visitor center which is more of a park restroom with no sinks. It's a cute little spot but on the weekends there is live music and it gets very packed. They have different performers that swing by so check the website for more details. I want to say from 1-3pm is when they perform but again, just double check the site for more details. They have some barstool seating inside and it was empty. The line was pretty long when I went to order but it moved fast. I tried a few things off their menu - smoked salmon sandwich, crab roll, and a clam chowder. Honestly the food was expensive and not good. The three things plus 2 lattes were $65. The smoked salmon sandwich was wayyy to salty and they were super stingy with the arugula and it didn't seem very fresh either. Their smoked salmon also wasn't what I expected it to be, it wasn't the think sliced moist kind, it's like they just smoked it themselves leaving it more dry and maybe 10 minutes away from being a jerky. The crab roll was good, but again skimped on the arugala too. Clam chowder they asked if I wanted croutons, I said yes, and there was none on top, just a bunch of oil which made it seem so unhealthy. No taste, and super watery, probably one of the worst ones I've tried. All in all - if you were going to go and get a coffee and enjoy the vibes it's a good spot, food wise, I wouldn't expect it to be top notch.

Yelp
Great and friendly customer service. Little sandwich shop with an outdoor eating space. Very cute! Views of the river/beach. The salad was super fresh and tasty, we also had the crab sandwich and that was super delicious! They have ciders and wines!
google avatar

Lisa W.

Yelp
Another glorious day at Cafe Aquatica! We had the salmon roll & crab roll sandwiches- scrumptious. My matcha latte was perfect. Disappointed they were out of their incredible salted chocolate chip miso cookies but the macaroon was delicious. The service is quick. And the views cannot be beat.
google avatar

Norm D.

Yelp
What a charming little coffee shop in little hamlet of Jenner California. Morning latte and some avocado toast enjoying the morning fog in front of the Russian River as it heads into the Pacific Ocean! 5-stars hands down!
google avatar

Elisa G.

Yelp
No Wi-Fi at a coffee shop? Ridiculous! I do like my latte and the view of the Russian River is gorgeous! I really liked my cinnamon latte and popcorn
google avatar

Diana M.

Yelp
It looks like a funny hippie hang out from the outside. It doesn't really look a lot better on the inside, but the latte I had had to be one of the best I have had in a long time. My husband had a blueberry scone and he loved it and the next day we went back and had a savory scone and it was delicious too, wish we had one of these right here in Vacaville as I would be there every day
google avatar

Tara C.

Yelp
The food, view, coffee and vibe in general were all perfect. Very popular spot, yet we were able to nab seats behind the wind protector window mid afternoon on Mother's Day! Live music was a lovely touch too.
google avatar

Makayla S.

Yelp
The location and scenery can't be beat. The service was a little on the slower side so it's best to go when you're not in a rush. I ordered the clam chowder and it was pretty good. Unfortunately I just kept having bad luck with weird interactions with the other guests. First our table got over ran by a family and all their kids. While we're trying to enjoy the views the kids are loud and chewing with their mouths open and so we move to a different spot. Right as I get my food this lady thinks it's the perfect time to open up her dogs wet food container and have him eat right in front of me. The smell of the dog food was nauseating. I did kindly ask that she not feed her dog in front of me and she put the food away, but thought it was such a weird thing to do at a restaurant. Probably won't be back to this place or if I do I'll just take my food to go lol.
google avatar

Ellie S.

Yelp
This is a must see stop when traveling up the northern California coast. It has a good amount of seating around the side and back of the building, so you have a great view of the river meeting the ocean. The food was delicious and fairly priced. It has a very laid-back vibe and is dog friendly!
google avatar

Isaac A.

Yelp
Ordered the rainbow veggie sandwich but swapped for the vegan pesto aioli to make it vegan. It was delicious, a decent portion size and paired with a really great view of the water! They also had live music which was a really nice touch.
google avatar

Lilyann N.

Yelp
My most favorite coffee shop of all time. It is the coziest, most quaint, charming place. You truly can't find another place on the coast with coffee as delicious and food as fresh. They often have live music on the weekends which is when it gets a little busy, but I swear the service the baristas provide is always with a smile. They seem like the sweetest bunch who really enjoy working here and I can see why. Such a lovely place that provides so much peace and quiet for me.
google avatar

Alice L.

Yelp
Amazing view, so-so food. The view from the back patio is just gorgeous, and I imagine that eating there would actually make the food taste better. Unfortunately, we didn't have the pleasure of staying. The smoked salmon roll didn't have enough salmon, nor was there sauce of any kind except for a bit of mayo. This made the sandwich too bready and dry. The rainbow sandwich was stuffed with veggies but not particularly flavorful. The best was probably the day-old half-price turmeric cookie, which we reheated at home and greatly enjoyed. Next time I'm in the area I would return to try the coffee and enjoy the patio. Closing out on a positive note: the service is lovely.
google avatar

Daniel C.

Yelp
Beautiful scenery, best crab sandwich I've had to date, friendly helpful staff 10 out of 10 keep it up guys I wouldn't change a thing! Decent beer selection as well would definitely recommend!
google avatar

Ezra B.

Yelp
I thought it was pretty dope how you can order through the machine and it was faster than I thought! There was a huge line when I got there but it went by quickly. The food was soooo delicious!! Oysters were fat like the ones in Nola! A lot of tables outside and I love how you can be by the water. Customer service was great and I would definitely come back again!
google avatar

Siddhartha G.

Yelp
Aquatica seems to have gotten comfortable with being the only place around to grab a bite at. The staff was grumpy and disinterested, maybe because they're hurried and it's busy, but I've been to plenty busier restaurants in the bay doing it while having a better time. Our portabello mushroom burger was lukewarm, felt like a salad stuffed between bread, quite unappetizing. The lox bagel was not toasted well with soggy bread, the salmon didn't feel fresh and it was overly salted. Perhaps we should've tried the new food truck that's opened up across the street giving them some competition. The view of the ocean with the beautiful blue and the colorful kayaks was mesmerizing though, accompanied by two very talented men performing viola-guitar duets.
google avatar

Teresa B.

Yelp
My friends and I had breakfast here today after staying a lovely AirBnb just up the road. My friends each got a Dungeness crab roll, which they said was very good. They said the pickles were especially tasty. I wasn't feeling great this morning, so I just got a side of toast and a lemon-ginger tea with honey. That's ok though because the views from the back patio of this place were worth it! You get unobstructed views of the Russian River right before it reaches the Pacific Ocean. If you're visiting Jenner or are just passing through, Cafe Aquatica is a great stop.

Erin R.

Yelp
The food was delicious, filling and quick. The eggs and toast with arugula and a dreamy mustard aioli was amazing as was the portobello focaccia sandwich. Great flavors, solid portions, speedy service with a beautiful view where the Russian River meets the Pacific.

Carin O.

Yelp
Great food and kind service. Lovely view and ambience. Very popular so give yourself time or go on an off time of day. Worth it
google avatar

Galya T.

Yelp
Cool ambience right on the water. Great food, wow! My stocked salmon salad was delicious and filled with many local ingredients. It was fresh and enough to keep me satisfied for a 8 mile hike afterwards. The coffee drinks were delicious too! The outside so beautiful and peaceful. Live music was lovely. Just in general being on the water with music and people was amazing.

Ron T.

Yelp
Great place must go. Views are amazing. Kayaking and seals. Food was amazing. Good choices. Simple help yourself enjoy the outdoor dining.

Kyra K.

Yelp
I'm a certified aquaphile and Cafe Aquatica hit all of my marks! My Pop took me here and it was an unforgettable surprise. This cozy coastal cafe serves a simple but healthy and hearty menu boasting beautiful views overlooking the Russian River--the definition of a hidden gem. You will not regret stopping off at this unassuming cafe in Jenner. Inside has their menu posted which includes organic gluten-free light bites such as soups, salads, sandwiches, and specialties. They also serve typical coffee and teas with dairy alternatives. The decorations have a rustic, hip, beachy vibe to them with a bar table inside to sit at. But oh my gosh now the real money is their outdoor seating. Plenty of tables and chairs on the waterfront where you're able to sit and take in the unobstructed scenic wildlife and beautiful weather--we spotted a harbor seal on our visit! It's a buzzer service so after ordering and paying inside you pick up your food from the window outside when buzzed. Service was helpful and straight to the point and our food came out fast. I did gawk over the menu but ultimately decided on their Smoked Salmon Roll. The roll was nicely sized for the price. Soft bun, hot smoked salmon, a lightly sauced savory aioli, and arugula and pickles on the side. The pickles weren't my fave but I did put the arugula on my sandwich. My Pop got their Crab Roll and wow both items were so dang delicious and I couldn't recommend them enough. As someone who loves good food and picturesque views, Cafe Aquatica will not disappoint you! It is so worth visiting when driving Highway 1 through Jenner. They have a small parking lot out front but no bathrooms. Trust me, the views on the water and food make it so worth it.

Yelp
we stopped at this place in Jenner,Ca for lunch in our drive down the coast.i got their crab roll and my boyfriend their smoked salmon sandwich. Both sandwich were good, price reasonable but the view where you eat your food is amazing !

Justin M.

Yelp
The view is absolutely amazing! If for nothing else, stop here for a bite to eat and a great cup of coffee and enjoy the beautiful Russian river and the ocean beyond. My family and I stopped here on our visit to Jenner and while they did not have my preferred coffee of choice (cold brew), the barista was able to serve me a pour over on ice and an iced latte for my wife. Both coffees had great, bold flavor. However I will say I strongly prefer the less acidic cold brew so I was disappointed they didn't offer it. I also really appreciated the barista chatting and joking with my 8 year old. It helped him have an enjoyable experience too! We did also stop by for lunch and I loved that the food was all organic and high quality, but I wasn't a big fan of the limited options available. The crab roll was decent, but the poached egg and toast and the pesto portobello sandwich were both delicious and I would go back for them. My only con or opportunity for improvement would be extended morning hours. As a father of two early risers, 8:30 is pretty late in our morning and we most days had already started our vacation adventures. I would love to have been able to stop by at seven or 730 for a coffee on the way out.
google avatar

Heidi B.

Yelp
Love this spot! Delicious pastries & drinks. Plenty of parking. Make sure to always dress in layers if you're visiting and consider taking an ocean stroll after your refreshments.
google avatar

Krista B.

Yelp
Just the perfect view and vibe for Jenner! I highly recommend this little spot when going through Jenner, you won't regret it! Aesthetic - 10/10 Talk about waterfront property! Plenty of unobstructed waterfront views overlooking Russian River's exit to the Pacific Ocean. Crunchy granola on the inside, beautifully moody and vibey on the outside. Staff - 10/10 So sweet and helpful! Gave me plenty of recommendations for a beverage and food. My order: Chai Latte - Not too sweet, perfectly creamy, definitely would order again. Rainbow Sandwich - DANG THIS IS GOOD! I would go back just for this sandwich, with or without views! Definitely would recommend, it's so fresh and full of flavor. TLDR; check this sweet little spot out!

Hope K.

Yelp
While driving from Bodega Bay to Sea Ranch, there were lots of cafe/shop options but I'm so glad I stopped here. I had such a magical time eating while watching the kayakers on the Russian river and listening to live music. Everything tasted fresh and homemade. The pickles especially were like pickles I've never tasted before! I will definitely be back!

Yelp
This is one of those places that even some locals seem to overlook. I'm always surprised when I tell people about this place, and they stare back blankly... It doesn't look like much from the road, and if you aren't paying attention - you may just miss it. But this would be a terrible mistake. This is pure Sonoma County Gold! Aside from delicious coffee, made from beans that they roast on-site, they offer a range of other great items- such as golden tonic (a chai like drink), and other tasty beverages, but that also have a great little kitchen. There are always delicious fresh pastries - and the macaroons are a real treat. The kitchen also makes exceptional food. Among my favorites are the fresh crab rolls (fresh crab, homemade pickles, and the softest bread!) and the clam chowder with croutons - which is delicate and light broth that always satisfies without making me feel like I just ate a dish of butter ;). If you are ever passing through Jenner, and looking for a quick break and a delicious snack and a cup of coffee or tea - this is THE PLACE! The people who work there are always super friendly and welcoming too. It's a local gem- stop by and see for yourself!
google avatar

Haley L.

Yelp
Such a great spot! Had the best smoked salmon salad. Incredible views, good vibes. Had the clam chowder as well with croutons which was yummy as well! Long line but worth it
google avatar

Val S.

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches for breakfast and lunch, friendly staff. Very cute little place with a beautiful outdoor area by the river. LGBTQ+ friendly

A B.

Yelp
Coffee was great, views are incredible, service was friendly, mushroom scone was awesome. Merch was cool too. No complaints.
google avatar

Catrina W.

Yelp
fabulously, laid-back quintessential California coast eatery. Lines run out the door! Excellent array of breakfastand lunch options, including alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, coffees, cappuccinos, teas, almost entirely organic, too. The crab sandwich is particularly excellent, and worthy of its reasonable price. After 12 PM, you can expect live outdoor music... Unbeatable if you feel like getting away from it all. Small nearby businesses include kayak and canoe rentals, plus a reasonably priced little market with a vast array of beverages and bags of saltwater taffy just below the front counter. Parking can be tricky. Come prepared with a bit of patience and keep a lookout for people leaving the adjacent parking lot beyond the post office where the bathrooms are.
google avatar

Yelp
The food was fast served hot served my clam chowder soup delicious with a rainbow sandwich just perfect

Yelp
The views are beautiful from this café. Don't pass it up without stopping by.. The coffee is delicious too

Yelp
After a heartbreaking meal in Bodega Bay, we set out the next morning to Jenner. We knew we could find redemption at Cafe Aquatica. Having been there before we knew that we would have a great breakfast experience. The weather was perfect for enjoying the morning overlooking the Russian River. We enjoyed a lox bagel and avocado toast, both very reasonably priced. Be prepared for a wait, as it does get busy. Enjoy the view and slow down. Cafe Aquatica provided the redemption we needed.
