Cafe Avissinia

Upon stepping into Cafe Avissinia we were warmly welcomed and enjoyed the cozy, and romantic atmosphere. The service and food were exceptional, the pricing is so affordable. We enjoyed it so much we went there twice while on our recent three day trip to Athens. They do have rooftop seating with an incredible view of Plaka and the Acropolis. If you want to guarantee a rooftop seat you should call and make reservations. The staff speak excellent English so communication is easy. We enjoyed sitting in the restaurant listening to the live music. It’s a restaurant with great food and atmosphere. I’d highly recommend the experience for yourself.

We visited this establishment for lunch on a weekday during our first trip to Athens. The food was absolutely delicious and the presentation was beautiful. The staff was courteous. The owner, Nikolas was very friendly and took the time to chat with us and make recommendations. It was obvious to us that the owner, the chef, and the servers all take great pride in the food created there.

This place is simply extraordinary. At first glance, it might look like a tourist trap — but don’t be fooled. This restaurant has been around for decades, long before the area became popular. It carries the soul of old Athens, and the food is nothing short of spectacular. You’ll find dishes here that are rare and deeply memorable — like sardines stuffed with herbs and wrapped in vine leaves, or exquisitely prepared fresh fish. I’ve heard the lamb is outstanding too, though I don’t eat meat myself. Even the salads are extraordinary! The ambiance is warm and authentic, with beautiful artwork scattered throughout the space. And if you sit on the terrace, you’ll have a stunning view of the Acropolis glowing in the evening light. A magical dining experience — elegant, rooted, and full of surprises.

A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Athens This charming spot, nestled within an antique market in the very heart of Athens, is a true delight. The place is spotless, inviting, and exudes a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The staff are always smiling, and the family’s original recipes are simply amazing. From the moment I arrived, I felt genuinely welcomed by the owner and the entire team. The food was outstanding—authentic flavors that truly capture the essence of Greek cuisine.

We had an Amazing experience at Café Avissinia! Service was perfect. The waiter was really nice and understanding. They did everything they could to make us feel comfortable. Don’t hesitate to write them to book a table or if you need to know anything. They answer by email very quickly and they were very nice. 😊 The food was great and local! Dessert was also really good. We highly recommend this restaurant! It also had AC which was really appreciated! Thanks again for a great lunch!

We had the Moussaka and Kleftiko, with Retsina wine and house Rose. The Moussaka was the best I’ve had in Greece so far, the Kleftika was fabulous, the view was just magnificent! Our waiter went with our flow. We just had a fabulous evening. You have to book, but what makes this restaurant so special is…it has the beautiful view, really good food, food service and you do not have to pay a booking fee or a fee to sit on the roof terrace! Go for the view…but also for the food, atmosphere and service!!

Booked table at rooftop but it was too warm. A table on the ground floor suffices with the fantastic sumptuous Greek food and juices. Enjoyed ourselves soaking in the homely ambience.

Ok! Where do I begin?! This, hands down, has been one of the best experiences I have had in Athens in the past 2 years! It is a combination of service, smiles, quality of food, location! I travelled in time and remembered all the reasons I am proud to be Greek! Thank you to the staff, thank you to the owners who have created this team and space! I cannot wait to return for more!! ♥️
