12 Bars and Restaurants With Music on the Menu

"Each night, a small Antwerp bar along the Scheldt River comes alive with the energy of locals dancing beneath a spinning disco ball. They’re not grooving to a live band, jukebox, or playlist. At Cafe Beveren, they’re moving to the music played by one of the city’s last functioning Decap dance organs. In the early 20th century, Belgian dance halls buzzed to the beat of mechanical, multi-instrument “organs.” These self-playing mini orchestras became so popular that design firms found themselves building more compact versions to fit inside smaller venues such as cafes and bars. One such firm was Gebroeders Decap Antwerpen (Dutch for “Decap Brothers Antwerp”). It’s Decap’s 1937 dance organ, complete with an accordion, drum set, and saxophone, that sits in Cafe Beveren today. While these devices have largely disappeared, replaced by jukeboxes and music-streaming services, Cafe Beveren’s organ still attracts both nostalgic older generations and younger customers who come for the cheap beer, dancing, and quirky, no-frills vibe. And, like the drinks, playing a song is very affordable: Anyone who wants to hear a tune can simply drop a one-Euro coin into the organ’s control box, then watch the instruments come alive." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Great place to.immerse yourself in the flemish culture. Definitely worth a visit

A popular locals bar down by the River Schedt. 1 euro coin slot gets to start the mechanical oompah band music for a short duration. Dated hardware, bar area is quite small, and the barmaid wasn't the most cheerful that particular evening.

Great to see a Decap Organ in a cafe, but the bar staff were not friendly, in fact most unwelcoming. Considering the organ is the unusual feature of the cafe, on the night we visited they didn’t want us to play it, and made it very clear. However the local customers were nice, and made the atmosphere ok

Very fun find. Went to hear see the organ. Had a drink. Very good prices on the drinks. Best we have seen on the whole trip for beer. Vibe in the diner was festive and fun. Really glad we stopped in here. We did not eat so can't speak to the food.

One of the oldest continuously operating TRUE Flemish bars in Antwerpen. I always stop by when I'm in town.

Café Beveren is a pub you have to drop by when in Antwerp. They play oldies music there and it's very busy during the weekends, the Dutch love this pub too. It has a lovely warm welcome feeling, no fancy decor but very friendly staff.

Google
Good Belgian beer and something else. Their colorful and rare Decap organ—a mechanical jukebox from Art Deco times that blasts classic schlager tunes—and an equally colorful bunch of locals guarantee a memorable evening on the town.

Yelp
There used to be a time when every 'volks café' in Antwerpen had his organ. Times change and an organ had to make place for the jukebox and later on a crappy dj set with an even more shitty DJ. Café Beveren is different they kept their organ and for 50 cent, a little orchestra will play your favorite classics and even some crappy hits like the Ketchup song. The place is cool but all those Dutch tourists are so irritating. Another shitty review by the shitty guide of Antwerpen.

Yelp
