"This tiny cafe in Montevideo has played a bigger role in Uruguay’s history than its tiny size might indicate. Cafe Brasilero is the oldest cafe in the capital city, and has long been the center of its bohemian culture, attracting artists, writers, and musicians over its 140-year history. Tango master and singer Carlos Gardel frequented the cafe, and author Juan Carlos Onetti etched part his first novel right into the cafe’s tables. Perhaps the most notable and longest patron was writer Eduardo Galeano, who visited the place every Wednesday for over 20 years. A large photo of him hangs at the cafe’s entrance. Built in 1877, the Brazilian-themed cafe still retains much of its architectural history. The building has preserved its chairs, brass chandeliers and window frames outlining its Art Nouveau-style facade from that earlier era. The walls are also covered with photos, newspaper clippings, and paintings from the cafe’s past. It’s a past that was almost lost. The cafe closed in the 1980s, and remained closed for decades until it reopened in 2010 with an eye on preserving its story. It later became the first cafe to be declared of cultural interest by the city of Montevideo." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Nice place in the old city of Montevideo. The interior spreads the charm of the old and the food is good. Being a very touristy café, the prices are a bit elevated but ok. I enjoyed it. The cheesecake was gorgeous!

It is one of the oldest cafes in the city. It has nice vibes. We had cappuccino, hot chocolate, and some sweets 😋

A staple and must go. Coffee is hot and fresh. Baristas and servers and kind and cheeky. The ricotta cheesecake is fantastic and a totally unique flavour. Great atmosphere and very cozy.

A bit underwhelmed by the place. Portions were small and expensive service was slow although they were very busy. Seems to band on the fact that it’s very old.

The place is neat, the staff is lovely and the food is pretty good. The only part that is disappointing is the coffee, which is not premium by any stretch of the imagination. I would love to see them get a more “artisanal” coffee. But it’s hard to argue with a classic and this is one of Montevideo’s classics.

We can’t say anything about the food as we only dropped by for a coffee and to enjoy the ambiance which was as expected very enjoyable. The coffee was good and strong. The service was friendly. Some clients were eating and they appeared to be enjoying their meals. Yes we would return and would recommend.
