On the Isle of Skye, These Women Chefs Are Helping Reshape the Region's Cuisine | Condé Nast Traveler

"After emerging from the trees and spotting its telltale red roof, I arrive at Café Cùil, where Clare Coghill—an award-winning chef who launched the restaurant from an East London kitchen six years ago—greets me with a hug and shows me a light, airy interior with floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the wild landscape of Carbost and the Cuillin mountains. She uses the restaurant’s remote location to champion Hebridean produce and Gaelic culture, building seasonal menus around what’s found nearby: foraged nettle, meadowsweet, and gorse in spring and summer, and autumnal dishes that feature black pudding from Harlosh and beef brisket from Lochalsh. The food is playful and rooted in place — I’m still dreaming of the Highland-spiced lamb with flatbread, labneh, heritage tomatoes, and fresh mint; the Isle of Skye crab atop scrambled eggs with Cùil homemade kimchi and crispy chili oil; and a curried cauliflower with beetroot hummus, summer greens, and nettle salsa — all washed down with the signature Cùil‑Aid, a spritz of highland strawberries and foraged meadowsweet. Beyond the dishes, Coghill emphasizes a welcoming, healthy workplace and a deep connection to local producers, and she plans to publish a Café Cùil cookbook focused on Skye recipes." - Carinne Geil Botta

Such a hidden gem! Despite being in a remote spot on the Isle of Skye, this café is full of charm. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, the food was absolutely delicious, and the drinks were great too!

Wonderful cafe/restaurant. Excellent food with a modern twist. Fantastic flavours and presentation. Coffee and cake afterwards is a must…if you have no room for cake, take it away and have cake later. Friendly staff too who will spend a few minutes chatting even though they are very busy. A must visit on your Skye tour.

Had a great birthday lunch at café cùil complete with takeaway cake. Food was delicious and staff were attentive and helpful when our first choice wasn't available. That said it looks like anything on the menu is good. Well worth a stop although you may have to queue during busier times. Will definitely return 🙂

A nice place very near the Fairy pools. Had to wait a bit for a table but that was fine, must get very busy on peak months. Service was friendly and prompt. I had coffee and a black pudding dish/stew. Food was very tasty, portion could have been a bit larger. Coffee was ok. Fine with me bringing my dog in.

Excellent food , had the lamb flatbread, and chicken sandwich, and soup of day . Excellent macchiato. Can get busy after the fairy pools hiking. Maybe a 10 minute wait.

What an amazing place! A slight detour off the road to the Fairy Pools, Talkisker and Neist and absolutely packed when we dropped in. But the staff went out of their way to get people a seat, and the service was super fast. This is a lovely, warm modern building with plenty of parking and great views, and they serve a really good coffee and a decent range of cakes.

Very nice purpose built cafe. Excellent stop on car trip around Skye. Felt like a piece of trendy London in the middle of nowhere. I liked the back story how they ended up there. Excellent menu and range of cakes.

Simply brilliant! Probably the best food I have ever had in a café / lunch style environment. The level of taste and presentation was outstanding. A sweetcorn chowder that we had was thick, nourishing and full of flavour, then the Isle of Skye crab with scrambled egg, kimchi and chilli oil was spectacular and full of depth and a range of flavours. Service was efficient and friendly, without being overbearing. The building is colourful and striking from the outside, and modern with lovely decor inside. If you like good quality food with loads of flavour then get yourself to Cafe Cuil without delay, it's exceptional.
