18 Best Bars in Amsterdam | Condé Nast Traveler

"This is your peek into the quirky traditional culture of Amsterdam, a cavernous, classic brown café that’s charmingly brimming with bric-a-brac: old clocks, birdcages, chandeliers, even a doctor's bag once owned by the founder (a surgeon). It was made for, and is still largely populated by, a dedicated crowd of locals—which is exactly why you’ll love it. Beer’s the jam here, as in most brown cafés; but there’s a respectable selection of whiskeys if that’s more to your taste." - Meredith Bethune

The service was incredible. The wonderful woman running the place even took our picture behind the bar since it was slow. I highly recommend.

Google
The coolest space that I've seen in a while. This pub/bar is the definition of cozy and is well decorated with so many small trinkets on shelves and walls. The drinks are good, the menu is well designed and the owners/bartenders are very friendly.

Very nice place with very good service. Place to go for a casual drink. You feel like a Harry Potterish ambiance there. Basic food plates (cheese or smoked sausage) that goes well either the drinks… I really liked it and it was not crowded by tourists. Mainly local crowd.

It is rare that a bar or restaurant lives up to so many good reviews but Café De Dokter really does. The owners are very welcoming and make you feel at home straight away. It is a small space but I see it as a positive, as like we did you will end up speaking to the people around you which adds to the atmosphere. There is a great selection of beers with a few specials on. We had a Lambic, a triple bock and Abbey beer which were all great and in the proper glasses. There are bar snacks and although we didn't order any the cheese/meat board with extras looked great. Overall a great experience and easy to stay a few hours. A must visit when in Amsterdam.

I went here tonight, and I loved it so much. Both the place and the man behind the bar just radiate so much charm, warmth, and kindness. Thank you!

Google
Café De Dokter in Amsterdam was honestly one of the worst I've had. The place was shockingly dirty — there were dust clumps everywhere, even in plain sight, which makes you wonder how long it's been since the place was cleaned properly. Ffs, move your fat asses and clean the place instead of swallowing chunks of meat and cheese along with shots of appetizers (as if they need). Disgusting place. To make matters worse, the staff was incredibly rude. From the moment we walked in, we were told — more than once — that we had to order something, as if we had come in just to sit and stare at the dust. It wasn’t said politely either; the tone was pushy and unwelcoming. I understand that it's a small and historic place, but basic cleanliness and respect for customers shouldn't be optional. Definitely not a place I’d return to or recommend.

Yelp
What a gem of a place. Dusty in the right way, welcoming, oozing history and delicious GTs. A+++

Yelp
If you dig a cozy, historic, "conversation bar," this is a place for you. I liken it to Vesuvio Café in San Francisco and McSorley's in NYC. Friendly, sane, and gently dusted by time.

Yelp
Great gin and tonics the decorations seem like they haven't changed since the bar was originally opened in the 1700s.

Yelp
While this was on my guide book inspired list of stops in Amsterdam, I chanced upon it completely by accident. That's the pleasure of a small city: you can be walking along and go, "Hey! That's where I wanted go later!" Since I was freezing my ass at the time, I was literally going to duck into the next shop, no matter what it was. Happily, it was this one! (True story, this last December was really cold, even by Dutch standards. I literally found myself wondering what they would charge me in the Red Light District just to warm up for a second!) This is a 'brown café,' a café with walls so stained by years of tobacco smoke that they are now brown. It has been in the same family for something like six generations as a pub. Its previous life had been that of a doctor's office, hence its title. This place couldn't possibly have more character. The dust has dust on it, but in the best way possible. When you're there, you think, "I must soak every amazing second up, and remember how wonderful it is." Classic jazz albums fill the air. The incredibly personable proprietor chats with his friends and you, if you like. The only food served here is cheese, so don't come here hungry, but do come. You won't regret it.

Yelp
My friend recently moved to Amsterdam and discovered this small cozy bar which quickly became a favorite. What the Dutch would call a traditional brown bar, this establishment has been in business for over 6 generations and holds years of memories. The decor has not been changed in years, if ever, which adds charm. The owner is extremely friendly and welcoming and talks to all the customers. The bar is tiny and holds about 20 people but everyone is so welcoming you leave feeling like the bar is your good friend. The owner serves Gouda, sausage and pickled vegetables which he slices right on a counter behind the bar. The only thing that I don't love is the amount of dust hanging from the lights and pictures. At first we thought the dust was fake but then realized it was years and years of dust that accumulated. To most the dust is part of the charm and decor but for me I could do without. Despite the dust I would still come back and highly recommend!

Yelp
I like this place! It is cute and they have good beers. Nice music, chill vibes. Try the draft brand beer, it is really good.

Yelp
Absolutely the best bar in the city centre. It is hidden away behind some vines, off one of the most popular shopping streets, yet it doesn't get too crowded. The owners family has had the place for several generations and he has been running for a couple of decades now. He is incredibly friendly and helpful with drinks and an absolute delight to talk to. The atmosphere is also great.

Yelp
Petite bar in a very busy tourist area. The bartender was extremely friendly and seemed to have some regulars. Do checkout the bathroom while there... it's an adventure to get up to it.

Yelp
Dry sea bass not fresh Cute place but food ordinary They messed up our Order and I had to wait for my dish while everyone else ate Found bones in fish (only mine) sent back and they still charged me Don't bother

Yelp
The ambiance here is great. The alley it's in is full of beautiful vines and flowers. The bar plays jazz and the interior is beautiful (though small). The owner served us. He's very kind and helpful (he recommended a great whiskey, which was one of a huge list.)

Yelp
A must visit historic cafe in Amsterdam. It is the smallest, I believe! Met the owner, it has been in his family for generations! Loved it!
