In Amsterdam, the krulletter is getting a new lease of life - SilverKris

"Perched on a sun‑trap corner beside the stately Prince’s Canal, this archetypal Amsterdam brown café epitomizes the Jordaan’s working‑class history and the Dutch virtue of gezelligheid: think wood‑panelled walls, ramshackle furniture, stained oil paintings, a jolly red‑and‑green striped canopy and candlelit tables where neighbours gossip and old‑time Amsterdammers tell stories. Less obvious to many visitors is that its glass is graced by the Amsterdamse krulletter, the curlicued script developed in the 1940s by Wim Visser; when the current proprietor took over in the 1980s he replaced a Gothic 1930s sign by commissioning veteran sign‑painter Leo Beukeboom, who drafted with a pounce wheel and painted the window freehand in a single afternoon—a hand‑crafted feature customers have admired ever since." - Mark Smith

Best cafes to spot exquisite Amsterdam typography - SilverKris

"After a break-in some years ago, the proprietor, Mark Bollen, salvaged the section of glass bearing the krulletters and had it painstakingly reproduced, demonstrating a commitment to preserving the café’s historic signage and visual identity." - Mark Smith

Our friends fly in from the U.S. and we come from Italy and this is the place we meet once a year. Every time we meet great visitors from around the world while having a few beers. We just drink here so I can't comment on the food because I just don't know.. from what I have seen from others it looks to be standard pub food? Staff is great.. Location is fantastic! I will recommend this every time you want to sit and watch the world go by with a cold beer in hand and enjoying friendly people.

Lovely old bar in an off beat area of town. Really enjoyed the company of the staff.

It’s been a while since I had such a good service. Coming from the hospitality industry makes it really hard to find a place where standards are set high and people are looked after as they deserve. Amsterdam lacks good service all around but “De Eland” has it all. Beer is served cold and in the best possible way. For the kind of bar it is… it represents the local culture in a way any locals and specially tourists will have nothing to complaint about. Definitely recommend it wether you just want to sit have a coffee and see life passing by or want to have a good time with your friends and enjoy the night near one of the best areas of the city! Ps: The female bartender over the weekends is a star! She doesn’t like pictures taken btw… for people’s privacy sake 😮‍💨🙏🏽👌🏾

This is the real Amsterdam frequented by locals and one place where as long as you are not too loud you too can fit in. Walking around Amsterdam can get tiring and eventually all of the streets, shops and canals can start to blur. Here is a beautiful pub where you can relax and smile again. There is table service. It’s great for drinks and polite conversation. You can sit outside or in.

I shouldn't give pubs 5 stars. Makes me sound like an alcoholic. [I'm not an alcoholic. Honest. I like a drink. Or two. Or more... But who doesn't?...] August 2018. A chance encounter with a corner pub that turned out great. A lot because of the barmaid. She was a gem.And the atmosphere was great. If I lived there it'd definitley be on my "this is my local" list. I hope you enjoy it.

Yelp
We went to this little spot a couple of weeks ago with friends who grew up down the street. Fun little place where the locals hang out. Kind of cool thing was some of the other pub owners popped in here to catch up and visit over a cold beer while we were in. A couple had been in the bar business for generations. This was my first genever and I really enjoyed it. The bartender was awesome. He let me come behind the bar to take a couple of pictures of the stained glass butterfly in the ceiling.

Yelp
A bar type bar. On a sunday night the regular's make you feel welcome with good conversation. The bar tender will offer you samples of beer to help you choose the one you like best. This place has a local convivial feel and makes you want to take a seat anf soak up the ambience. And the bar looks cool too!

Yelp
Very Dutch and well known cafe in the middle of the city. 3*? Yes just 3***.... - It's nice, not awesome. - It's cute, not special. - Draft beers, not a lot of choice. - Toilets, that make you feel dirty but not too filthy to avoid. - Young and grey, old and gay, hip and done, work and fun. - Draft beers and no gingerale. - It's a locals bar with enough tourists. - Candles in the window and newspapers. It's good, but not a great place...thing is, there are better "kroegjes". PS...i think it would be good for first dates!

Yelp
Nice place, authentic Amsterdam people, but be very aware for the service, cause it happened many times youll have to pay for other peoples drinks, and you dont wanna do that for unknown peoples....

Yelp
Really nothing special about this bar, but it's a decent spot and probably the epitome of a typical Amsterdam cafe where young mix with old, tourists sit with locals and everyone is there for a drink and some people watching. All the cool kids find a spot outside but the inside is decent as well, especially on a rainy day!
