10 Best Coffee Shops in Madrid | Condé Nast Traveler

"Café de la Luz is just steps from Gran Vía, Madrid's main thoroughfare, and yet the mismatched furniture, whirring ceiling fans, white brick walls, and jam-packed bookshelves make you feel like you're in some bohemian socialite's living room, not one of Malasaña's most frequented coffee shop. There are no Chemexes or fancy beans in sight, but what the coffee here lacks in hipster street cred, it makes up for in old-timey charm (María biscuits on every saucer) and affordability (€1.50 per café con leche). You'd be hard-pressed to find another café in central Madrid that's simultaneously as pleasant and affordable as Café de la Luz." - Benjamin Kemper

My favorite coffee shop in Madrid I have been here around 30 times in the 10 months I've been in Madrid and I'm impressed every single time. I've taken clients, friends and dates here and they've all loved the place. The atmosphere of this place is so cozy and authentic. It is truly one of the best spots in town just to sit down and look around at all the intricate details they've curated. There's so many hidden little things where visitors can interact, write something down, or just observe. Not only that, but the coffee here is some of the nicest I've ever had. They put so much effort into making every drink one that is special and memorable. This combined with the immense variety of drinks makes for a perfect bit of exploration every single time I walk through the door. White I've only eaten here a few times, I can confidently recommend their toasts for a perfect afternoon snack. If that's not your thing, you can go there during their buzzing weekend nights. Where the cocktails and ambiance will make for a perfect night out. Also make sure to check out their basement during the weekends! It's an amplification of an already perfect space. I love Café de la Luz, and I would recommend it to literally anyone.

We took carrot cake and tea during a rainy day in Madrid. We needed to wait to be seated as the place was packed; we waited in the bar. If they dont have chairs in the bar available they dont take people in anymore so it is very popular. One of the waitresses was very friendly and was able to take the pressure the other one look a bit overwhelmed already and stressed out, luckily for us we got service from the nice waitress. Prices were fair and the table we got was perfectly located. They also serve food, and we are definitely going back.

This is my favourite place in madrid by far. It has an ambience I’ve never experienced before. It resembles the warmth of a house with such accuracy it’s nostalgic. You can take anyone here. The service is also really warm and kind.

Google

Everything was perfect! The service was friendly, I ate the best tarta de queso, coffee was cooked right and the atmosphere was super aesthetic

Google
Some friends took me here and it was a great surprise. The place has a lovely atmosphere, and the service was great. We had some hot drinks and cakes, delicious!!! I loved that I asked for a colacao and got the whole thing so I could put as much or little as I wanted. The carrot and chocolate cakes were specially good. And the mini Maria biscuit that came with the drink were a sweet touch. We were sitting at a table that had small drawers, I opened them (I'm nosy like that) and found lots of napkins with messages left by client, really nice! Definitely recommend it!

Google
My friend and I went to this cafe to chat and have a coffee. Upon entering the place was a bit empty nobody greeted us so we sat anywhere. Then the guy came and asked if it was just us two and asked us to move to a table for just two. Which I didn’t have a problem with even though I didn’t feel it was necessary especially since the place was empty. But what caused me to finally write this review was that he asked me to move my bag from a chair because people were going to sit there. So I did. But nobody sat there. It was very annoying to be moved from a spot just because he felt people would come in and fill those spots. Which nobody did. And honestly with that energy he’s not going to fill those spots because he just lost two customers bc he’s being picky about where they are sitting.

A wonderful place, cosy and welcoming, perfect for a nice fresh breakfast.

Yelp
This café was so much fun! I came with my friends to hangout and get some drinks. I just had a smoothie, but it was VERY refreshing. My friends had tea, coffee, and cider, which they were all content with. As for the vibe, I really like the atmosphere of this café! They play fun music and have aesthetic seating and decor. It's a bit loud in the restaurant but I think that's just part of the vibe!

Yelp
I had the tuna belly with the croissant and it was delicious. My friend order the Arctic salmon sandwich and enjoyed it very much. The cafe is really cute and cozy. Service was OK, people were a little rude. We had one issue with the waitress, she never asked us if we wanted to be charged Euros vs US dollars. When asked her about it, she rudely said that is not her problem and it was our problem with the bank. I didn't expect such a response. It could of easily been voided and do over.

Yelp
Went for the cheesecake. Delish. Cute and quaint bohemian vibe, perfect cool down after tapas. No cuppos sangria but the red wine with limon and vermouth tasted in the ballpark. Ill be back.

Yelp
Unless you are with more people the staff will stop you from sitting anywhere else other than the narrow bar...so if you go alone you will not be comfortable

Katherine S.

Yelp
Nice little cafe with a pleasant ambiance! Servers were friendly. We enjoyed our "mini brunch".

Yelp
If you like rules, this place is for you. When I walked in a man stopped me and told me I could only sit at a stool at a hightop because I am by myself. I asked to sit at one of the many available comfy chairs and he told me those seats are only for groups. Tried to use my laptop and they told me I could not use my laptop because it is Thursday. Cute environment, terrible service. I took a picture of the empty seats I was not allowed to sit at.

Yelp
Lovely cafe, dimly lit and mismatched furniture create a chill, Bohemian vibe. Had a pretty good cafe con leche and an excellent toast with goat cheese, arugula, and fig jam. Taking off a star for being too strict and a little unwelcoming with seating rules. Despite multiple tables, couches, and chairs being open on a Saturday afternoon, I was told people alone need to sit at the bar. If someone wasn't eating and only drinking coffee they would also need to sit at the bar. Mind you the bar is small and a far less comfortable experience than the rest of the cafe looked so despite the Instagram-worthy pictures of this place, beware unless you are 2+ and eating, you won't get to enjoy those environs.

Yelp
Food was very cheap! The place was super cute and quaint. I really enjoyed the toast with queso de cabra, arugula, and fig jam!

Yelp
Adorable little cafe near the very busy puerta del sol. Came here for a bite in the afternoon and found others reading or relaxing in the cafe. No laptops allowed though! We had some tostas and coffee and delicious fresh squeezed orange juice. The salmon tosta was a bit underwhelming, just a bad cut of salmon that wasn't super fresh it seemed. But other than that it was great, would recommend as a cozy getaway from the busy city center!
google avatar

Yelp
I really enjoyed this cafe! Good coffee, food, and environment. The service was great. I got the jamón tostas and I really enjoyed it as well. Good selection and not too busy!

Yelp
Coffee was tasty and was a good place to hang if you don't come to coffee shops to do work. The design of the space is interesting, with a mix of old school and new furniture. Things I wish I knew before I came: (1) They don't allow the use of laptops or iPads in the coffee shop. (2) There's also no AC.

Yelp
Came here to grab some food while waiting for our airbnb checkin time. The cafe is very intimate and cozy. They also had free WiFi which was really convenient! I got the cappuccino with oat milk, was very happy that they had the oat milk option. Boyfriend thought his coffee was just alright though. We also got the meat with tomato sauce on toast and a Mediterranean croissant sandwich, they were both really good and reasonably priced.

Yelp
Hidden gem in the middle of hustle and bustle in Madrid. Chic design, cozy and comfy. Great food and drinks. We had the mini brunch. Very good price. We had a wonderful and welcoming server name Blanca, along with her co-workers. Ambience was excellent. Definitely visit again. Thank you for your hospitality

Yelp
This cute little cafe had lots of comfy couches to sit on. It seems like a quiet place to get a drink or work on things; however, if you go on the weekend, it might not be as quiet as it normally is. What I ordered: I got the goat cheese salad and a cafe con leche. The salad was great, but there was nothing original about it. The coffee was good and what I expected it to be like. They had a fairly large menu with many food and drink options (alcoholic and non-alcoholic). Not my new favorite place, but still a nice, cozy spot!

Yelp
So cozy in the cafe and service was really good! Cheep cappuccino and loved the carrot cake!!

Yelp
We were lucky enough to come here twice in our trip and enjoyed both times. At first, we were looking for a oval cafe that was not in the main tourist areas. Cafe de la luz was just that! It's small inside and filled with locals. We both got the iced coffees to enjoy. They have WiFi and would be a good spot to work out of. Second time we went we got drinks before a flamenco show. Same fun and low key setting but still really fun. Hope to be back someday!

Yelp
By far one of my favorite breakfast experiences in Spain. Let me just throw it out there that is is probably my favorite breakfast experience in Europe. My husband and i did a lot of research before we arrived upon our conclusion to have breakfast here. The location was about a 10-15 min walk from our hotel so we were excited to try something local and small during our stay in Madrid. If you don't look quickly or closely enough, you could easily walk by this fine establishment. When inside, we were quickly seated at a small pub table booth near the window. My husband and I both ordered the ham and cheese croissant breakfast sandwich. We also ordered two coffees with milk. I ordered an orange juice and my husband ordered a bloody mary which he thought was fantastic. Our breakfast was simplistic but amazing. We never felt rushed and we enjoyed the chill atmosphere. The server was pleasant and attentive. The bathrooms are downstairs so make sure you know that you will have to climb up and down the stairs to get to the restroom. Overall, a great experience and a wonderful breakfast. I have absolutely no complaints. Only that we didn't come here more than once!

Yelp
Busy, small little place. Great ambiance and where many locals were found. Off the beaten path with good food.
google avatar

Veronica A.

Yelp
Awesome spot. Small and quaint. Jazz playing on the back and lits of natural light if you are planning to do some work. Cafe con leche was very good and the toast and mermalade warm and ready. Service was average. Overall super recommended.
google avatar

Adriana G.

Yelp
I had a lomito sandwich and it was THE BEST SANDWICH I've ever had. EVER. The service was great and the place is very cozy. My friend and I enjoyed being there and our meal was delicious. Great place to stop by!
google avatar

Jiajing M.

Yelp
Nice place at the corner of street. I like the salmon toast very much! The burritos are small and look cute, kinda like the idea it's toasted in the oven makes the skin taste good. At last, we shared one slice of chocolate cake, amazing!
google avatar

Robert G.

Yelp
Great place for breakfast or brunch Nice ambiance and cool setting Coffee and cappuccinos are really good, and the orange juice was really fresh The arugula goat cheese and jam over olive oil on toast was absolutely delicious
google avatar

Yelp
Came here for breakfast while I was in Madrid and I was not impressed. They were not open on time which was frustrating because we had a tour an 11AM so our breakfast ended up being rushed. The cappuccino was the only thing I enjoyed. I ordered the toast with goat cheese and sautéed onions and it was gross. I ended up not eating the goat cheese because it smelt and tasted weird so I wasn't chancing it. Something was definitely wrong. Yuck! My fiancé had the ham and cheese on a croissant and he said it was okay. Overall, not the best place to eat in Madrid.

Leslie G.

Yelp
Really delicious sandwiches and the best non alcoholic mojito! Great quiet ambiance but still comfortable for chit chatting!
google avatar

Emy Y.

Yelp
Cute setting but the lady that works there can be really rude to you. She made me and many other customers move and laptops are not allowed. I got recommended by a friend as a nice place to do work but I couldn't get anything done.
google avatar

Nicky E.

Yelp
Very cute, cozy, and intimate cafe in Madrid. I can't get over the low prices of breakfast in Espana - especially when you consider that the zumo is fresh and so so tasty. The coffee was perfect, and I got the croissant with jam - oh man, the jam in Spain is a fruit party in your mouth. Everything just seems better in Spain. Should probably move there so I can eat all the croissants, drink all the coffee and all the zumo.

Yelp
The breakfast was good very flavorful the waitress was a great person and the menu was very unique.

Yelp
I came here for brunch with a friend on my last day in Madrid. I really wished I had found out about this place sooner, I would have came here for brunch/lunch everyday (rather than Mercado St. Miguel). We came in at 11:45AM on a Wednesday and found an adorable two-seater right away. We opted for the brunch special (offered until 1PM) for 9,90€. The set let's you have your choice of coffee/tea/cola + freshly pressed OJ + choice of toast + choice of cake. Ambience: cozy, beautifully decorated. Great spot to have a coffee, snack or meal solo or with a friend. There is no a/c and it was 36*C today - thankfully we sat by the door so there was a breeze. Food, in the order I received them: 1. Espresso: Was more like a double espresso. Delicious, with a nice crema. 2. Freshly pressed OJ: Refreshing! Had pulp on the top (I'm a fan). 3. Toast with arugula, goat cheese and fig jam: Delicious and the portion of cheese and jam was generous. It was served on a crispy slice of bread. Flavourful and rich. Highly recommended. 4. Red velvet cake: Not my favourite, and it had a bright red colour to it. On the dry side - I would pass and go for the carrot cake or chocolate cake. Overall we had a great brunch experience here. It was a lovely spot to chit chat and eat and drink quality food at such an affordable price. I'm impressed!

Yelp
Feel like a local in this charming spot. Too late to order their brunch but I had fresh orange juice, great coffee, toast, and a delicious spinach quiche for 11 euros. Very happy!
google avatar

Yelp
Best breakfast experience in Spain. Chill atmosphere with lovely food and service. Could relax all day here. Nice break from the hustle of getting all the sites in. Salmon sandwich and arugula salad were both fresh and delicious!

Yelp
After 2 months in Madrid I found this place and totally felt in love with it at the first time. It's cozy and friendly, near Gran Via and offers a reasonable menu with a range of food and drink choices. Of course a bit crowded in the holidays or weekends but it doesn't matter to me, I love the vibes here and absolutely it's gonna be my favorite spot in Madrid.
google avatar

Fred C.

Yelp
Close to the main ave and our hotel we tried it out. Great food and coffee and fair prices. Decor is cool but not really big so plan on sitting anywhere there is a spot.
google avatar

Yelp
Soooo cute inside ~ as if a family parlor. We both had the quiche de bacon and cafe Americana con leche and it was all delicious. Very glad that Anabel spoke English.

Melissa U.

Yelp
Bonito lugar y comida muy rica! Voy a regresar cuando esté en Madrid para mas desayunos
google avatar

Fernando M.

Yelp
Cozy, cute, good food, menus in english too. Free 2 hour wifi. They "only" serve breakfast til 1pm. Also brunch available which comes w coffee/tea, OJ, one choice of sandwich and cake for like 9€. I would come back.

Giselle M.

Yelp
An excellent place to study and have a few drinks after work. The chocolate cake, Khalua spiked coffee, and hard cider were amazing, I can't wait to go back
google avatar

Caroline P.

Yelp
Came here based on all the positive reviews and it lived up to the hype!! Theres an English menu and free wifi. I ended up getting the tuna salad for breakfast and it was hands down so incredibly fresh and delicious. It wasn't salad, it was heaven.
google avatar

Shirley H.

Yelp
4/5 - cute cafe with cozy set up. Had a late breakfast one morning here and their breakfast menu goes until 1pm. Cafe con leche was average but the toasted ciabatta with tomatoes, olive oil and salt was delicious. This breakfast set was €2.90. My waitress wasn't the most friendliest person but would come back to this place again!
google avatar

Syed W.

Yelp
Food was not bad.. tuna salad was not tasty.. canned tuna on top of some dry salad! Service was horrible. The waiter didn't smile she wasn't not friendly at all.. she was slow.. really disappointed!
google avatar

Jasper H.

Yelp
Wow, I'm pretty lucky to have booked a hotel near this cafe. It seems like good service is part of Spanish culture. The waiter/bartender was super friendly. I ordered the "Nordic" which is the smoked salmon sandwich and a spinach quiche. Both of which tasted amazing. It's kinda busy in the evening, so it's hard to find good seats. Other than that, the positive reviews speak the truth. This café is quite the gem.
google avatar

Kim N.

Yelp
Love this place! Such a cute cafe especially for breakfast/brunch. The customer service was great. And if you don't speak Spanish, not a problem. The workers there speak English and they have an English menu. I had the mini brunch. It came with orange juice (it was fresh squeeze and very sweet), tea/coffee, pick of toast, and cake. For the toast I had the salmon lox. I really enjoyed it; there wasn't too much Creme cheese in it. For cake I tried the chocolate. Omg it's to die for! And the carrot cake was amazing too.
google avatar

Arash R.

Yelp
Friendly barista who speaks english Cappuccino was among top 10 i had in my life Orange juice was real orange juice with pulps No wonder where all those good reviews came from! They have free wifi The menu is not as rich as your typical american restaurants (not many options) but this is typical of euro that you don't get as many choices as you get in states. Give it a try if you are around!

Tamica P.

Yelp
Love the resturant. Staff was very friendly. I tried their smoked cod with avocado and olive oil on toast. It was great! I also tried pear cider it's really good. My friend tried their smoked salmon with cream cheese and dill she was very satisfied along with her mint tea. I loved the decor as well. I wasn't able to try their quiche but maybe next time.
google avatar

Wilberto L.

Yelp
Amazing place. The food was excellent and so was the coffee. The place has a very relaxed ambient and was very clean as well. The staff was friendly and was it was pretty cheap
google avatar

Marjory R.

Yelp
Just ate here today and we absolutely loved this place. Ambiance was quirky yet worked. We came here specifically for brunch and had the goat cheese, fig jam and arugula tosta, spinach quiche, bacon quiche, jamón and queso tosta, and cafe con leche. Everything was super tasty and filling, plus pricing was really reasonable. Close to la Gran Via and metro stations. Has free wifi for 2 hours. Vegetarian friendly, my sister is a vegetarian and she had the spinach quiche and a salad and was satisfied with her meal! Service was great! The only issue with this place is that it gets really hot (we've been in Madrid since May 18 and its been in the 80s) and there is no a/c, plus there are only a few ceiling fans which don't seem to be very effective.
google avatar

Domenica G.

Yelp
The food was delicious! From coffee to toast to cake. I'd highly recommend this place. And it's so cute, cozy and eclectic. We'll probably come back before we leave since it was that good.
google avatar

Marc F.

Yelp
We were looking for a charming coffee shop after having just arrived to Madrid and needing a little bit of a freshen up. This place is delightful. Urban and homey, a little get away from the bustle of the city streets.
google avatar

Kailee A.

Yelp
Excellent!!! The fresh orange juice, cappuccino, salmon were a perfect breakfast! Perfect atmosphere, very busy!!
google avatar

Yelp
This was a great place to grab breakfast before going out for the day. We grabbed some cappuccinos and a small bite and it was perfect. Cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, and tasty food & drinks. Things we ordered and would recommend: thegoat cheese, fig jam, and arugula toast; the ham & cheese on a croissant; and the chocolate cake.
