10 Best Places for Tango in Buenos Aires | Condé Nast Traveler

"This historic café and haunt of legendary tango singer Carlos Gardel opens its secret backroom drapes every night and transforms into a grand ballroom tanguería where 21 professional dancers glide through the history of tango in Argentina. Sure, parts of the experience may scream tourist central, but the excellent talent, music, costumes, production, and legacy make all the difference." - Allie Lazar

A hidden gem in Once. I enjoy walking around the Once area, and this café stood out as an underrated spot. It also hosts tango shows, though it's worth checking the schedule in advance to see which days they’re held. I had a slice of cake and a coffee. As is common in much of Buenos Aires, the coffee was below average — but the cake was delicious and clearly made with quality ingredients. The restrooms were spotless, and the overall environment is very family-friendly. It’s a pleasant place to sit, relax, and take in the atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit.

Google
The tango show and dinner exceeded my expectations. The building is an exceptional example of an early 20th century theatre architecture that has been modernized to meet todays artistic requirements. The food was tasty, filling and very satisfying with VERY large portions. The tango dancers performed multiple acts for over an hour and the live music provided by the 5-piece band was outstanding.

An absolutely amazing dining experience at Café de Los Angelitos! From start to finish, everything was perfect. We went with dinner option, and it was sooooooo worth it! Food was really good. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, ensuring we had everything we needed throughout the night. The shuttle service made getting there easy and stress-free. And the tango show? Simply spectacular! The dancers, music, and overall atmosphere created a truly unforgettable evening. If you’re looking for an authentic Buenos Aires experience, this is the place to be. Highly recommend!

Tango Hotel de Mayo staff (Franco) says: "It's the best tango show in town, best dinner as well." So we booked it, paid $100pp, included pickup/delivery by Diego. Evelyn (reception) seated us on an end table. Macarena & crew graciously served us drinks (Portillo white/malbec, bottled water); dinner: corn soup/salmon tartare; Argentine angus beef steak (big, succulent); and caramel tart/merengue. The two-hour tango show was outstanding: Five young pairs (30s) showed technical excellence and a mature pair (45s) who exuded romantic passion. Music by a powerful-voiced chanteuse and an operatic singer; and a 5-pc band: piano (he played all pieces), accordion (his solo elicited a loud ovation by the crowd of 200), guitar, violin cello and a violinist (her solo was well-applauded). The ensemble's rendition of MJ's Billy Jean was the highlight of the evening.

Our group visited for dinner and a Tango performance. There was an opportunity to get a photo with several of the performers and they were very gracious. The food was outstanding and the service was fantastic. Once the show started and dinner was soon forgotten. The musicians were outstanding and the dancers were fantastic.

Google
Just watched a most entertaining and absorbing tango performance at Cafe De Los Angelitos. The performers were true professionals, full of poise, passion, precision and flair. The accompanying orchestra was great and so were the 2 singers of the evening. The venue itself was in a beautiful old vintage building, but I found the food to be quite average, although my husband did enjoy his steak. I would highly recommend the tango show though, it was thoroughly enjoyable.

Google
Tango show. Tourist thing but very enjoyable and well organised show. We chose the steak option which was a very generous portion and tasty. Wine topped up frequently. The dancer were absolutely fabulous.

Google
Great cafe and excellent tango show. It is one of the oldest cafes in Buenos Aires. The show starts at 9:45 pm. Dinner starts at 8 pm. We arrived around 9 pm and we had enough time for dinner before the show.

Yelp
After my dinner at Don Julio, the hotel arranged for transportation to this venue for the tango show. Seated in the top balcony of the theatre- the there was a live orchestra playing above the stage, and the dancers wore beautiful costumes and the main singers had great voices. Service - with my ticket price ($150 per person including transportation), there was a dessert and cocktails. Server was efficient. Ambiance- nice theatre but the cushions could have been cleaner, there was a red wine spill on my seat - ugh

Yelp
I came here with my tour group for dinner and tango show. The space is absolutely gorgeous with elegant, classy decor. We were seated downstairs in the spacious dining area, where we enjoyed a 3 course meal before the tango show. There were little bread rolls, chimichurri oil, and crostini with some type of tasty cured meat, which made for mouthwatering bites. For my appetizer, I had the Baked Duo of Argentinian empanadas. One was filled with meat and veggies, while the other contained cheese and onion. Both were very yummy, but I preferred the meat one, as the meat was juicy, tender, and flavorful. The outer breading was wonderfully crispy and pillowy. I selected the slow cooked braised pork for my entree. The pork was cooked with honey, white wine, ginger, and served with sweet potatoes and compressed pears. The pork was a generous portion, and delightfully succulent, juicy, well seasoned with the sweet sauce. The sweet potatoes and pear were perfectly cooked and worked well together. Dessert was Suspiro Porteno, consisting of evaporated condensed milk, Italian meringue flavored with moscato and cinnamon. This was quite unique, but enjoyable. It was creamy, smooth, as well as sweet. And of course, there was coffee to end the dinner. Then came the tango show, which was amazing and like nothing like I've ever seen before. Each act had an actual storyline. There was passionate and skilled dancing, beautiful singing, live orchestra, as well as gorgeous costumes. It was a lovely evening filled with delicious food and beautiful dancing.

Yelp
Their Dinner and Tango show was a fabulous experience. The staff provided a warm welcome at arrival and swiftly seated guests as they arrived. The guests included what appeared to be a very large tour group, a large number of couples, and a few solo diners like myself. The staff seemed equally attentive to everyone which in my experience is not always true for solo diners. The dinner included an appetizer, a main dish, and dessert with three choices in each category. For the appetizer I chose a corn soup which was delicious. For the main I chose the pork which was served with sweet potato. The pork was incredible tender and very good but the sweet potatoes were a bland accompaniment. The size of the main entrees were huge and I didn't finish mine as I wanted to save room for dessert which I was glad I had as the pavlova I had chosen for dessert was amazing. The accompanying drinks, including the wine were free flowing and my glass was never close to empty until I turned them away when I'd had enough. The same was true for the water. After dessert coffee was served to those who wanted it. The tango show started after dinner. I appreciated that the singing and music were all performed live. The tango dancers were all very talented, fit, and had great chemistry. The costumes, sets, and lighting enhanced the tango numbers. The dining room was gorgeous. I had read reviews of guests at other establishments offer dinner and a tango show feeling crammed in

Yelp
This place came highly recommended for its food and tango show, and neither disappointed. We really enjoyed dinner and the service was very good. The tango show was outstanding and something not to be missed in a trip to BA or Argentina, in general. The athleticism of all the dances was really impressive and made for a fun and culturally-engaging evening. The venue itself is really great - I felt like I'd stepped back to the 1930's when I walked in. I wish we'd had time to return for lunch but will do so when we come back to BA - hopefully soon! Tip - be prepared to pay with American dollars, as is the suggestion throughout Argentina.

Yelp
Saw an Authentic Tango Experience here after some really good food. The steak here was decent compared to the other ones we had in Argentina. The risotto rice here was made well, but nothing stood out too much, expect for the Tango Show! We had empanadas here, rice and other grain options, but they were decent compared to the other empanadas we've tried on this trip. This is definitely not a Mexican restaurant though! You can get a good Argentinian experience from eating and watching the show here.

Yelp
We were delighted with our evening's dinner tango show. Timely pickup from our hotel, prompt dinner service with tasty food and generous wine pours, and the variety and quality of the tangos presented were delightful. We particularly enjoyed the 5 piece combo providing accompaniment.

Yelp
DISCLAIMER: this is not a Mexican restaurant I really really wanted to give this place a 5 star, cause the place is a 5 star for sure, beautiful deco, floors, curtains, art in the walls This was my second visit and the first one was amazing, but this time there were some details that could've made it better. Let's start with the food, it is definitely the reason why you should come to this place, besides the place itself. The cakes are amazing, the coffee is great, has some of the best pastries in town. Let me tell you today was a 110 F degrees afternoon in Buenos Aires city and this very closed place didn't have AC, the waiter told me it was broken, let's pretend that we believe that for a second but if that was the case, why wouldn't you put at least a fan in the salon??? It was insufferable in there, plus our waiter didn't have the best attitude towards it, since he gave me a cold look when I asked. Plus the restrooms are super pretty and clean and the place is disable accesible, it even has it's own elevator Will be back just for the food, probably in fall lol.

Yelp
I didn't realize this was a really amazing Tango spot (or I did) until I went to one that was not so good. Been to Buenos Aires twice now (love it) which is know for their Tango. This place is also a historic cafe for coffee and tea during the day, the tango show and dinner is one of the best at night! Originally called Bar Rivadavia, this café was once the haunt of poets, musicians, even criminals, which is why a police commissioner jokingly called it "los angelitos" in the early 1900s. The Tango show is Top Notch with a live orchestra, amazing costumes, and choreographed by the same people as Rojo Tango (which is #1 Tango show in Buenos Aires and $290 a person) This Tango show is $130 a person and all meal and all you can drink included in the price! I absolutely loved it and want to go back again! I do not remember what the food is in the photos so I apologize but most is a set menu with a few choices here and there. Perfect for me! Amazing experience you HAVE to participate in while in the beautiful city of Buenos Aires!

Yelp
What a spectacular show! The show follows tango from the Belle Epoque through the Golden Years to Neo Tango. Excellent five-piece orchestra with imaginitive arrangements. A jazzy candombe, "Buenos Aires" from Evita with a nod to milonga, though a dark one (has no one else but me found it strange that Evita had no tango numbers in it even with the reference to Agustin Magaldi?). I enjoyed a very cool Bond Girl Pink Panther number in the style of Piazzolla. Tango, you have done it again, and I remember why I love you so. The current menu looks spectacular on paper, but I found it "meh." However I was here for the show. Nuce bebefit, they will pick you up from your hotel and return you. Wine is free and good! Very generous pours.

Yelp
I came here for the tango show only, and so cannot comment on the food. Now this was my first tango show, so I am certainly not an expert, but I liked this show very much. I thought the dancers were excellent, as was the five piece orchestra, the costume and set changes were classy, and while the wine they poured beforehand was not exceptional, it was poured rather liberally. The front of the café looked quaint, and I would gladly go back to have a bite to eat, a drink, or even to see another tango performance.

Yelp
We went here for dinner and a tango show. Great food, great wine, great show, and a great way to spend an evening in BA.

Yelp
This is more a review of the tango show than the food itself. We spent an evening at this place. Entering this place takes you back in time and reminds you of a bygone era. Our group had a small private tango lesson session with 2 of the artistes before we saw the show. It was very good... the dancers were elegant, gracious and very friendly. We had a great time trying to learn the few basic steps of tango - and see them glide on the floor. The tango show itself was spectacular. 1 and a half hours of great dancing, singing. The costumes are great - the artistes are superb. Its such a difficult dance form but they make it look so easy and elegant. Watching a tango show is a must do in Buenos Aires, and I am glad we did it in this place.

Yelp
The show was nice they did a good job but it got a little long in the tooth. The food was deplorable, they called it a ribeye and it was peasant pot roast, I sent it back. The wine was plentiful and good. When I showed the host what a real Ribeye looked like he got angry and stormed off. They replaced my so called steak with vegan ravioli, it was not better. At the end the waiter came by an asked for a tip, well I'm sure you can guess what happened. I know this sounds like I want to be cheap but what happened to the days you tipped on the experience. Except for the wine and show it was not a good experience and We paid a lot of money. I hope Tigres is better today.

Yelp
It's got that old school vibe that really draws folks in. Had a mixed taster for two. Killer chocolate cake. Though. I grow tired of ham and cheese on every damn sandwich. That's to be expedited though in a place as porteño as this. And this is the place we chose. If it's cold i suggest staying the hell away from that door unless you wish to be carried away in the prolonged blast of frigid air as a geriatric patron holds the door open for the time it takes to write this review. Though. If you're in the neighborhood and peckish it's worth a gander as the atmosphere is classy and the prices are good. Plus. Unless you're trying to get Peruvian food this area isn't full of decent options. Be advised. When they say for 2 it's for 3

Yelp
The beef was amazing! The service was equally great. As for the Tango Show, exactly what you imagine when you think of Argentina. Overall a great experience.

Yelp
Dinner was subpar. The waiter was accommodating and allowed me to order a salad as I was hoping for a healthier option. The salad was fine but nothing great. I would suggest eating dinner elsewhere and going to see the tango show. The acts were beautiful and the costumes fun!
