On the Grid : Café De Tuin

"Located in the heart of the Jordaan, this typical brown café serves up a variety of beers and music. De Tuin perfectly captures the dark “gezellig” (cozy) atmosphere that Dutch brown café are so popularly known for. Prices are extremely fair for the location, but expect it to be packed after work hours and on weekends. Keep an eye out for their cat, as he doesn’t enjoy being stepped on!" - The Artificial

On a mission to experience bitterballen we headed here, thank goodness! An amazing selection of beer on tap, and the bitterballen which were very good. We also ordered french fries, I always rate these out of 10, a 7 in this instance, still not bad. We had a few other selections from the menu, spicier but well done. Not to be missed if in Amsterdam!

Drinks only - fun bar with fair prices in a good area of the Jordaan. Would recommend for a before or after drink if dining at one of the popular local spots near by. I even saw people walk in from the pizza restaurant across the street and buy drinks to take over there.

Once in a lifetime experience! If you want to know what living the life of an Amsterdammer feels like you can‘t miss out on this spectacular location. The cozy lights, the fresh drinks, the „gezellig“ ambient and the lovely service fusion to an utmost prestigious experience. The decoration let‘s you revive the XVI century whilst the tapestry is straight out of an interior design magazine. We shall return for another Crawl!

Beautiful and light bar even at the back with glass ceiling, great atmosphere. Bonus points for a fair share of delicious aperol spritz for 8.5€ and grolsch! Appropriate even for larger groups

The bar is located in a very nice street in Jordaan. It’s cozy and convenient to sit inside as outside on a good weather. Their Dutch typical bites are really good and they have all beers, wines, gin and drink selections. Their service isn’t that good. I can understand their overwhelmed but they can tend to be rude a bit.

Stopped for beers and bitterballen. The staff are kind and friendly, the music is great and so is the atmosphere and the choice of beers.

Very friendly local place. Bitterballen and Oma Bobs croquettes are delicious. Service is a bit slow but normal for the area. A go to place in local town of Jordaan NL.

Had a great time here with friends before catching a flight. It’s a lively and cozy spot – the kind of place where the noise level lets you laugh out loud without anyone thinking you need therapy. The bartenders were fantastic, loved the experience. A special shoutout to Tanja for playing my song request and for just being sweet, the other bartenders were cool as well.😁

Yelp
We had toasties and a blt. Delicious. Beers on tap. I heard after we were here they have the best bitterballen. This is just a lovely neighborhood place and one of the best cafes in the Jordaan Amsterdam neighborhood. Very nice and pleasant staff.

Yelp
*** 3.5 stars *** They have a Zenato Valpolicella on the wine list (for a reasonable 35 EUR), which is my favorite Italian winery. We had two bottles of it, obviously. Not quite the Amarone, but for less than half the price, I highly recommend it. Small, cute cafe, fun for catching up with friends over food and wine. They have a bit of everything - curry, burgers, mediterranean, etc - so they do a bunch of things well, but nothing great. I had the Chicken (Poussin) which was fine, but there was nothing special about it. It was served on the bone and didn't have a lot of flavor, but I like chicken so I liked it. A good place for a casual meal when you aren't looking for much more.

Yelp
Five stars for the BITTERBALLEN! Sooooo good. What are they? A Dutch treat: crunchy fried balls filled with incredibly delicious, meat-based filling, that you dip in mustard. This joint has some damn fine bitterballen. We inhaled two orders and washed them down with beers. BITTERBALLEN!!!

Yelp
Solid cafe. It's a nice place to in the morning with a friend for a cup of cappuccino. We came back in the evening for some bitterballen and beer. I didn't drink because I was on medication, but my friend said it was pretty good. The bitterballen was solid, but the more bitterballen I try, the more I feel that it's a relatively easy food to get right. I just like the atmosphere. It's relaxing and has a local charm.

Yelp
The best part of this spot is the service and the beer. The food was just ok. I asked for something "local" and ended up eating a mustard soup. Anyhow, the beer was great and sitting outside provided nice views. Great location.

Yelp
Charming and cozy café! They serve good coffee and lekker lekker sandwiches! Its a perfect place for a short lunch break. We had a avocado-mustard-sandwich with old amsterdam-cheece, it was very tasty!

Yelp
Not the best cappuccino I had in Amsterdam but it was definitely satisfying on a rainy October morning . Not much for breakfast but friendly waitresses in a charming intimate neighborhood cafe that apparently doubles as a bar later in the day . . .

Yelp
It is a charming cafe in the Jordan area. Perfect for coffee and lunch. They also has outdoor sitting when the weather is nice and is a percent spot for people watching in the Jordan area. For lunch, they have a wide selection of sandwishes and they are all reasonable price from 3 to 6 euros. Since it is in the Jordan area, it normally become quite crowded at night time and it opens until 3 am in the weekend.

Yelp
This little cafe should be on every tourist's itinerary, like Anne Frank house and the flower market. It's an institution. Fourtunately most tourists don't have enough time to drop by. I've had my first beer in De Tuin more than 10 years ago and nothing has changed. Then and now, inconspicuous and unagitated it doesn't try to be more than it is: a simple brown cafe. It's still very popular, mainly amongs Dutch, mostly crowded and uber gezellig. To not like De Tuin: mission impossible.

Yelp
Nice friendly place with cheap beers and finger food! Recommended if you are in the Jordaan district.

Yelp
Meh. This place is fine. It's an old neighborhood bar, which means it could be cleaner and smell better. The barback was very friendly to the men she knew at the bar and very unfriendly to everyone else. The bitterballen was average. It's right in the center of the Jordaan so the location is convenient.

Yelp
De Tuin is one of my favourite spots to grab a beer after dinner in De Jordaan. Located in one of the most beautiful streets in Amsterdam, it is a bruin cafe with some kind of modern twist (I guess that's all because of the music they usually play and the atmosphere). The service is "blah", though, just correct. A few more smiles wouldn't hurt.

Yelp
A small brown cafe in the Jordaan that must be visited on any trip to Amsterdam. Excellent local craft beer, and the small menu on the wall will be translated from Dutch with a smile by the friendly staff. It's easy to spend a few hours here resting your weary feet - for bonus points sit out the front enjoy the watching the tourists clumsily weaving heir way down the street, upsetting the local population on their bikes!

Yelp
Very cozy, quiet during the week, great place to hang out on the weekends, especially if you can seat outside and watch the parade of locals and tourists alike as they cruise through the Jordaan. I used to work around the corner from the cafe and spent many a lovely afternoon hour sipping coffee, reading the paper. Good cafe food, good selection of beers, altogether chill.

Yelp
We stopped here for a late lunch while wondering through the Jordaan. This restaurant fits perfectly into my impression of the Jordaan. The neighborhood is picturesque, adorable, charming (especially after aimlessly wandering through the Red Light District and Dam Square). The restaurant is the same. We sat outside as the restaurant was overflowing with families. I ordered the hummus sandwich with eggplant and cucumbers on multigrain bread. It was scrumptious... Just perfect. My SO ordered a chevre sandwich with honey and walnuts. It came on a multigrain bun (but you could order Italian bread instead) and was also very good, though not as jet-lag friendly. Service was fine, nothing special. Prices were reasonable... a little over 4€ for a sandwich. Great spot to grab a drink or a nibble.

Yelp
Stepped in here to get out of the October rain, and discovered a wonderful cafe with swoon-worthy Nina Simone music playing, excellent coffee and beer selection. I would move into this neighbourhood just to be within walking distance from Cafe de Tuin.

Yelp
it doesn't matter what mood you are in or what the weather outside is like - you can always find comfort in here. we were visiting amsterdam late october; the weather can be quite cold and at times gloomy. we were here several times - had tea and/or beer and was petting the cafe's cute old cat. the interior is of nice relaxing wood and low lighting with high ceiling. they have a poster from wwii that is poignant - it is about working together instead of being obstructionists; it applies to american politics now. i hope one day we will work together for a common good instead of being selfish bastards. next time i am in amsterdam; i will be here.

Yelp
One of my favorite places in Amsterdam. We visited daily for a beer and sitting outside. The sandwich I had was delicious. Atmosphere was very casual and relaxed.
