We visited Café Eiles on December 7, 2025, shortly after arriving in Vienna. We were looking for a place to rest after the journey and have a quick bite.
Most restaurants nearby were fully packed, and this café looked slightly less crowded, so we decided to give it a try. Even so, we ended up waiting around 5-7 minutes until some guests left and a table became available. Unfortunately, the table we were offered was dirty and sticky. No one came to clean it, so I ended up doing it myself using wet and dry tissues (not exactly the kind of welcome one hopes for after a long trip).
We weren’t given menus either, and catching a server in this busy café proved difficult. In the end, we had to take the menus ourselves from a stand behind our table. After sitting for almost 10 minutes, a server finally approached. Since the atmosphere already felt rather unwelcoming, we decided not to stay long and ordered just liver dumpling soup (€5.90), goulash soup (€5.90), pumpkin soup (€4.90), and hot chocolate (€5.50).
While waiting, I visited the restroom. It was dirty and had an unpleasant odor, which didn’t improve the overall impression.
When the soups arrived, we were unpleasantly surprised by the portion sizes. The soup plates were extremely small; in fact, the hot chocolate was served in a larger cup than the soups. Comparing the size of the bread roll to the soup plate says it all. The liver dumpling soup contained exactly one dumpling, and while the goulash soup at least had some meat, overall the value for money was very poor. The food tasted acceptable, but nothing more.
After finishing, we managed to catch a server and asked for the bill. It took at least 15 minutes to arrive. Given the overall experience, we didn’t plan to leave a tip. However, when the bill finally came, we noticed that a 10% tip had already been added without any prior notice (€23.10 + €2.31 Trinkgeld). I find this completely unacceptable. Tipping should be a guest’s choice, especially when the service and cleanliness fall far below expectations.
Overall, this visit was disappointing: dirty tables, poor restroom hygiene, very small portions for the price, slow service, and an automatically added tip made for an experience we would not repeat. Vienna has countless wonderful cafés. Unfortunately, this wasn’t one of them.
