8 Best Coffee Shops in Berlin | Condé Nast Traveler

"You may want to tuck in your shirt as you enter the tony Tiergarten neighborhood and into the Italian neoclassical villa that houses one of Europe’s great old coffeehouses. Inside, parquet floors, waiters in black and white suits, and marble-topped tables with leather banquettes make the Viennese-inspired cafe feel like a relic of pre-war Berlin. Film buffs may even recognize the place, as it’s where Tarantino shot the tense cafe scene in Inglourious Basterds ." - Eliot Stein

Google
I had breakfast there two times in my 4 days stay in Berlin. The place has a traditional old time up market flairs. Leather boots, wooden small chairs and newspapers. Breakfast was great. We ordered the big set and shared. Coffee was great. My cappuccino came with latte art and not at all too milky, served with a small glass of water. What I like the most is their breads, quite a variety which are freshly baked in house downstairs. Service’s very professional, formal but reaches down to customers. I would reserve the table before I go next time. Price wise, not the cheapest but I think it’s definitely worth it.

Google
Super cool, building/house and the host was great. The servers are like a bit too European and attend to you when they are ready. Yeah they are busy on a Saturday afternoon but could at least acknowledge you when you have a need. Their colleagues don't acknowledge you if not their table and if luckily one stops they say, "Sorry you'll have to ask your server" and off they go. Strudel was tasty with but mixture and the Assam tea was quite nice

Yuan Feng

Google
A good place for afternoon tea. The apple strudel is great and is recognized as the best in the cafe, but the other torte is disappointing. The peach cake is not special at all and not worthy.

Ch Wo

Google
Lunch is in the more formal "library" area while cakes and brunch is in the non table cloth brighter area. Nice selection of German food. Can be a bit pricey considering there are some good German restaurants around serving food that is just as delicious but I think it's still one of those places to be when you are a tourist. I didn't have any cakes but from what I did see, they're aren't better than most of the places that sell cakes in Berlin.

Steffonn Chan

Google
Eggs Benedict was pretty good. The omlette rather mediocre. Service was slow. Sad to see this restaurant with so much character and charm being so poorly maintained. A renovation is past due. It has lost most of the beauty and charm it once radiated.

Leigh Cooper

Google
Unexpectedly large space, can accommodate groups that came in for lunch. Back garden is lovely to sit in. On the expensive side but good service and a nice, quiet and relaxed atmosphere. It definitely feels European, and it’s easy to see why lots of tourists find their way here.

Tim Clifton-Wright

Google
Had an excellent breakfast here in their lovely garden. There was a wide selection available on the menu, including a number of typical German dishes and the staff were friendly and efficient. The food and drink was very good and reasonably priced for the quality. Well worth a visit.

Karina

Google
The lunch meal of the day which was a chicken curry was course a german version of the dish which was tasty. The service was polite and quite professional, although the cappuccino I ordered was forgotten. But what made me disappointed was the beef soup which turned out not to be the soup at all but a little bit of salty broth with thin slices of bread in it. There were no meat or vegetables in it. So it cannot be called a soup but a broth or bouillon. The prices are high at this restaurant, especially for the drinks. It was also very full and loud here, since the tables are really close to each other it makes a feeling of a student cantine.

Yelp
I googled cool places to visit in Berlin and this location came up as the actual restaurant that the scene from "Inglorious Bastards" was filmed. We were close to the cafe so decided to give it a try. We of course ordered the Apple strudel and pumpkin soup. The pumpkin soup was delicious and the the food presentation was so appetizing. The strudel was a little dry but pretty good. The service was really , really slow and it took awhile for us to get our order. I would check it out. It was an interesting place for sure.

Has been closed since June 2023! Need to update please! I have to write more in order to post

Yelp
There are many Einstein cafes in Berlin but don't be fooled this is the one. We wanted to visit based on that infamous Apple Strudel scene from that Tarantino film. Movies aside this place is just cool and classy. The servers know a thing or two about great service and the food, oh the food! We ordered the scrambled eggs with bacon & onions, smoked salmon with bagel and Chicken club sandwich with Cappuccino. We shared a Chocolate Torte for dessert-amazing! The eggs were scrambled and cooked to perfection (asked for soft scramble), chicken club was also tasty as well the Salmon. We shared a Chocolate Torte for dessert-amazing! We got a tour of the 2nd level which has a former cigar/smoking room as well a Scotch drinking room. They will also show you the room where that famous scene was shot. A must stop when visiting Berlin! For the food, vibe and wonderful staff.

Yelp
Love this place! Classic, good food. Great ambiance. But now closed for refurbishment.

Yelp
Arrived at about 11:15 am and was told the wait time was about an hour. Boy is this place busy for a Wednesday. It's famous. Well this is my first time in Berlin, and I know I'll never return, so I definitely will wait. As soon as I'm seated I'll continue this review. Got seated in about 15 minutes. We're a party of six. The service excelente. Took our orders quickly and professionally. They don't poach eggs, so I had mine hard boiled. Not much you can do to mess them up. Perfect. The danish, salmon and bacon great. The coffee to die for. Great breakfast! A must go to place.

Jonothon S.

Yelp
Amazing food and ambience. This location is the original location where the infamous apple strudel scene in inglorious basterds was shot. This place however is independently famous for its food and apple strudel. First off, the apple strudel here does not come with whipped cream like in the movie. The cream is just normal liquid cream. Nevertheless, I liked it. The apples used are crunchy and tart and not overly sweet. The schnitzel is huge, and really flattened thin and tender. Overall, I would definitely recommend

Yelp
I enjoyed a couple meals at Cafe Einstein during my trip in the patio area out back and it's easy to see why this place is so highly regarded. The food was delicious, both mornings my family did various dishes including the omelette, scrambled eggs, and set breakfasts along with excellent cafe au lait which comes as separate coffee and steamed milk to combine at the table. The interior is nice for sense of old Berlin but having such nice weather made the back patio more attractive. The crowd is mostly German professionals with a handful of tourists mixed in. Service was kind and efficient, overall a great place to eat.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in this Berlin café in part for its use in the movie Inglorious Bastards, and their killer apple strudel. They lose a star for less than attentive service.

Yelp
My husband and I enjoyed a delicious dinner here over Christmas! The restaurant is so charming and I love how they maintained the original character of the building. The service, food and drinks were all very good and the restaurant had great ambiance and a full dining room. Our favorites were the schnitzel and cold cucumber salad as well was the apple strudel.

Yelp
Having gotten in to Berlin very late, I started calling around at 10pm to see who was still open for dinner. I reached the Einstein Stammhaus and they told me the kitchen closed at 11, so I rushed over. I was seated in Dominique's area, and she was over quickly to take my order. The menu has quite an interesting variety, and I was quite famished so it was game on. Rollberger beer, a tuna ahi appetizer, and Wiener schnitzel main course. The ahi tuna - these guys get it amazingly right. Huge chunks of tuna, seared lightly and sprinkled with sesame, served atop a mango chutney with microgreens and a balsamic glaze. Fantastic! The schnitzel - well, I guess Dominique took me at my word when I said I wanted the large (there is a smaller option). It was wider than the dish, resting atop crispy potatoes, and with both berry garnish and lemon available to season it with. For the last dish of the night that the kitchen made, it was absolutely perfect. Exceedingly thin, breading not too thick, and very tender. Lest I forget, it also comes with a side of cucumber salad, which was both crisp and slightly herbed, with a very clean finish. Dominique continued to be very attentive and was there whenever I needed anything, yet didn't hover over the table. The ambience is muted, with candles burning on unoccupied tables and the light turned low. With the vaulted ceilings and numerous mirrors, the place feels larger than it is, yet still intimate. This is a great spot for dinner, and I will look forward to my next opportunity to visit.

Yelp
The famous cafe where they shot inglorious basterds. The apple strudel was so delicious. The apple was cut into small pieces and had a nice crispy texture to it. The vanilla sauce was great while the pastry was decent I also got an omlet which was great as well :) the price though is a bit high but well... You are in kudamm Good and fast service... And they accept cards!
google avatar

Jocelyn C.

Yelp
Heh, I only came here because I wanted to see the apple strudel cafe from Inglorious Basterds! I got latte and an apple strudel here, but unlike the movie... they serve it with vanilla sauce and not whipped cream. Clearly vanilla sauce is a much less aggressive garnish. Note: The film scene for Inglorious Basterds is in a closed room that is separate and often has functions. So if you are coming to the cafe just to eat here, ask the wait staff if you can see the room. (I made sure to ask very nicely and left a tip since the server was so nice!) I did not particularly enjoy the strudel here, but the service was excellent. The pastry and texture itself was not exceptional, but I was cheery since I really just wanted to see the scene that this movie was shot. :) This cafe actually feels quite dingy and smells a little when you go downstairs. It hides behind a mask of old school glamour, but it needs a solid cleaning as everything feels just a little sticky and dirty. Be careful on your way to the WC as the stairs are slick as hell!
google avatar

Maria T.

Yelp
This café is famous for the apple strudel scene in Inglorious Basterds where Hans Landa is a scary basterd by just eating strudel! The strudel was lovely - it was huge, easily enough for 2 people. It was Sunday brunch time when we were there and food going to the other tables looked very impressive. We had ordered a strudel each so I was envious of the other dishes I saw coming out. The service was good and fast and the staff are very friendly. The building is impressive. Would recommend.

Yelp
Prices aren't cheap (6 euros for a tea) and the decor downstairs is surprisingly spartan, but the desserts are really lovely, and head upstairs for the amazing, gorgeous cigar lounge, with extensive spirits list and imaginative cocktails, to enjoy the room where they filmed Inglourious Basterds.

Yelp
I loved the ambiance and the service when I went. There was no music playing, but listening to the other customers carrying on with their whispered discussions and the at-work sounds coming from the bar and kitchen simply made me feel alive. I also loved that the servers did not interrupt our table conversations; somehow, our beverages and food magically appeared in front of us with practically no fuss.

Yelp
I got here at 10 am for breakfast. I ordered a coffee and the food came (which was three pieces of falafel and some cut up fruit) an hour later the coffee was cold. I'm not sure if they are understaffed but it took a while for the server to take our order. The place is overpriced for what the food is. The only thing that I enjoyed was the outside which was nice but there are bees everywhere so if you're allergic I would not sit outside.

Yelp
I really enjoyed this cafe. It's quaint and peaceful. The service is the best we've had in Berlin (or Germany for that matter). Our waitress was very gracious and attentive. Austrians are so elegant and polite. And so are their foods. Breakfast was delicious and same were the coffee drinks. Reminds us of the breakfast we had in Vienna. Everything was done professionally and with heart. Such a lovely place that lets you relax. It was perfect.

Yelp
First time at Cafe Einstein and wowww... really nice place, great service and good food. Went there for breakfast and finished of with a piece of home made cake... suuuuper delicious. Definetly going back there.

Yelp
Yum! My boyfriend and I came here twice during our holiday in Berlin. The first time we visited was during dinner time. We both got the wiener schnitzel and it came with a side of cranberries and potatoes. The potatoes were delicious and so was the schnitzel. The second time we visited was for breakfast and this was the best breakfast I've had in a while. The eggs were cooked to perfection and the fresh orange juice was perfect. The croissants really steal the show. They're flaky, buttery, and so delicious. The butter and jams served alongside the pastries are also delicious.

Yelp
I've been in Germany for three weeks and this is the best espresso, Käse toast, und erdbeerkuchen I've had -- bar none! Highly recommended!! Ich bin in Deutschland seit drei Wochen und hier gibt's der beste Espresso, Käse Toast, und erdbeerkuchen - ohne Ausnahme! Sehr zu empfehlen!

Yelp
I think this place is great for a nice and relaxed chat over lunch/late breakfast. I came here with my mother and we both greatly enjoyed the service and solid standard of food. She ordered a white asparagus soup, I got a lobster bisque and eggs with salmon. We also got green tea and a cappuccino. The food was solid, even considering the moderately high price tag. We came here on a Thursday afternoon and it was fairly empty; no complaints as it allowed for a nice and relaxing conversation setting. The decor is nice and the pastries looked phenomenal. Recommend!

Yelp
Okay okay, the main reason why i wanted to eat here is because they shoot a scene from Inglourious Basterds here! SERIOUSLY no doubt possible, doesn't matter if the food is good or not, NEED to go there! No discussion possible! I. WANT! And! I did! So Einstein it was. So I sat maybe on the chair what is touched by family Pitt, or maybe they even sat in it. I used the toilet used by family Pitt or maybe even by the master himself: Quentin Tarantino!! Whaaaa. Yes family Pitt did actually have had dinner here as well. Okay enough about that? NO! Yes yelp is about food not about some famous family who sat their asses down there. So the food, it was all quite "fancy", if you know what I mean. Like this small plate next to your napkins, for the two types of bread and butter. They have lovely wines, good ones, maybe even better ones. She sphere was awesome and romantic. It was an old house, with a lot of character and stories. If you know what I mean. Choices for me as a vegetarian where okay. Not a lot but there where some. The option I had where actually good ones! I decided to take ravioli with artichokes. It's was quit alright, not as good as I had expected But okay. The quality of the food compares to the costs aren't really in balance, read expensive. But the experience is fun though! We came in a little late so there was no time for deserts, but! That all had a reason, the big bar that situated above this restaurant: Lebensstern. They have the best cocktails in town, and they even where one of the best cocktail bars in the world! WHUT! So that was my desert, a really nice cocktail! Yum.

Yelp
The cutest cafe I have ever been in! I felt like I was in a movie. Such a nice, classy ambiance. I was so happy. It's in a old building and looks so vintage inside and out. Even though it's a chain this one stands out from the rest. It's got an old timey vibe that I really liked and even the newspapers they have for you to read are on big wooden holders. Went for Christmas day brunch and it was just perfect to start off the day. Was really happy it was open on Christmas. Our waitress was really nice and helpful with my choosing of what to order. I noticed most people were getting the tier of goodies for 2, which comes on a cake tier with pastries and sandwiches and such. That looked good but decided on something else, it was bit pricey for me. I wasn't too hungry so I just ordered Wiener Frühstück which is / 2 rolls, butter, jam, 2 eggs in a glass for €5,80. For my beverage I ordered a cafe americano, which I think was about €3/4 and to my surprise they did some latte art on it. A cute little heart, which I loved. Adds a little something extra. My meal was simple but good. The bread was fresh and it filled me up. My boyfriend ordered the Kräuteromelett mit Hürtenkäse, Blattspinat und Zwiebeln which was an Herb omelette with feta cheese, leaf spinach and onions on homemade malt bread and marinated rocket salad. It looked delicious as well. All in all cute little place that I would recommend!

Ramin E.

Yelp
We walked out of this place because no one came to offer anything after 15 minuets of sitting there. At least you could put a glass of water on the table while waiting.
google avatar

Enrico F.

Yelp
Not veg friendly. Very expensive place. An espresso costs twice as much what it costs around Berlin, but I guess people are fine with that. Staff is ok, not particularly kind but not rude either. Have been shocked by the fact that they didn't have soy milk, being such an expensive and 'poshy' place. The clientele is wealthier than the standard (well, we're in ku-damm...), but maybe that's why they charge as much, as I didn't see any value for money.
google avatar

Aliza R.

Yelp
Sweet spot in Berlin, loved the interior and the breakfast was delicious, would happily go back any day!
google avatar

Martin I.

Yelp
Cozy location and great service. They spoke good English and accepted cards. The food was also very good, albeit a bit pricey. A more luxurious breakfast with a few cappucinos ended up costing us 50€ which is definitely not on the cheap side nor was it that excessive to be honest. But considering its history and experience, it was worth going there at least once just for the experience. Their scrambled eggs were delicious and so was their double shot of espresso with homemade vanilla ice cream. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Mehmet Cem Ü.

Yelp
Staff is very friendly, the ambiance is amazing. We had breakfast and it's really nice. The wasabi coleslaw thing was (einstein frustuk) was weird but that's my option. There's no wifi. Staff is fluent in english. Bacon scrambled is also nice.
google avatar

Yelp
Had a great lunch on a cold winter day, the welcome warm, the seating comfortable, the server helpful. And the menu was so interesting, such great choices. Wonderful coffee.

Yelp
Thank you thank you for keeping this institution alive and well! Although the name-sake cafes around town are a total disaster (unless cute baristas are important to you) and the branch on Unter den Linden is a draw for meals in Mitte, THIS original is where the best food is served. The original Einstein simply has THE BEST apple strudel I've ever eaten and that includes tasting them from Prague and Vienna to Budapest. Their matching coffee choices are excellent as well. Go for anything from a hearty club sandwich to the Wiener Schnitzel (ask for the half order which is huge enough!); it's all right there on the breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. In summer, sitting in the back garden is better than a massage for total relaxation. In winter, the stark but real setting makes you realize that, yes, you ARE in Berlin. A stand-out!

Steven S.

Yelp
I would give 20 stars if I could... And If you can only eat in one cafe when visiting Berlin, this is the one that you should do so! Sunday brunch was marvelous!! We had 4 adults and one child , so we ordered cafe, espresso and tea to start. Then the goodies started to arrive. we decided to order 2 - Einstein-Frühstück for 2 Persons for the table to start, it was more then enough for the 5 of us. But the service was what made the experience as great a visit as it was. Our server was a warm and friendly women that anticipated our every need. The food was delicious, the ambiance was equally matching. We will absolutely return to this Grand German eatery when in Berlin again!!!

Yelp
Einstein is one of my two favorite coffee chains in Berlin. I like it because of the strawberry quark, delicious and strong lattes and friendly service. Once the Barista sees that you come in a few times a week, she will give you a stamp card which is extremely helpful for my fellow coffee addicts. After five to seven coffees, depending on the price of the coffees purchased, you can get a free one. My favorite branches of Einstein are this one and the one under Savingplatz S-bahn, because they are not too crowded, close to my apartment and have the friendliest Baristas.. (in my humble opinion)

Carlo C.

Yelp
The place has a lot of atmosphere and is spacious. The table are in general at a good distance, and you can chat freely. It is not noisy. Waiters are wonderful: old style. Service was very cordial and attentive. Food excellent: a great appetizer of tuna fish, huge and tasty wiener schnitzel, great venison. Nice wine list, not overpriced. For water they offer a caraffe, if you like, of tap water, not frequent in the upscale restaurants. One of my preferred Berlin restaurants.
google avatar

Anya R.

Yelp
After reading rave reviews in TimeOut and hearing that Tarantino had spent every day there while filming Inglorious Basterds and even filmed a few scenes there, it was placed on our must-see list for Berlin. And I'm glad it was! This place is completely adorable and authentic. The waiters are very attentive and helpful at choosing from the menu, especially because they speak perfect English. We split a fish appetizer, I had the weiner schnitzel and my boyfriend had a delicious beef dish with an apple sauce like side. We also had specialty cocktails that were delicious (I have included a picture of mine). My only complaint was that it took a while to get our check, but it's better typically that they don't want to rush you out but I was so jetlagged that I was eager to get back to our hotel room.
google avatar

Miss S.

Yelp
Nice interior and also big garden at the back. But service was VERY slow, almost felt being ignored. The wasps didn't help us enjoy the garden so we had to move inside. Food was nice but overpriced I think, otherwise I'd give it 4*!!
google avatar

Hannes H.

Yelp
The cafe is in a house on the ground floor. It has a nice decor, that is however a bit dated. There are large cracks in the walls and on the ceiling. They offer a small selection of German and Austrian dishes as well as sweets. The Apfelstrudel is nice but nothing special. The Topfenstrudel comes with a passion fruit sauce that is very good. The cafe latte is standard, I would rate it as average. Given that 2 pieces of cafe and 2 coffees cost 23 Eur I have to say it is way overpriced. I won't go back. There are plenty of better cafés with better quality coffee and better cake in Berlin.
google avatar

Joe J.

Yelp
We visited both Café Einstein locations multiple times during our trip to Berlin. We loved every bite.

Yelp
Cafe Einstein Stammhaus is arguably a Berlin institution, even making appearances in German literature. This patinated cafe in an art deco villa has been around forever, and is reliable for it's breakfasts and traditional coffee and cake. 1. The Food Great breakfasts, varied and delicious. Their coffee is good and cakes/tortes quite delicious. Lunch and dinner menus are seasonal, but have lots of good options. Traditional German classics such as schnitzel and Kaiserschmarn are always available. 2. The Staff Dressed in black with white shirts. Polite and attentive. 3. The Atmosphere Inviting and laid-back. Great place to do some reading, they have lots of mags and papers. The garden is also a wonderful oasis of calm in summer. 4. The Damage Coffee and a slice of cake/torte go for about 7 euros. Dinner mains are pricier, 12-20 Euros. Varied wine list, also by the glass. 5. Useful Tidbits Go to idle and read.

The M.

Yelp
The best Schnitzel (Veal) in town. Period. The Schnitzel has the best crust and the meat is most of the time to the point. Enjoy their foamy cappucino in their back yard in the summer or sit inside to get the feel of a old berlin coffee house in the old style like in Vienna. waiters are attentive and with class. If you have never visited definitely worth checking out. The place can be quite packed so try to go during off hours.
google avatar

R T.

Yelp
Any restaurant with high ceilings usually gets a downgrade in my mind. I think it makes the place not as cosy and there's normally a cafeteria- or convention-hall-like echo/atmosphere. Having said that, this art nouveau cafe is a wonderful place for breakfast. I love their black teas and coffee, and the way they present their food. I've always wanted to go back to try their cakes.
google avatar

Saladin S.

Yelp
Great cuisine, excellent value for money, if you are looking for the real deal in German food come here. Service is very friendly, excellent recommendations and high attention to detail. Try the Schnitzel or the Tafelspitz. Also seasonal and regional fish is one of a kind for the price. Not to mention the coffee. Own roasters and fine finishing. Highly recommend overall. Try it
google avatar

Droim C.

Yelp
Been there for breakfast and had a nice time enjoying the ancient villa-style interior. No kitsch here. Besides that it's a place with it's own part in Berlin's history. The breakfast menu was sufficiently extensive and the coffee was made to perfection, just as you would expect of a place in that price range. The food itself was delicious and a little old-fashioned (as in classic Vienna coffee house style) and is unlike the artesian, organic-style you encounter in one of the modern "hipster" coffee shops in Berlin. In my opinion, all the kitchen is lacking here, may be a little creativity or "surprise-moment".
google avatar

Lolo L.

Yelp
I miss this place (this review is based on experiences from 1980 to 1984). Café Einstein was one of my favorite hangouts in Berlin, especially with friends on a Sunday morning or afternoon. I wonder whether they still have those classic newspapers on big wooden sticks, or whether the death of newsprint is too far along for that anymore. Anyway, this was a good place to kill time, drinking coffee and writing, in graceful surroundings. Yelp is asking whether they feature TV here, and I sincerely hope not. They didn't back when I was here.

Food Jerk X.

Yelp
Authentic Viennese cafe, right down to having to wait 20 minutes for your check after you ask for it. But other than that, the service was great, and so was the food. The small schnitzel is big enough. Also: if taking the U-bahn from Mitte, it's best to take a cab or approach the restaurant from one stop further west. I'm sorry to say that the Kurfurstenstrasse stop leads you to walk right by, er, "ladies of the night." Not what I wanted my kid to see.

Yelp
A waste of time and money, unfriendly service, unimpressive food. The service team seem to think they're far more important than the guests. Only disappointing.

Joanna P.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere, the garden is very cute. Good place for a good Sunday breakfast. It all tastes good but I only wished the were a little more flexible with the orders, it wasn't possible to make small changes.
google avatar

Isaac M.

Yelp
Don't know why this place has such a high rating. Sure the location and decoration is "fancy" but the food is really ordinary and the worst part is their arrogant and rude service.
google avatar

James R.

Yelp
the other cafe einsteins in berlin are, true to their nature, just generic chain coffeeshops. This, the original, is a charming place to spend an afternoon in the garden or the beautiful old mansion that is the restaurant.

Emily B.

Yelp
beautiful dinner in the garden here last night. great house wine, delicious fresh pasta and the opportunity to disassemble a giant artichoke. great setting, great service and a friendly place for both locals and tourists.

Yelp
Great Place. Always amazing. This is my third visit to Cafe. It is in a great old villa with very interesting history. The food is traditional, great. If you feel like you're in Vienna. The staff is outstanding. The staff is no attitude, prices are great. Foodgrade my favorite restaurant in Berlin
