South Africa 🇿🇦 Mossel Bay.
This restaurant is part of a Marriott hotel property. The space is large and nicely designed, with a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere. In the evenings, it’s best to book in advance, as there aren’t many good dining options in this town and the restaurant fills up quickly.
FOOD:
The restaurant focuses on seafood, but also offers sushi, along with a few meat and vegetarian options. We visited as a group and ordered their seafood platter, which included mussels, breaded calamari, oysters, grilled fish, prawns and lobster, with vegetables and rice as sides.
The oysters were a true discovery. They serve wild-caught oysters, not farmed ones, and the difference is remarkable. Creamy, dense, and deeply oceanic, with a rich, briny flavor — unlike anything we’ve had elsewhere. Highly recommended and easily the highlight of the meal.
The prawns and lobster had an incredibly tender texture, literally melting in the mouth and separating easily from the shell. We assume this exceptional texture may be seasonal, related to molting, but regardless, the freshness was outstanding.
The fish, however, was overcooked and didn’t stand out compared to the other seafood. The mussels were fresh and well prepared, with a pleasant sweet and marine flavor, without any muddiness.
Among the sides, the vegetables were enjoyable, but the rice was overcooked and seasoned with cumin, which unfortunately made it even less appealing.
SERVICE:
Service was average. At one point, the waitress accidentally spilled oil on our table, and some drops got on our clothes. The table itself was quite small for four people, and despite the incident, we were not offered to move to another table, which was disappointing.
VERDICT:
One of the best restaurants in Mossel Bay if you’re looking for good food paired with a pleasant atmosphere. The seafood — especially the oysters — was excellent, and we were so impressed that we came back again on our return trip just for them. Despite some service and side-dish issues, the quality of the seafood makes this place worth visiting.
