8 Viennese Coffeehouses for Any Trip to Austria

"Away from the city center on a quiet corner, you’ll find Oriental rugs, black marble tables, Art Nouveau wood-paneled walls and snug green velvet booths. Jugendstil mirrors and brass light fixtures enhance the fin de siècle flair at Café Goldegg . “This is a traditional Old Viennese coffeehouse with so much history,” owner Jutta Scheuch tells me on a buzzing Sunday morning. “It’s in the original wood ceiling covered in years of smoke.” Drawing a mix of ages from neighborhood folks (including a dog or two) along with European tourists, Goldegg feels delightfully upbeat. That’s thanks to Scheuch, who warmly welcomes patrons every day to her 1910 Kaffeehaus. “I love my guests,” she says. You can play pool, read an array of newspapers, or just eat, drink and be merry. Although many coffeehouses serve Vienna’s signature Sachertorte (invented at the Hotel Sacher), Goldegg’s takes the cake — moist, rich, and gorgeously presented with chocolate-drizzled whipped cream." - Veronica Stoddart

What a gem. This true Viennese cafe has Wonderful food, service and atmosphere without the expensive prices you can find at other cafes. Viennese people go there for breakfast and more and if you are lucky you can find a cost spot between the regulars. The owners welcome you , it's near a beautiful church with surrounded by greenery where you can chill later and all this close to the Belvedere. Very very nice. Thank you.

We were passing by Austria and decided to try some desserts and drinks. Their desserts were pretty good, and the soup was a traditional Austrian soup, which is refreshing and savoury. I like their interior and the atmosphere in the cafe. The staff members welcomed us graciously. However, a waitress with black hair asked for a tip at the end of the payment, which was a little surprising because, in my opinion, giving tips should be more voluntary and less of a request.

Google
Such a lovely venue. Outdoor terrace seating is very modern and on a quiet street looking at a pretty church. The inside interior is very well preserved and still obtains a charming nostalgic look and feel. Quite a local place as well but I also felt very welcome as a tourist. The foods are nice. We didn’t come for breakfast but the traditional menu is quite sufficient too. The Sachertorte is delicious and the coffee is good.

A hidden gem with old-world charm! This historic café, offers a beautiful Art Nouveau interior. The atmosphere is warm and authentic, with friendly staff who make you feel genuinely welcome. The menu is unpretentious and affordable, featuring Viennese classics. Perfect spot for breakfast or a quiet afternoon. Highly recommended for those who appreciate tradition, good service, and a relaxed vibe.

Google
This was definitely one of the best Viennese cafes I've ever been, and most certainly the one which has the friendliest waitor!! Excellent atmosphere, interior design, extensive menu and reasonable prices! Everything we had was delicious! And the middle aged waitor with glasses was lovely and no doubt the most friendly waitor in Vienna!!

Google
Probably my favourite restaurant in Vienna. The restaurant lived up to the reviews. At first the service was a lil shaky, but it got better. The food was amazing. Service was good . Atmosphere felt authentic, busy and decor was really cute. We ordered more than we needed. The price was also good. This is better than cafe central. Will definitely like to go back.

I went to Cafe Goldegg a couple of times during my time in Vienna. It has a lovely old-world charm inside, and outside tables are great too. The staff were helpful and friendly and the food good.

Google
Feels like a time warp to a more sophisticated era, if I lived here it might become a favourite meeting spot. The food was good but not outstanding, I really wish this trend of serving food on slates would go away.

Yelp
Tasty Viennese food and reliable service. Old Vienna atmosphere. Charming layout. Good breakfast choices as well.

Yelp
Quick service and good food for the money. Nice atmosphere after a lot of walking around Belvedere.

Yelp
The Apple Strudel was AMAZING. Make sure you get it with cream. The service was good and friendly.

Yelp
Cafe Goldegg was one of our first stops in Vienna. It's easy access to one of the Christmas markets so we filled up before walking over. The coffee was great and the food was delicious. I had never had schnitzel before but was similar to a thin chicken tender in my opinion, I was kind of surprised it didn't come with a sauce so I used ketchup (don't judge my American self lol). The bacon was almost like ham with crispy edges, very good. We were greeted by the owner I believe -- who is fabulous and so nice. Our waiter was friendly and efficient. He spoke some English too which was helpful for us. This would be a great place to enjoy a coffee and pastry or eat a full meal. This place was an esthetic, cute little cafe with fast and friendly service.

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches. Cafe Goldegg was originally constructed in 1910 and refurbished in the late 1980s. The decor features green booths and wood paneling. We visited on a Tuesday afternoon, and the cafe was about half full. I tried the multi kulti veggie. My sandwich was massive, but I savored every bite. Overall, I would recommend Cafe Goldegg for lunch in Vienna.

Yelp
We stopped here after getting in on the train and wanted to grab a coffee and quick bite before starting our day. We were sat down immediately which was nice. I loved reading about the history of the cafe on the menu and and how it was restored to its original purpose in the late 80's. I ordered a latte and croissant and my fiance ordered a coffee and one of their breakfast items. He loved what he ordered! The staff spoke English which was so helpful because neither of us speak much German. The menu had English as well. This was a great first stop to start our day. The rest of the menu looked really good, I wish we had been in Vienna long enough to come back and come for lunch. Also a note of cultural differences for Americans visiting: 1. is when you are done, you need to ask for the check. Here, you walked up to the counter to pay instead of doing it at your table. 2. check what tipping norms are, I think we were told traditional tipping is around 10% 3. when you finish your water, you need to ask for more water, they do not have someone you walks around filling waters. Overall, I recommend for anyone visiting to check this place out!

Yelp
Service was good. Food was decent but was over-seasoned. It was quite expensive (€20) given I ordered only a sandwich and sparkling water.

Yelp
I loved my experience here! The service was very nice, the food was good, and the ambience was great! I met the owner and she is absolutely charming!

Yelp
Absolute gem of a place. Not far from a team station and just 10 min walk from Belvedere Palace. Our waitress was kind and the food was spectacular. I got the Business breakfast (which was smoked cheese + ham + egg + spring lettuce + sliced boil egg and tomatoes ) and my bf got a lovely spread.

Jenn S.

Yelp
Stopped in for cake and coffee after Belvedere. They were quick and building unique.

Yelp
Wonderful historic cafe near the train station. Not touristy when I visited. The menu is all in German. I had a full English breakfast, which included juice and coffee. It was a solid and satisfying dish. The ambiance is very special and it feels like you're in a bygone era.

Yelp
Small intimate, services friendly not a very extended breakfast menu but well prepared.

Yelp
A hidden gem. The food was fire and there were actually locals there. The service was great and warm and the food was affordable. Everything was delicious and there is an expansive menu. Would definitely go again.

Yelp
We came in for a late lunch on a hot day. The waitstaff was friendly and made us feel at home, although they did let us tourists know that the bill did not include a service charge (which they certainly earned and we we were glad to provide via a generous tip). The food exceeded my expectations for a coffeehouse, prepared with fresh ingredients, and my whole family enjoyed the meal.

Yelp
I enjoyed my breakfast here, on a cold winter's morning. We got the Goldegg Special each, a tomato soup, hot chocolate, and fruit salad. The Goldegg Special has salami, salad, boiled egg, bread, butter, jam, ham, and orange juice. I liked everything within as it was generally of good quality, but the reason why this place does not score 4 stars is because there isn't much cooking involved here, as what I had mostly involved assembly. My fruit salad was quite yummy, but slightly too sweet for my liking. I liked my beverages, and would come back. My favorite part of the meal was the choose-two-rolls from the bread basket, and all the breads had great crusts - kudos to their baker/supplier. Yum!

Yelp
Excellent food, even better desserts. We had the schnitzel and some paninis, all were excellent. Of course, we followed with desserts and melange. Desserts were the chocolate torte, poppyseed cake, cheese strudel and apricot kuche. All were even better than the meal. Highly recommend when in Wien. It's close to Schloss Belvedere - a great place to go after.

Yelp
A nice beginning to our visit to Vienna. The photos reflect the cafe's charming ambiance. We had excellent espresso and breakfasts. We chose the bread with three toppings all of which were excellent. Our son and daughter-in-law had a very nice breakfast sandwich. We finished with a somewhat disappointing Sachertorte. The waitstaff was very accommodating given that we still had our roller bags and carry ons with us having come right from the train station.

Yelp
Excellent soup, kind prices and great customer service. 18€ for two soups, 0.5L beer and a glass of white wine. Tomate/olive soup recommended.

Yelp
Atmospheric decor, friendly staff, and very good coffee and cake! Definitely recommended if you're visiting Schloß Belvedere.

Yelp
I liked it! The place was recommended to me. I didn't have high expectations as in this part of town you wouldn't expect to find something special. But it was! It's authentic and original. Food was good, coffee was great. Interior is very authentic, almost quaint (check out the smoker's room!). Prices were fair. And, compared to the normal unfriendly cafe houses downtown, the staff was very considerate and friendly. I guess I will have coffee here more often instead of the crowded Museum, Schwarzenberg or Central or whatever they are called. Definitely a recommender!

Yelp
Disappointed after reading a lot of the good reviews for this place. I had a panini which was decent but a very small portion and way overpriced. Not a good value here.

Yelp
Definitely worth a visit! Not that many tourists. We had a panini, großer brauner and vanilla cake, all was great! Exceptional service. A very cost old school place where you can get warm during the winter and spend a lovely time. Definitely recommended!

Yelp
Mediocre. I ordered the business breakfast, which was a sandwich with ham, cheese, and egg accompanied by a hot drink and fresh orange juice. The sandwich was cold and contained a small portion of cold cuts and a sliver of hard boiled egg. The bread was old and saturated in pesto. Coffee weak. Orange juice good, but only about 60 ml. Service was good.
