Great Restaurant with a Lovely Atmosphere and Excellent Service We had a wonderful time at this restaurant during the day! The ambience is very inviting, stylish, and cozy. We were particularly impressed by the large selection on the menu, offering something for every taste. The atmosphere was pleasant and relaxed, making it the perfect place to enjoy a meal with friends or family. A special highlight is the winter garden, which is not only beautifully designed but also heated in winter – perfect for smokers who still want to feel comfortable. The service was attentive, friendly, and professional. We felt completely at ease and will definitely be coming back! Highly recommended!

⭐️⭐️☆☆☆ Café Hauptwache 📍 Frankfurt, Germany Came here on a recommendation, so we had fairly high expectations—but unfortunately, it was a disappointing visit. The kitchen was under renovation, which severely limited the breakfast menu. This wasn’t mentioned upfront; we only found out when the waitress came to take our order, which felt like poor communication. We ended up with an omelette that was both bland and visually unappealing—something that looked like it was thrown together without much care, almost like a child made it. Perhaps this place has better days when the kitchen is fully operational, but based on this experience, I wouldn’t rush back. .

I stopped for a beer in the outdoor terrasse. Good cold beer, excellent location, nice old building in a neighborhood in full expansion with construction and renovation going on everywhere. The menu looks well balanced with local cuisine offerings. I will definitively come back when time allows to try the local fares.

Food was good but the service was really, really bad. Waitress was rude, very inattentive. I asked for a Diet Pepsi, she nodded, and walked by me 5 times before I had to ask again. She’s walked by another 5 times now and still no Pepsi. Meal is just about done. I don’t even want to think about how long the check will take. I travel a lot and this is the worst service I have ever had in Europe. Plenty of other good places around to waste my time coming back here again.

Cafe Hauptwache delivers an exceptional dining experience, blending exquisite flavors with a welcoming atmosphere. Located in a vibrant area, the restaurant’s chic decor and cozy lighting create the perfect ambiance for a memorable meal. The menu is thoughtfully curated, offering a variety of options to satisfy diverse tastes. I indulged in the breakfast menu where I chose fried eggs, which was cooked to perfection, showcasing the chef’s attention to detail. The freshness of the ingredients was evident, and each bite was bursting with flavor. Service at Cafe Hauptwache is impeccable. The staff are attentive and knowledgeable, providing excellent recommendations and ensuring a seamless experience. Despite the restaurant being busy, our orders were served promptly, and the staff checked in just the right amount to ensure everything was to our liking. Pricing is reasonable for the quality and presentation of the dishes, making it a great value for special occasions or a treat-yourself evening. Overall, [Restaurant Name] combines culinary excellence with outstanding service. It’s a place I’ll eagerly return to and recommend to anyone looking for an unforgettable meal.

The only thing worse than the substandard food is the exceptionally poor service. This place survives purely on its location, so if you want to rest your legs and have a glass of local white wine (restricted to 2-3), then this is the place for it. That’s a view of the stale cold and tasteless sauerkraut that I dared try here.

Came here for a light lunch while visiting the Christmas Markets. The building is very interesting from the exterior but once inside, it looses all of its historical charm. Loud party music was planning which was odd for the setting. We were given a table right away, but then service was slow and it was difficult to get our waiters attention. Thus said, the food was really good!! I would love to eat these dishes again, but in a different location.

Google
The owner was very rude. After waiting 20-30 min to have someone come to the table to take our order we hesitated briefly and she left the table for another 10 min because we took too long. Once we made our order she made us pay immediately before we were even served our beer. She dropped a schnitzel on the way to our table to serve us and told us that it was for the rats. Food wasn’t horrible but we did want a second beer and desert. When we asked about it she said “maybe you could get one at the train station. Insinuating we could hang out with the homeless at the subway.” The dinner ended with her turning the lights out and leaving her rag water bucket on our table until we left. Hope others have a better experience than we did.

Yelp
This cafe is situated in an amazing location. They have indoor and outdoor seatings. They have a large bar area inside the restaurant. Servers were busy but efficient and unfortunately not all of them speak English (cue to learn Germans!!). Ordered chicken schnitzel and some bread. Food was okay and not too expensive.

Yelp
They were busy, I get it. And maybe this place is a better Brunch spot ‍. So the service being slow wasn't a super big deal and it was NFL weekend here so Frankfurt was busier than usual but that doesn't explain why the pork knuckle was tougher than a wet old leather shoe. Now I did my research before flying over here from Atlanta and as I understand it the pork knuckle is supposed to be fall off the bone tender and this was anything but. So avoid it here, I can't recommend it. The beer though was very good...I ordered a Hefe...one of my favorite types of beers in the states other than IPAs. The beer carried this place (5 stars) but the Pork Knuckle is dead weight (0 stars), hence the three stars overall. This place is conveniently located at the Hauptwache station which is very central, so it has that going for it. Final thoughts... Beer - Excellent Pork Knuckle - tough, tasteless...avoid Service - slow

Yelp
Was an experience. Had the green sauce for the first time. Very herbal and fresh flavor. May pair well with bratwurst!

Yelp
Came here for late lunch during COVID. Food (2.5 stars): I ordered: freshly squeezed orange juice (3,90€) 5 stars - came in a wine glass, pretty sure it was more than 200ml as advertised. Homemade green sauce (12,80€) - green sauce with 4 half organic eggs & boiled potatoes. (1 stars) - I just did not like it, the sauce was sour and the 2 eggs and boiled potatoes were just that, nothing special. Ambiance (4 stars): This is a great place for people watching (when it is not covid times) and they have heaters for when the weather is cooler underneath the balcony. The place is located at the main square. (the city is not really big so you can walk to most other areas within 10 minutes in the main city. They have free wifi

Yelp
Can't beat the location, the building, the ambience. Comfortable coffee house and restaurant. Great service. and the food was good at reasonable prices. Loved the bread and sauces brought to you. No pressure when sitting and listening to the bells in the Church were Goerte was baptized. Very enjoyable time.

Yelp
Five star location. Three star service. Less for everything else. It is strange that a glass of Apfelwein in the center of Frankfurt costs as much as a bottle in Boston. I understand premium pricing at premium locations, but this place would be so much nicer if locals would frequent it. The somewhat positive: If you ask, you'll get a 2 hour WiFi pass free of charge, but be prepared that establishing a connection is not for the faint of heart. When I connected, my Mac popped up its usual connection menu. This didn't work at all. Eventually, I figured out that I had to turn off my VPN, connect, open Safari (Chrome didn't work in the connection phase), and then go through the connection menu. Scrolling down was necessary to see all entries.

Yelp
Definitely nothing good or special, The food was ok but the wait was forever, the place was barely empty and they took forever to bring our food we almost ready to cancel our food, and the server not attentive at all and besides the bad experience she ask for tip, (really) we don't mind the tip at all but when they give you bad service and bad food. Wow

Yelp
Reasonably priced german food. Menu is a little small but it is a a cafe rather than a restaurant. Menus are available in english and german. There's a tented / heated outside seating area. Be warned though there is smoking in this area. Inside is nice enough and I'd go that way myself. I got the sachsenhausen schneegestober ( camembert and cream cheese dip with a soft pretzel.) it was nice and I liked it although I have to say we all though it was heavy snow definitely for sharing. It also had herbs / spices through it. I'd say get some extra bread and share a portion between 3-4 people. My girlfriend and I had schnitzel with a jaeger sauce ( mushroom sauce) and fries. It was pretty good ok german food but I'd add the jaeger sauce as otherwise I'd say its just an average schnitzel at best. The fries weren't great and I'd recommend you substitute then for something else. The sweet potato fries looked a lot better. My friends weren't that hungry so only ended up getting a potato soup, one with sausage and the other without. I managed to sneak a taste and it was decent and a nice starter although I would probably go without the sausage in it. The outside of the building is fantastic and have to say that the toilets are very clean although I didn't like the fact they had a woman sitting downstairs and you feel obligated to leave her a tip for using the bathroom. (A lot of places are like this in busy german cities though.)

Yelp
Great location in the heart of the shopping area. We were looking for our first meal in the city and stopped here. It's a beautiful building with a rich history. We sat outside and enjoyed the spring air. We ate pork/sausage sampler that was decent. The apple wine was ok but it was my first experience.

Yelp
Cafe Hauptwache is located right in the heart of Frankfurt. It is in a large, old building that is very charming. You can eat inside or out and during the winter they have blankets and heaters for the people who choose to sit outdoors. Upon entering the restaurant it has plenty of seating but the interior is quite outdated. Could use a facelift for sure. The service is ok, the wait staff is a bit slow in noticing customers but they are friendly. I have eaten Flammkuchen, Spaghetti Bolognese, and a Bratwurst plate here. The Flammkuchen was delicious. Very crisp and tasty. The spaghetti is delicious and they give you a huge portion for 10€. (Would be nice to offer parmesan cheese on the side though). The Bratwurst plate, which had Sauerkraut and mashed potatoes was delicious. The Bratwurst was so good and packed with flavor. I love the Sauerkraut as well. The plate was only 10 euros which was great. Definitely worth the price. They offer a wide range of wines, beer, and specialty drinks. The hot cocoa looked delicious, definitely need to try that one day. Overall, it's a nice place to enjoy lunch with friends and family. Very nice staff, great location and delicious food.

Yelp
Location: Cant be any more central, as it's directly at the Hauptwache in the inner city. Also this place looks from the inside like a mix of romantic, nostalgic and hipp. Service: The service was as expected. Friendly and also fast. Nothing to complain about. Isnt this a crazy category? When you do everything fine, it's just okay, but any faults make it bad. Food quality: Good food quality, everything was fresh and tasty. But there haven't been any complex and difficult dishes. The beauty was more in a simplicity then in extraordinarity. But good ideas if you want to cook something simple yourself. Prices: Good location and fresh food is okay, but still the prices are just too high. Cant really recommend it, as it's just to expensive and you get similar things for less money. I dont drink wine, but 10 Euro for a glass still got me tinking while reading the menue. Go there if: some else is paying

Yelp
This was was okay. Typical outdoor retardant with high prices because it is in the city's center. My girlfriend had the potato soup which tasted like seawater, tooooo much salt. I had the sausage (which is really a long hotdog) and their potatoe salad was was the best part of the meal. Overall, I wouldn't go back. Price is too high for the amount and quality of food.

Yelp
Location certainly helps bring a lot of business to this restaurant. Fabulous building, great ambience no matter sitting inside or outside, nice 2nd floor for larger group. I think their food is at average level, however their hot chocolate with variety of alcohol choices is must to try!

Yelp
We went there two days ago with friends (a couple) and we had various types of coffee, plus we shared an order of handkas (a cheese dish) & an order of grune sauce mit eier (green sauce with eggs [I don't know how to use the German punctuation]). Everything was delicious, our server was a very friendly young woman, and we were able to linger for quite awhile.

Yelp
One of my favorite cafés in Frankfurt because of the great location, affordable prices and nice german food! Also huge variety of cakes if you just want to come for coffee or tea in the afternoon!

Yelp
Kaffe was good, schnitzel was cooked perfectly and the best part was desert. The "warm chocolate melting cake" (as the English menu called it) was chocolate lava cake ( as we USA call it) was the BEST that I have ever had!!! They have a complete menu translated in English and some I the staff speak good English. Not a fan of our server but another took care of us the rest of the time, so she made us happy. Definitely going back for the desert again!

Yelp
A good cappuccino, central location, beautiful old house vibe, and lots of outdoor seating and blankets.

Yelp
Tried this place while in Frankfurt not the best order a soup which was a bit high on salt and taste a bit bland. My boyfriend ordered the sausages with potato salad was that great either pretty small portion.

Yelp
Way better than a few German restaurants that I have tried. Recommend Frankfurt Plate for tourists

Yelp
Hauptwache is a restaurant/historical building in the middle of a little market area. Not too far from the Hauptbahnhof it is a cool place to have a Schofferhoffer, Henninger, or Becks beer and have lunch. Staff is friendly and kind of knows English which will help some travelers. Food is tasty and I enjoyed the Veal Schnitzel with chips. A must stop if going to Frankfurt am Main.

Yelp
In the center of the city next to great shopping, this restaurant is a former guard house with a long history as a cafe. The cafe sits in a plaza adjacent to St. Catherine's Church is a fun place to take a break from shopping and site seeing, and get a traditional Frankfurt lunch.
google avatar

Yelp
Great spot to get some cold German beer. I like the inside because it is quiet and able to see the outside. A good place for a couple to take a shopping break : ) As for drink, more German beers.

Gayle G.

Yelp
Have eaten here on two different visits to Frankfurt. I try not to repeat restaurants but I made an exception for this place. Conveniently located and great atmosphere. The schnitzel with green sauce, fries and waffles are all excellent. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Great place for a quick bite or some coffee and sightseeing! Sit on the patio and enjoy the view...take it all in!
