I really want to love Cafe Johannes. I’ve tried to love it three times. And I’m just not sure how many more I can try.
Let’s start with this: the quality, price, and taste are incredible. The baked goods are out of this world and the breakfast foods are fresh and delicious.
However… the cafe is a bit chaotic. They’re a takeout cafe, a sit down restaurant, and hotel all in one. So it seems a bit overwhelming. When you walk in you’re unsure where to order as there’s no clear order point and you’re greeted by the coffee machine and row of cookies. Twice I’ve gone in, asked if I could sit outside and if I needed to order inside, to be told someone would come take my order… to then wait over 20 minutes before going back in, trying to order, and be told someone would come outside. Twice. The second time no one came so after thirty minutes I left. I had a book, so I didn’t totally mind, but it was disappointing. The one time we tried to eat inside the ordering and timing seemed very disjointed. Some tables that arrived after us got their drinks and food before we’d gotten our drinks, and we had to ask multiple times for our coffees (around 25 minutes of waiting for drinks after ordering). It appeared they were prioritizing the hotel as food and drinks kept disappearing to the hotel rooms in the back.
They seem to have ample staff, and the staff are all friendly, but it just seems logistically something needs to be worked out a bit more.
Order the pistachio cookie, the blondies, the egg salad sandwich (insanely good) and the onion tosti (best thing I’ve eaten in a long time). But be prepared to wait.
