I'm writing this assuming anybody interested is an American on vacation. Anyway...
This is the best breakfast (best meal, really) I had in Amsterdam in my short time there. Everybody makes a big deal about the "Dutch pancakes" at the restaurants along the canals but personally the last thing I want is a gigantic pancake (sweet or savory) before spending the entire day walking around as a tourist. The food here is filling without being overly heavy and didn't feel unreasonably priced like one might find in the more touristy areas on the south side of the Ij.
We had the "Egg with Bread" and the Shakshouka (which also comes with bread) and they were both delicious. The Shakshouka was by no means authentic but it was unique. The sauce and eggs were perfect and the whole thing was loaded with greens and eggplant. The Egg with Bread is exactly what it sounds like, fried eggs on a thick slice of bread with melted cheese and chives. Very simple, perfectly cooked with high quality ingredients. We also had the mint and ginger teas which are both house made (i.e. no teabags) and were served dangerously hot (think McDonald's lawsuit hot) which is exactly how I like it.
We actually went there for breakfast twice. On the second, two days after the first, the staff recognized us and the chef came out to apologize for forgetting the eggplant in the Shakshouka and made sure to add extra.
Well worth the short trip away from the city center.
