"Three years ago I was driving up to the Benedictine hermitage where I've been regularly staying for 29 years, high above the radiantly unspoiled Big Sur coastline in California."

I came here during my visit to Big Sur and it is a MUST. I saw somebody mention their cappuccino wasn’t good and I disagree. I thoroughly enjoyed my americano that I got and the breakfast burrito was massive and very good. You will not be disappointed if you come here!

Yana T

Google
Maybe the worst cappuccino I have ever had. I feel like you have to try to make it that bad. The views are great though which is why most people come here but you can get good views anywhere in Big Sur. I don’t think this place is worth it by any means.

John Marvin

Google
OMG, a must stop at Big Sur, probably the nicest dining atmosphere I’ve ever come across my last 50 years Family ❤️ run attention to detail beautiful beautiful food

Kristina Pandozzi

Google
What a treat! We randomly pulled over while driving Big Sur and stopped here. We both ordered sandwiches. When we saw giant, fresh vibrant salads going out we immediately wished we'd ordered those and were more than delighted to discover the fabulous sandwiches also came with salads. Nice view.

Allison Clark

Google
atmosphere is absolutely 5/5 stars. beautiful!!!!! sat here for hours & chatted & played card games with friends. staff seemed to be moving fast as it was quite busy, but it resulted in burnt-tasting espresso shots for all of us. none of us would reorder coffee, it was poor quality, and extremely pricy for what we received. but the view was just lovely!!

Alan Varghese

Google
Amazing views and reasonably good food with no wait time, unlike the famous Nepenthe upstairs. The views are actually pretty similar so it is a decent compromise, as you only lose the number of food and drink options for the 30-45 minute wait time. All the sandwiches are decently sized and come with a salad which is quite nice. They also have nice muffins, cookies, a breakfast menu and friendly staff. The restroom is downstairs in the gift shop.

Google
Victor working the counter at Cafe Kevah was holding it down! Exceptional customer service. He was able to fulfill the orders of a long line of customers 30 minutes before closing while simultaneously fielding all the questions of people who didn’t know the cafe was closing/weren’t happy about the Nepenthe wait times/wanted other restaurant recommendations. I have never seen someone so capable of staying friendly, warm, and polite no matter the tone of the people speaking to him. Idk what they’re paying him now, but he needs a raise just for what I saw him handle last Saturday. The GOAT Also the food & views were delish! You’re paying for the views and the customer service here at Nepenthe/Cafe Kevah, so it’s okay that the food was less interesting and expensive (imo).

Google
This place is truly beautiful. If you want to get a good seat you better come early. We arrived just before they opened and managed to snag a great table with a view, but within 20 minutes the place was full. The food is great and if you are lucky enough to get one of their cinnamon rolls, you will be delighted! They are freshly baked on site and so delicious!

Sophia C.

Yelp
You can't top the ambiance, it's like your dinning in the clouds. Small menu but quality food and service. Worth making a stop on HWY 1!

Kealy C.

Yelp
View makes it worth it! So incredibly beautiful! Feels like the most amazing breath of fresh air. I had the cobb salad and it was just okay, but did the job. Friends and family had wine and beer...it looked very refreshing. If you are looking for a beautiful picture...Cafe Kevah is the place to go!

Teagan T.

Yelp
Kevah has some fantastic panoramic views of the coast, plenty of seating on their broad patio. You order at the hut and go sit then wait for your food. Refillable coffee and free cold water, stirrers, cream & sugar.. If you're hungry from a day of dragging your boots up a mountain, their breakfast burrito will soothe that hunger. It's substantial and solid. The caprese sandwich was on an adorable little baguette cut in half but being perfectly honest requires a bit of jaw strength. Not quite Hercules but maybe a little Jean-Claude Van Damme. Salad on the side tossed in moderate dressing. Scrambled eggs cooked to fluff and little bunches of grapes for those of us who never buys them from the store, these were a pleasant fleshy surprise. Fine coffee with fantastic people watching. Keep in mind the sun will be in your eyes in the morning, so bring your shades or sit smart.

Yelp
Cute outdoor cafe! We heard about this place on Instagram and finally made the trip out. The weather didn't want to cooperate at first as there was heavy fog, but it eventually started to burn off. Still, we weren't able to fully enjoy the views, but the experience was still worth the drive out! Plenty of seating (all outdoor) with trees and umbrellas for sunnier days. Service was friendly and food took ~15-20 mins to come out. What we ordered: Hot chocolate: pretty standard, nothing super special but definitely warmed me up Breakfast burrito: soo good! Came out super hot and flavorful. Pretty filling and was able to share the other half with husband French toast: husband ordered this; had a slight "pumpkin"/fall spice flavor to it..was not a huge fan Blueberry muffin: yummy! Was not expecting to like it as much as I did, and wish we ordered another one There is an onsite parking lot. It was pretty empty when we arrived (around 10:15 AM on a Saturday) but filled up by the time we left. Will definitely stop by again whenever we're in the area!

Maya D.

Yelp
You cannot beat a tasty breakfast with a view!!!! Our family & friends stopped here to grab a bite on our way to Monterrey Bay. It was earlier in the day and we had no problem parking in the lot. You order at the counter and seating is first come first serve. Beautiful views from here! It's almost like having breakfast in treehouse the way it's laid out. I will definitely visit again when I'm back in the area.

Lori H.

Yelp
10 star views and meh food. We wanted to try Nepenthe, but they weren't open and fortunately Cafe Kevah was open at 9am so we got brunch here. They have a stunning 180 degree patio with views of the redwoods and water - a great stop along Route 1. There wasn't much of a wait around 9:30 on a Sunday and we got a table with a view, but it started to fill up as we were leaving. The food and drinks are average diner quality which came out reasonably fast, and they do have unlimited coffee. We ordered eggs Benedict, the breakfast burrito, a mimosa and Bloody Mary which were all passable but you're here for the views.

Kathy N.

Yelp
My friend and I stopped by here after visiting McWay Falls. We arrived around 9:30am and this place was open an hour before the phoenix store and I believe the restaurant opens at 11:30. It was kind of empty when we arrived but people started to show up around half an hour later. Everything was so quick, from taking orders to getting our food. Staff were super kind and friendly. The view was beautiful but the food was simply okay. The potatoes were crispy and perfect but simply tasted plain. I liked the cheese that came with the eggs and the bacon was crispy.

David G.

Yelp
Beautiful scenery! This is a great spot to enjoy a meal outdoors. The service was excellent, and the food was enjoyable. There is also a restaurant just a few steps away. I highly recommend visiting here and then exploring the Henry Miller Memorial Library, which is only two minutes away. I will definitely return!

Eric M.

Yelp
Cafe Kevah, located at Nepenthe is a must-stop for anyone traveling through and enjoying Big Sur and all California Highway 1 has to offer! Yes. It tends to be pretty busy. Yes it's a little pricey. Yes the parking can be annoying (note just park a little ways down the road). But it's very much worth it just to enjoy a I think, one of the top 5 or top 10 dining views in the entire world. We came by and went to the Cafe Kevah (and the gift shop for fun) and enjoyed a bottle of champagne and grilled cheese sandwich with a side salad included. The grilled cheese and salad were fine. Met expectations. If you are expecting some sort of Michelin star restaurant with hippie servers and flowing fountains of red wine, yes you'll be disappointed. If you're expecting one of the best dining spots in the entire world with solid food at a reasonable price for the location, you'll be A-OK. I highly recommend avoiding even trying to park in the parking lot at the venue and instead just find something along the road. People get really flustered and pissy up in the lot and it's not even worth bothering with. Cheers!

Iris T.

Yelp
Food is a little pricey but the views are immaculate. Perfect spot to sip on a coffee while having an amazing view of Big Sur

Kristy D.

Yelp
I ordered the Classic Reuben sandwich (without cheese because of lactose intolerance). It's one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. I'll definitely come back for it. The view is awesome too! Can't find a better place than this to enjoy Big Sur while eating!

Jen D.

Yelp
We came here to eat at Nepenthe but we were a big party and the wait was over an hour so we opted for this place. It was a nice cafe with just outdoor seating and perfect for todays weather! Gorgeous view! I heard from friends that their sandwiches are good but they had no vegan offering and can't just omit the cheese because they're pre-made. I was hungry so I ordered the arugula salad which was decent. Coffee was okay. This place and Nepenthe don't allow dogs even though they have outdoor dining so cross this off your list if you're traveling with your furbaby (unless you're ok with leaving your pet in your vehicle while you eat). There were a few unhappy customers with pups. :(

Mary M.

Yelp
Views - immaculate, service - attentive, drinks - quality! Loved this place and made a memorable impression for our trip to NorCal. Although it's a bit of a drive I believe it is worth it.

Maggie L.

Yelp
Their sandwiches are too die for! The view was amazing, and the cafe is cheaper than Nepenthe which is right above it. The best sandwich is the Grilled Black Forest Ham sandwich in my opinion :-) I also ordered the Caprese Baguette and the Classic Reuben.

Marcella N.

Yelp
We decided to check out the cafe since Nepenthe had a very long wait. Perhaps it's a better spot for breakfast, compared to lunch. We ordered a sandwich, banana protein shake, and a glass of rose. The food was so poor, that we ate just a little before walking away. The view was amazing, and service was good, but I can't recommend the food at all.

Ainsley E.

Yelp
Come here to have a glass of wine and a snack with a beautiful view! I had a glass of rose with the black forest ham panini which was a super generous portion and a nice little side salad. My friend ordered the cheese plate which I was jealous of -- a nice variety of items and a big portion. Would definitely get that next time. I enjoyed browsing the gift shop on the lower level. Lots of cool gift items, pretty jewelry, books, candles/sprays, etc. Excited to enjoy my beautiful candle when I get home, haha. I will definitely stop by Nepenthe again if I am in the area, just a nice experience.

Jane K.

Yelp
View is amazing. Coffee is decent. We got w cobb salads, 2 coffee, 2 strawberry banana smoothies for our kids, 1 peanut butter & jelly, 1 quesadilla, and 2-3 pastries. Food is decent but the view and overall ambiance makes it even better. Highly recommended

Spencer H.

Yelp
One of the few available cafes in Big Sur. What do you get? Fantastic views, decent quality food, at a price that is expensive but not predatory (there's nothing else around, they know that, but the food is still decent). Came here after finishing a backpacking trip in Big Sur. Caesar Salad tasted great and the scone was real tasty. Views are amazing. Worth a stop!

Evangelene G.

Yelp
I asked if we can stop here for a latte and the parking lot was barely half full, so why not? I knew it was going to be on the pricey side, so I decided to stay in the budget. There's Nepenthe upstairs and Cafe Kevah downstairs and the Phoenix gift shop next to Cafe Kevah. We walked up and placed our order for our lattes and split a generously sized bear claw. Friendly service and we got our food in a timely manner. Seating is on your own - first come, first serve. Anyways, we scored a table overlooking the ocean. The view was so beautiful that I didn't want to leave. It was just the most peaceful moment we could get. I totally underestimated this place as being over priced, but the view made up for it. By the time we left, the place was crowded, so good timing on our part. I would definitely do it again on my next visit! The parking lot was full with diners going to Cafe Kevah and Nepenthe. I had to get out of the truck to get it out of our parking space!

Taufiq H.

Yelp
I love the view from here and the staff is friendly. Birds hang round to keep you company. I liked the cappuccino. Got the breakfast burrito, was greasy, filling enough for two people. Again the food and coffee are not great but it's worth the view! Again you really can beat the view not windy and you get to see amazing lookdowns to the ocean. Dogs are not allowed of the parking lot level

Danny N.

Yelp
The views here are absolutely breath taking. I decided to stop in while driving down highway 1. I think this us a must stop for a stunning and delicious finding experience. Parking was a bit hard but well worth the extra effort.

Tracie M.

Yelp
I usually get the fontina grilled cheese sandwich but I decided to try their signature Dungeness crab Benedict. There was so much fresh crab and it was delicious! The eggs were poached perfectly and the avocado and hollandaise sauce were perfection. Add that to the best views in Big Sur and you have a perfect lunch.

Samantha C.

Yelp
Please change the hours to closing at 2:30! We drove so far to check out this cafe and got there at 3:00 because it said it closed at 4:00. A bit disappointing but would love to check it out next time to try the food and see the view!

Jackie d.

Yelp
Stumbled into this cafe by accident... having no idea how great the food, service and views would be. I had the Rueben sandwich. Normally, I am not a pastrami person (prefer corned beef), but this was one of the best sandwiches I have ever had in my life. Definitely the best Rueben. Cannot recommend this spot enough.

Megan M.

Yelp
We visited Cafe Kevah for a late breakfast/early lunch when driving down the PCH and through Big Sur. The food was simple but fresh and tasty. Service was good - though you do order at the bar. Complimentary cold water was available and self serve which was nice. The real seller is the incredible view from the restaurant deck. We were torn as to whether we ate at Cafe Kevah or Nepenthe, which is in the same building but upstairs and the more famous of the two. We are glad that we chose Cafe Kevah, as it was significantly less expensive than Nepenthe but with similar views, was not table service, and offered a breakfast and lunch menu which allowed some of us to enjoy a late breakfast while others enjoyed a late lunch! It was surprisingly hot and very sunny when we ate there so make sure you bring sun cream and hats.

Moji O.

Yelp
Worst place ever!!!!!!!! What type of outdoor sitting restaurant doesn't allow dogs!! Drove 2 hours out to place for them not to allow dogs. You should update your Yelp.

Dyz S.

Yelp
Amazing view! Food was good, server are really nice even the owner! Him and my husband had a chitchat they are both dutch lol. They are always busy (crazzzzzyyy!) so if you really want to eat here make sure to make a reservation. Usually, customers of Nepenthe will end up eating @ cafe Kevah coz they are always full. Plan your trip ahead! This place is a must-visit when youre in Big Sur, CA.

Jennifer G.

Yelp
Wow, this was an incredible breakfast spot. It's located just below Nepenthe restaurant and with an awesome deck with a view. My partner and I arrived around 10:30 on Easter Sunday. The ordering procedure is to grab a menu, wait in line and then order at the counter. After that, you grab an available table. We both ordered a cup of regular brewed coffee (very steep at $5.25). I ordered the crab Benedict ($30) and they did not skimp on the crab. It was rich and buttery crab on top of an English muffin, avocado and poached eggs with hollandaise sauce. So delicious! The potatoes were crispy and well seasoned. At $30, it's the most expensive item but I would order it again. My partner ordered a scrambled egg breakfast with bacon and potatoes ($14). With tip we paid around $68. It's a steep price but the breakfast was well worth it with a gorgeous view.

Richard O.

Yelp
Café Kevah is open for breakfast and lunch closes most days by 3 o'clock. However this year with all the storms in the sluggish traffic with the road closed it closes around two or 230. Food is very good and the views match it. Offers basic menu of wine and beer and other nonalcoholic drinks. It's a very laid-back environment highly recommended.

Nick I.

Yelp
Great views, food is priced for the view but tastes good. Don't worry about inside or out both are great views

Natalie M.

Yelp
Loved this view! The menu is extensive and I just loved the atmosphere, from the lovely views and the friendly staff. I got a Black Forest Ham panini. It came with a refreshing salad. Also got a cafe mocha and it was so cute! The sandwich was VERY hearty and it came with arugula and gouda. So delicious--perfect combination. I actually only ate half and saved the other half for later and was still full. It took a tad long to come but they must have been busy. I saw Nepenthe nearby (same owners) but I liked that this seemed more low key and more reasonable prices. Definitely check it out if you're in the Big Sur area!

Faith V.

Yelp
Stunning views, we ordered two breakfast burritos which were delicious and the portions were large, it came with a side of pico and sour cream just perfect, the reason I am giving a three star rating, is their is an outside line to place your order and the person taking the order and working the register, screamed at us for moving the table a few inches in front of everyone, we apologize, we just wanted a little bit more shade, but we noticed after that encounter, the customer service was gone. DO NOT MOVE THE TABLE, instead ask for the umbrella to be move.

Lizzie D.

Yelp
I didn't realize that this place was so accessible to the regular ol' person. My husband and I wanted to treat ourselves on our way out from camping for our anniversary and it's an order-at-the-counter kind of place and first come first serve seating - with obviously stellar views. Some of the pastries were delicious, the blueberry muffin I could have done without. Will happily go again to get lost in the view, and maybe even one day try the restaurant.

Ania K.

Yelp
Breakfast with dreamy views. Who wouldn't want to begin their day like this?!? We arrived for opening because we had a busy day of hiking ahead of us. The restaurant is situated on a cliff overlooking the ocean in every direction. The menu is on the smaller side but offers up all of the typical classic breakfasts. We ended up sharing an egg & bacon plate which was just perfect because they offer extremely generous portions. The coffee was delicious as well. They also offer fresh baked goods like muffins and croissants for those looking for something smaller. Service was very quick & friendly. The views are as good as it gets. Truly the perfect way to begin your day...

Emma Y.

Yelp
Unbeatable view + Delicious brunch + Great service + Great vibe I wasn't expecting much delicious food while I was in the middle of nowhere - Big Sur, I mean, I couldn't have phone reception for two days straight. Cafe Kevah is located right next to the famous Nepethe and the view is amazing from the eating area. A Sunday morning wasn't crowded. The workers/Owner were very friendly and patient with my questions. I enjoyed my time here chillin with other guests and soaking in the view while having one of the best eggs Benedict I have ever had in my life. Make sure to check out the gift shop downstairs and the patio! Also, check out the patio area at Nepethe. They even have a Ping Pong table!

Gordon V.

Yelp
Super cute cafe with a breathtaking view of the Pacific Coast along the Big Sur. Many menu choices including brunch, salads and Panini. Hot and cold beverages, and delicious baked goods. Check this place out on your scenic drive.

Cara P.

Yelp
Stopped through here on road trip. Sweet people who work/own this place Even with pandemic, they were so generous with refilling my coffee cup 3 times Best freaking blueberry muffin I need the recipe Outdoors seating was great. So nice to be able to sit down, chill for a bit, and enjoy :) Thank you guys!!

Brian C.

Yelp
The view speaks for itself, but the coffee is just as good. The service was pleasant and hard to have any problems when you can have a view of beautiful California coastline like that.

Keo N.

Yelp
You can grab a quick bite to eat here at the patio without having to wait for the restarant at Nepenthe. There is a beautiful view of coast if you can grab a seat on the western edge. Parking is always a challenge if you arrive at the wrong time.

Michael H.

Yelp
Absolutely incredible spot tucked away in Big Sur. Beautiful outside patio overlooking the ocean. The best hot apple cider that I've ever had, and the food was amazing. Definite repeat spot.

Neil V.

Yelp
Great views of the coast! Nice place to watch the waves sway while sipping a cocktail. I got their Phoenix Sunrise cocktail (tequila, orange juice, and cranberry). Basic drink (nothing to rave about) but I enjoyed it and the place had a nice deck to sit and relax with friends and family.

Marin G.

Yelp
First off, we called the cafe yesterday confirming ADA accessibility and a confirm the cafe could be reached by a ramp. We were assured that the cafe had a ramp and accessibility parking was available. Unfortunately when we arrived this morning we were very disappointed! The cafe has no ramp and can only be accessed through several flights of stairs. The only available ramp at the location was not a ramp at all but a steep hill/road that leads to the main overcrowded restaurant on top. Even then there is no way to reach the cafe from the top without stairs. We were upset seeing as we specifically called to confirm that there was a ramp! In the end we were mislead by staff the believe ADA accessibility, wasting our time and losing them themselves costumers. FYI we went to The COAST instead which was great and ADA accessible.

Hemal K.

Yelp
Fresh food, very friendly staff and excellent location. Perfect place while driving by this area. It is secluded but boy it gets busy and you'll have to wait for a little while but worth your time. Reasonable priced menu with many options got breakfast and lunch.

Michelle W.

Yelp
This quaint coffee and breakfast eatery is fabulous. The views alone are breathtaking. The food menu is limited but limited to amazing breakfast dishes. Platters are big they won't disappoint. The eggs Benedict is beautifully plated and the 2 scrambled eggs platter is delicious with toast and perfectly cooked 4 pieces of bacon and breakfast potatoes. Their coffee is delicious anyway you get it. Their pot of tea is made with loose tea leaves. Multi cup of tea! Their Cinnamon roll is great. They are known for this palate gem! It's not like city roll. The cinnamon sugar is crusted to the outside making the outside have a slight crunch and the inside is so soft. No icing needed just a hot tea or coffee to compliment it. Highly recommend Kevah next time you are in the mood for breakfast lunch or dinner. 3rd time visiting and will continue to come back.

C T.

Yelp
this is a great place to eat if your in the area. a little pricy -$100 lunch for two - but don't mind paying this if it's over the top. which it was. but they need to redo there web site. it's located on the ochean side of ca hy one. large beautiful complex with bright umbrellas enjoy‼ we did.

Khana P.

Yelp
This is what a $8 cappuccino looks like. And it's always this bad (tried 3 tines). Don't get coffee here.

Olivia G.

Yelp
Yummy food and a great view! We came for Nepenthe and stayed for Kevah when the wait was too long for my kiddos. The paninis were delish and my salad daughter loved the salad that accompanied her fancy grilled cheese. They especially loved drinking soda from a bottle and my husband and I loved the view!

Marina C.

Yelp
When nature and good people get together, only amazing things can come out! First off, the view from Cafe Kevah is worth a stop. It is gorgeous and offers panoramic scenery of the surrounding ocean and mountains. What puts the cherry on top of the cake are the beverages and the staff! The delicious apple cider that I ordered was garnished with fresh orange, with a sprinkle of lemon zest and infused with mouthwatering spices. I have never had an apple cider of this superb quality in America! While waiting for my drink, I had a lovely conversation with the nice gentleman there. He was very knowledgable about the fantastic history of the cafe and told me how the staff treasures and preserves the ideals on which the place was founded on. Everyone is welcome here and you can stay as long as you like to enjoy the breathtaking view. There is also a restaurant next to the cafe if you're craving a heavier meal, but do NOT leave without stopping by Cafe Kevah! It is well worth it. The entire facility is very clean, well taken care of, and in a rustic style. There were also locals and tourists enjoying the pleasant atmosphere. I look forward to coming back!

Yelp
Honest YELP Review: I saw the reviews to this Cafe while planning our family trip to Big Sur. My family of 10 wanted to meet up and have a nice meal before camping. The plan was to have a large fulfilling breakfast before camping a few days. Anyway... we found this place. The food looked delicious and the view looked spectacular so we decided on this cafe... long story short the employees are rude and the food was trash. You are better off saving your money and or eating elsewhere. We honestly would of been happier if we went to McDonald's. Seriously. I'm not one to complain, I am writing this review to be honest with future customers... our morning was perfect until we got to this cafe... we got their and the workers were in a bad mood. They didn't say have a seat or take a menu or anything, we had to keep asking questions to get guidance out of the employees. Once we sat down we wanted to change tables because the sun was in my parents face. We asked the female server if it was okay that we changed tables and she said "no"... once we explained to her that the sun was in our face she said she understood that we were going to move the tables. We didn't say that. We said change tables, as In sitting elsewhere.. whatever though ... besides the point they got our order wrong and made us feel unwelcome... plus The food had NO flavor. To top it off everything was extremely overpriced.... For 2 people with OJ it was about $60.. unless your wealthy and don't care about flavor I wouldn't come here.....all the 1 star reviews on this yelp page are 100% accurate
