Café Maxwell

This was the first meal my girlfriend and I had after a 12-hour flight from Singapore to Amsterdam. We absolutely loved the atmosphere, music, and food here. The manager was very polite and had a charming smile, which gave us such a wonderful start to our trip in Amsterdam!

The blonde waitress is very rude and unfriendly. She lifted the awning without warning and it nearly hit us all in the face. They served us cider in a glass, not a pint as is usually served, and the menu doesn't specify this either. The glass was half full, and half of that was ice. So imagine how much liquid there was that they didn't send it back. I don't recommend it.

Recently changed I think, food is really really good and price good also for Amsterdam. Happy hour at 10PM Big group allowed

Updated: 10 years later this is still a great place. Good food, friendly prices, friendly staff. Even made me a pretty good old fashioned that wasn't on the menu 🙏🏻 2014: Relaxte plek, goed eten. Aardig personeel.

The staff is really friendly and you feel welcome. It’s the Amsterdam vibe without the hipster nuance. We ended up here because our original plan was cancelled, but it was totally worth ending up here. The Beyond burger is really nice: juicy, nice sauce, nicely plated. The fries are from Friet uit Zuyd and they’re a bit sweet and crunchy. The mayonaise could have had some more flavour, but it could have been a vegan option. We didn’t ask. All in all, nice place, nice vibe, good food.

Everything was great, the staff, the food and the drinks. We had lots of fun here on a Monday night “pop quiz” night which is a weekly night! Totally recommend🍻

We have order Cheese fondue since majority of the tables ordered this, and understood that we made the correct decision. It was delicious, on the side we have ordered beef steak and Truffle-Risotto kroketjes with fries. They also offer vegan and vegetarian options. The atmosphere is warm but a bit too crowded and loud. They also have an outdoor seating which i think would be perfect for spring and summer. If you are in Oost you should definitely check this place👍🏼 The price per person is between 30-40 euro which is decent given the amount of food we have ordered:)

Amazing Cheese Fondue here! Love the gin tonic. Everyone is friendly and will try the tiramisu next time :)

Great service, great food, nice atmosphere. We felt lucky to have found this place. I would definitely recommend for a casual meal or a drink.

Only here to state for the record that the four stars others have given Café Maxwell was our experience this past evening, a Monday night. In an up and coming area we understand recently developed, appears there's plenty of strong competition within the block for drinks and food so you'd better be on your "A" game. A nice crowd when we sat down at 8:30 p.m. for dinner, another sign the locals know a good thing. Charming outdoor dining space with room under a spacious tent or a chance at several small two-person tables just outside the area. We opted for the latter. Came looking for something light and a couple of glasses of wine and were not disappointed. Settled for the Mixwell which is a plank with meats and cheeses, small bit of salad, olives and the other in the party a Caesar salad. Has the feel of a nice French outdoor cafe so on a cool but pleasant night the result was a delightful evening. I could see stopping by here during the day for a beer or glass of wine and lunch as well. Highly recommended.

We were staying at nearby Hotel Arena and this place was recommended to us by the staff. It was raining but we were still able to sit outside in the enclosed patio. The staff was very responsive and friendly. Recommend a local beer that was vary good. We had the Angus burger. Served with a small side salad and fries. Delicious. Would recommend to all

Spare ribs..... yum!!!! I ordered food to go, and it was still so delicious at home. The burger (although not my dish) looked awesome and the bun was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Fries are great too!!

This pub is open pretty late and the food is good. It's nothing special or to write home about. The staff was friendly and accommodating

I have been to Maxwell now 2 times and I can say that I am definitely a fan! 1st time during summer: Great big terrace to relax with friends where you also can choose the awesome IJ beer . 2nd time during winter: My first dinner at Maxwell and I must say that they steak was really GREAT. Good price for a steak and it was really juicy and too done with amazing fries. The service was really friendly where I also requested the following for a good friend of mine who will leave us for New Year for an internship: - Tequillashots - Cheesecake with some fireworks - Goodbye song 'New York'! They even said that we didn't need to pay for the cheesecake at all - isn't this just really awesome?! I will be back soon!

Have come here regularly since I arrived Ams! They serve good quality reasonable priced lunch: hamburger, sandwich, salad, etc... I like their crunchy brown bread, toasted just nicely. For some reason, the place is often packed compared to other nearby restaurants.

Such a wonderfully charming restaurant in a newly developed area of several options. Service was very friendly (playfully teased us about an English menu, which they do have). Food was excellent! We had the Sea Bass Risotto and the Tenderloin Sate. The latter came with an unreal "spicy ketchup" that wasn't so much spicy as it was a delightful hybrid of ketchup and Thai peanut sauce...I wish I could buy it in a bottle to take home.

Super gezellig cafe/bar located in the (underrated) east side of Amsterdam. Stopped by for a few glasses of wine with a friend and was so surprised by how warm and comfortable and perfectly lively this place is. Dim light, a casual feel without being too casual (read: dirty dive bar), good service and happy locals. A perfect spot for some weekday drinks with friends. I didn't try the food, but I'll be back to try more drinks before too long. Oh, and for the warmer months, there's a pretty big terrace area out front. Score!

We loved the cafe. Get the wit picpoul and the salmon patties with asparagus. Seating outside is cute.

In the east of Amsterdam you will also find a lot of nice eateries. Unfortunately i do not visit that part of Amsterdam enough, simply because it is not on my daily route. But the other day we were looking for a place to have a quick lunch near to the OLVG before our appointment with mr doctor. We choose Maxwell. We were thrilled by our choice. Inside it was comfortably warm and cosy with a casual atmosphere. I presume a lot of nice locals and hospital personnel who were having lunch here. My sourdough bread of the Vlaamsch Broodhuys with hummus, feta and grilled vegetables was delicious. The latte macchiato was 10 points and came with one of my favorite cookies wrapped around the coffee spoon. They organize different events weekly, theme evenings and live music on sunday afternoons.

We stayed at the nearby Hotel Arena, and wanted to try a nearby restaurant away from the main part of town. Cafe Maxwell was a welcome change of pace from the tourist spots. The menu was entirely in Dutch (no english translation), but our server was very friendly and took the time to explain what everything was, and offered suggestions. The food we had was very good, and the locally brewed beers were tasty. I would highly recommend this restaurant if you are in Amsterdam.

Came here right after our flight! Ordered Moscow mules, Long Island iced teas, and espresso martinis - all were delicious! Got the nachos. Highly recommend !!!

Monday night at Maxwell; happened to be a Pub Quiz We were with quite a big group, about 12 people. Most of us had food, including burgers and the satay. I had spare ribs and two kinds of G&Ts. First, as to the G&Ts, I had the Dutch (VL92 and ginger) and the Bobby's (Bobby's gin, orange slice and cloves). Personally, I preferred Bobby's. Mainly because the Dutch seemed to have no alcohol in it. Second, on to the food I thought the spare ribs that I ordered were quite tasty. The sauces were not the best. (If they were not) they definitely tasted like a sub-par ready-made sauce from a tube. The fries were alright. Finally, the service was fairly good. Our waiters throughout the night were friendly and able to make recommendations, if necessary. It was slightly more complicated to get their attention during the quiz though, but I get that since it was busy. Oh yes, almost forgot, our team got second place ;)

My favorite place in the east-side. Great service, minimal atittude, happy people, good food. What more is there yo want from a local bar/ restaurant.
