Had a negative experience dining here.
1. Indoors was closed for a private event and we were given a table outdoors, fine. However, once the event ended and the tables indoors were empty, we weren’t given a choice to move inside.
2. Being given a table outdoors, the service was negligible. There wasn’t a single staff paying attention to the tables outdoors and we couldn’t even get their attention. The only time they came outdoors was to serve us our food and asked us for payment.
3. Regarding the payment, the staff came to ask us to pay RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of our meal. Reason? “We are going for our break so we need to settle the bill first”. Huh? Having worked in the FnB industry before, I believe what FnB establishments usually do is to let their staff go on staggered break times, unless they specifically mention that they close at certain timings for their break, which Cafe Melba made no mention of, neither was it indicated anywhere.
4. Food was subpar. Fish and chips tasted bland, and when I say fish and chips, it really was the fish and the chips. Both were a pale yellow without any significant taste to them. Fish was 60% batter, 40% meat (depicted in the photo) - $23 before GST & Service Charge.
5. Matcha latte - a picture speaks a thousand words. Looking at the colour, you’d know it’s an instant flop. All I tasted was diluted milk with just a subtle hint of matcha, and they shamelessly included it in the menu and named it ‘Matcha Latte’. A glimpse at a recent review tells us the same story about their matcha latte, and you’d think they’d made some improvements. Spoiler alert: they didn’t. $8 before GST & Service Charge for this absurdity.
6. The only saving grace was the ‘Beef Me Up’ burger, which tasted good. If I’m being objective, the beef patty was not overdone and still retained its juiciness. Thus, an extra star for an otherwise 1-star review.
