"Traditional Belgian Stoofvlees at Cafe Novo When visitors to Belgium ask me what to eat here (besides the inevitable chocolate, waffles and frites), my reply is always stoofvlees (unless they are vegetarians!). Stoofvlees, or carbonnade a la Flamande as it’s called in French, literally translates to ‘stew meat.’ Essentially, it is cubed beef, stewed in Belgian beer for so long it melts in your mouth. It’s typically served over mashed potatoes or Belgian fries and it is hearty, heavy and heavenly. In the city centre, not far from Grand Place, is a great place to try stoofvlees, called Cafe Novo. This colourfully quirky Belgian cafe always has an eclectic crowd. The menu is varied and caters well to vegetarians (the falafels are great!) as well as carnivores. Cafe Novo is open every day (a rarity in Brussels ) and is great for a late Sunday brunch. They have a small but sunny back garden that books up quickly. Thursday evenings Novo hosts ‘cocktail concerts’ so you can enjoy a bit of live music as you dine."

Great place, and great people. The meals were great. Prices like everywhere in Brussels.

Really cool small place. We walked by it many times decided to stop today. It is great food and almost all locals and local style dishes. Steak and fries is good and beer selection is long.

Google
Lovely location in a central square but more hidden from the rest, got a recommendation from a bar worker and we were not disappointed, traditional Belgian food at a reasonable price. Definitely not a tourist trap. We got scampi and 2 carbonnades, delicious food, diverse choice also for pastas or salads, lots of beer choices, spacious terrace. Would recommend

We stopped by at this place to drink coffee and tea. Very kind staff who are helpful and welcoming. The lady can’t speak English but she was very kind that we wanted to give the credits.

Café Novo in Brussels offers a mixed dining experience that balances positives with some drawbacks. While it's not the best place in town, it provides a decent opportunity to sample Belgian gastronomy without breaking the bank. The prices are on the higher side considering the quality, but it's a reasonable option for exploring local cuisine affordably. The ambiance at Café Novo is a bit of a mixed bag. The interior might not be the cutest, but the terrace offers a pleasant setting, especially during good weather. It's a relaxing spot to enjoy some of Belgium's great beers and take in the atmosphere of the city center. Service is generally satisfactory, though it can vary depending on the day and time. The staff are friendly enough and provide adequate attention to guests. Overall, Café Novo is worth a stop if you're exploring the city center and looking for a place to enjoy Belgian dishes and local beers. It's not a place that will necessarily wow you, but it serves its purpose as a decent option for tourists and locals alike.

Google
Café Novo offers a satisfying experience for those looking to try traditional Belgian cuisine. We had the opportunity to taste their “Carbonnades”, A flavorful Belgian Flemish Stew. The sauce was rich and added depth to the tender beef. The “Boulettes”, Meatballs in tomato sauce, could have been more flavorful if cooked a bit longer, but they still provided a decent taste. Both dishes came with traditional fries which were quite good. If you are seeking a taste of traditional Belgian fare in a pleasant setting, Café Novo is a suitable choice.

Myself and two others in my party just wanted a hot chocolate, each, when ordered and asking how much they'd be, we were told €12, total. But, after we had gotten and drank them, when going to pay, we were told that it would actually be €15. This feels slimely, gross and unacceptable behaviour.

Google
10/10 cozy bar/café with food options, while we didn't try much the fries were great and the plates passing by looked good! I'd been craving a negroni for 2 weeks and while it wasn't on the menu the team last night was happy to give it a try and I was so thankful. Can only recommend!

Yelp
Really nice place. We had a very good meal. I had a salad (I guess the first one on the menu) and it was really simple but delicious, with apples and an exquisite vinaigrette! The place is neat and quiet even when it starts to get busy. The position is wonderful, close to the city centre and on a lovely square. I suggest you to come here for a quite cheap lunch and a relaxing flavourin

Yelp
A neat little cafe on a rather quieter street, with out door seats, up front and in the back. I've the Mediterranean salad, which was really good. They open on Whit Monday - a public holiday.

Yelp
Came here alone and felt very at home, the two waitresses were very welcoming and helpful. Got to try some belgian beer and Carbonnade à la flamande. 23 euros total for my meal and beer - would definitely recommend!

Yelp
My husband and I had to wait for our Airbnb to be cleaned, so we waited here. We actually returned here three times during our visit in Brussels. The food is very good and the service was outstanding.

Yelp
Decent place for a good lunch (daily special!) and drink. Enjoyable terrace, when the weather is good, on a quiet place not far from the city centre.

Yelp
Overly sweet sauce, neighborhood feel, with a bit of a bug problem. During our recent trip, we came here after a long day of wandering while super hungry. It was late November, so only indoor seating, of course. Menu was pretty unexpensive, in English, and we could get a seat, unlike two other places we tried, so here we came. Sat quickly, and ordered from the pretty decent beer list. My entree was beef in a beer sauce with fries - sounds good, right? Nope. The meat was tough and the sauce was sickly sweet. I could only eat about half of it before I just gave up, my girlfriend felt the same about my meal. Her pasta was pretty decent but nothing amazing. I mentioned bugs, right? While walking out, I saw a bunch of dead bugs on multiple shelves behind the bar. Didn't see any living bugs, but seeing a bunch of dead ones made me less than happy, so much so that I never even told my gf about it (sorry babe). Neither of us got sick and everything looked clean, but seeing dead bugs and my meal not being great equals a 2-star to me.

Yelp
Cheap, fulfilling food. Loved the traditional dishes. Nice atmosphere and seating, as well, and not too crowded but still lively.

Yelp
A lovely charmfull place in the middle of the city! If you are looking to have a soup, a drink, a good beer or to dine out, this place offers you everything. The interior looks a bit vintage - retro with different tables, chairs, etc. The food is good, especially the soups and it is not expensive at all. The staff is really nice and fast. They have outside seatings in front of the restaurant (perfect to wacht people walking by) and in the back yard garden, really lovely and with a bit green. I just like to come here on an afternoon and chill out, having a good beer.

Yelp
simple cafe, beef stew was delicious, fries were great. Cafe was a little homey and not the best kept on the inside, but it was a great experience for someone traveling alone. Staff was really nice. Would come here again for a casual dinner or meet!

Yelp
This place has pretty good food. It serves more deli type food. I had Wok de poulet et legumes (wok chicken and vegetables). My partner had homemade fish and chips. For drinks we had Westmalle Trappist and Vedett beers.

Yelp
Amazing! Me and my boyfriend were recently in Brussels for a trip throughout Europe. I am vegetarian and it is hard to find a good vegetarian dish in Brussels. This place seemed to have a great selection of things for me as well as traditional non-vegetarian dishes for my boyfriend. He said that the Flemish stew he had was the best meal of the trip. I got the veggie burger and it was delicious. They put ricotta cheese on it, and I never thought it would be good, but it was amazing! Will definitely return here if ever back!

Yelp
Came across this place by chance yesterday. It has a good choice of food, from main dishes, burgers to salads and snacks, all pretty good. It has seating on the street, bit even better, it has seating in their garden at the back. Perfect for a warm summer evening. Staff was friendly too. It also seems like a cosy place for cooler days. I will come back.

Yelp
Great little place with lots of character. The marinated quinoa with tomatoes and basil is enough of a reason to stop by, but everything else we had was great as well. Inside provides a great atmosphere, but the outside seating is good as well facing an intersection with minimal traffic (at least on a Saturday evening).

Yelp
Excellent food at reasonable prices. We had chicken with jasmine rice and veggie burger, both dishes turned out excellent. For dessert, we had crepe mikado which is crepe with hot chocolate and vanilla icecream. It was okay, would not recommend that dessert. The restaurant has very basic setup for indoor seating but has good outdoor seating area. Server was not friendly at all. They have kids high chairs, if you are looking for a kid-friendly restaurant.
