Melanin Cafe – Opelika, Alabama - Gastro Obscura

"When Catrice Hixon worked as a barista in college, she would create off-menu beverages for customers, playing around with the different syrups, beans, and milks to create the perfect cup. She knew, even then, that she would open up her own coffee shop one day. Melanin Cafe is a Black-owned coffee shop in Opelika, Alabama, that celebrates coffee, culture, and Blackness. The café features local Opelika history on its menu, and the drinks are named after important African-American leaders, sayings, and events. The “Rebel” is a dark roast composed of tart, citric, and acidic blends; the “Black Ice” has chocolate and graham tones and subtle hints of fruit. The café’s name, too, refers to the valuing of people of every skin color. But it’s the espresso menu where Hixon’s love for coffee and culture comes to life. The “Aerospace” is named after Mary Jackson, the first black engineer at NASA, the “Feelin’ Good” pays homage to Nina Simone’s classic hit, and the “Black Panther,” of course, is named after Huey P. Newton and the Black Panther Party. Each shot is made with combinations of vanilla, cinnamon, coconut, and hazelnut. The café is a family affair. Catrice’s husband Jax Nixon is a co-owner and barista, and her sister Crystal Slaughter is the baker, making sweet treats and desserts including brownies, cream cheese danishes, and red velvet cupcakes. Know Before You Go Visit the Melanin Cafe website to search for your drink’s name and learn the history of the people and places behind each drink." - mollieunruh, yoink7, Omnia Saed

Wow just wow was totally blown away by this place. Zack & Jake were our servers and did a great job taking care of us.We started with the Crab stuffed avocado unbelievable. I had the cobia and was blown away. We live in Florida and the cobia was the best I have ever had. My wife had the pork chop and she really enjoyed it. We finished with the bananas foster made table side and it was perfect. We just returned from Europe and were missing the great restaurants that Europe has to offer. I would put Cafe 123 as one of the best places we have had the pleasure to dine. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

The food was phenomenal. I had the seasonal salad, bread service, the beer battered asparagus, and the scallop crudo. All excellent. The staff had their hands full attending to eight tables plus me at the bar, so not a lot of time for chitchat, which is understandable. That said, everyone was highly professional, friendly, and intentional. You can tell they take pride in what they do. And the Cafe 123 finale (on their cocktail menu) was an absolute show stopper! Can’t wait to come back for brunch (:

My wife and I needed a "Honey Date". We had both been working a lot lately and had very little time to see each other. I decided to take us to this wonderful place in Downtown Opelika. I was very, very impressed. I highly recommend this place to anyone wanting a great dinner experience

Wow is all I can say. This place is a 10/10 across the board. Our server hannah was super professional yet personable and warm. I genuinely think she knew me better than i knew myself with her drink and wine recommendations. The food was off the chain. We ordered the table Caesar salad, table bread, the filet and the salmon. Everything was incredible. The Caesar is must, it is truly the best I’ve ever had. Salmon and steak were prepared to perfection. Best food and restaurant experience that I’ve had in the 4 years I’ve lived in the area. I don’t know his this place isn’t talked about more as I’m genuinely blown away.

Cafe 123, located in the heart of Opelika, Alabama, is not just a restaurant; it’s a journey through time and flavors. This culinary haven, nestled in Opelika’s historic downtown, has a rich history that adds to its charm. During the 1950s, it was known as the Haynes Soda Pop Hangout, where locals gathered to enjoy refreshing sodas and good company. Today, Cafe 123 continues to capture the essence of that era while offering a diverse menu that caters to modern tastes. From succulent steaks to fresh seafood, each dish tells a story of culinary craftsmanship. The cozy ambiance and historic undertones make it a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike. Embark on a nostalgic culinary adventure at Cafe 123 and experience the legacy of the Haynes Soda Pop Hangout. I enjoyed the shrimp and grits on a recent visit and it was absolutely delicious and the service was great. The updated interior includes white linens, artwork and funky fixtures. One of my favorite restaurants in the area. #Cafe123 #OpelikaDining #SodaPopHangout #HistoricEats #cafe123

Nice place. First time going. We went for Sunday brunch. Shrimp and Grits were great. Not exactly typical Cajun Shrimp and Grits but delightful just the same. Pimento cheese adds a unique flare to the Grits, not overly pimento-y. Our server was very accommodating and friendly.

We went in a while back, but I had an absolutely amazing time at Cafe 123. From the moment I walked in, the vibe was welcoming, relaxed, and just the right amount of classy. Everything from the lighting to the music made it feel like the perfect spot for a night out. It truly is a hidden gem in downtown Opelika. My server, Kendyl, was fantastic! She was friendly, attentive, and had great suggestions along with knowledge of the specials. The staff overall really made me feel taken care of. The food was nothing short of incredible . We started with the mussels and shrimp cocktail. The mussels came in flavorful and savory sauce and the cocktail sauce was delicious. For the main course, we had the fresh catch and ribeye (with brown sugar rub 🤤). It completely hit the spot. You can’t go wrong with a steak here! We had espresso martinis to finish off an amazing meal, and they were PERFECT! Huge compliments to chef Eron and company for putting together such a well-thought-out and delicious menu. Every dish exceeded expectations! Thank you to the manager, Hannah, for checking in on us and making sure we were settled in well 😄 All in all, this place nailed it… great food, great people, and an easygoing yet polished atmosphere. Can’t wait to come back and try more!
