8 Viennese Coffeehouses for Any Trip to Austria

"Bohemian meets traditional at this lovingly renovated Old Viennese coffeehouse that doubles as a bookstore. A true neighborhood hangout in a quiet residential area, “it’s a little bit like a village,” waiter Daniel Burger tells me. You’re as likely to find nose-pierced hipsters as ladies who lunch. Though the décor ticks all the turn-of-the-century boxes — brass lamp fixtures, gold-framed mirrors, marble tables, and velvet-covered banquettes — informally T-shirted waiters and big easy chairs make it feel more casual. Felt-topped tables await card players, while eclectic books beckon from shelves and display stands. Café Schopenhauer is named for 19th-century philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer and even the breakfast dishes have philosopher names (Friedrich Nietzsche, anyone?). While the pastries are limited, even the menu fuses old and new: avocado toast and soy milk matcha alongside bestselling beef goulash and egg dumplings. Either way, settle in with a good book and while away a pleasant afternoon." - Veronica Stoddart

Beautiful place with great vibes! The filled croissant was amazing, and the Palatschinken was okay. We were in a hurry, and when I asked at the counter if I could order there, the staff snapped: “We’ll come to you! This is a coffee house!” — okay, chill, coffee house police 😅 The orange juice came in a fancy wine glass, but barely filled — kinda funny, kinda sad. 😂 Lovely spot overall, just wish the service matched the atmosphere.

This was very disappointing, the place looked good from the reviews and is very close to where I am staying but the service was terrible. We asked the waiter if we could sit and since the first moment his attitude was off, he said we could sit if there were tables available, we were gonna sit and he yelled at us that someone else was first. I mean then maybe pay more attention to your costumers waiting? how were we supposed to know? We sat down and the other young waiter was nice. One of our dishes never came, the waiter never came to check the tables on our side, when we called him to ask again for the dish he acted rude and careless again. He acted surprised there was a dish missing, even though he apologized, service was very disappointing. We waved several times to pay, we just stood up and went to pay in the cashier. Never coming back, it’s sad cause it’s a cool place and the food is good! I was thinking having breakfast with my family there a few days in this trip but I will not. We felt discriminated cause of our nationality, all the other costumers got a great service, he even chatted with them. PS we thought it was a croissant with jam and butter, it was a plain white bread. Hope you can sort this out in the future.

I really needed the cozy and welcoming atmosphere of Cafe Schopenhauer, which has a modern feel (book store/dinner) without losing touch of its roots. The Putengeschnetzeltes and Topfenstrudel were delicious and the staff friendly and efficient. The Tom Waits playing just before closing only added to the atmosphere

Google
My absolute favorite cafe in Vienna! When someone asks me- where would you take your friends/family, this would be it. The atmosphere is unbelievable, it’s cozy, comfy and the coffee is delicious. This is perfect for your game nights, brunch, family meetings or just doing work or uni stuff. Also- lots of books, also english, and great choices. They also advise you, if you can’t decide. I always go for the vegans lentil soup, which is my favourite dish. They in general offer more traditional viennese food, so not a lot of vegan options, but it is worth every cent. Space is enough, but not really for groups bigger than 6, and book a table on rainy days!

Great place to have a morning coffee and a quick bite. Inside is extremely cosy, and you immediately get a warm feeling as you step in. Your perfect place to also sit down and relax or read and study. Try to get a reservation before you come here. If not possible, then you will wait a bit inside, and they find a place for you while you sit at the bar. Prices are very reasonable. 10 of 10 for me!

Google
A book-store-cafe with Frittatensuppe. You don't have to tell me twice. The vibes - on point Viennese. The food - nice and comforting. The drinks - one point honestly, if you love Viennese Cafehaus-Kultur. Cafehauskultur meets booklovers - and vintage lovers

Yelp
We stopped here for breakfast on a Tuesday morning. What a surprising gem! Best black tea I've had in Wien in a month. Service was friendly and professional. Recently renovated in an Alt Bau cafe, but still has that old Wien "cafe culture" vibe. Comfy chairs and benches with heavy tables that the waiters can help you get into. The menu items are themed around famous writers and philosophers. The soft boiled egg was cooked perfectly, and the homemade "house marmalade" was a delicious apricot spread. The special twist here is the wonderful collection of books and cards for sale. There is also a piano to one side. I wonder if it gets played? I will definitely return. As as aside, if you go to any Austrian restaurant for a sit down meal, 30 minutes before closing, you are likely to be turned away. Closing time means that is the time the staff go home, not the time the last customer is allowed in the door. Work life balance is highly prized here - even for service industry staff - which is why they still have practically everything closed on Sundays and holidays.

Yelp
I came at the morning for the first time, and very thing was great. I got a Fr. Cafe and Kipferl Fruhstuck. Don't miss it!

Yelp
Delicious food and drink, but an uncontrollable abysslike feeling as the representations surrounding me sublate into a dark unconscious 'wille' to order another melange

Yelp
We wanted to grab a quick bite on our way out to a concert nite. Checked that they are open until 7pm. Alas... showed up at 6:30pm and was politely turned away. Ugh.

Yelp
This cafe serves traditional Austrian food with a daily menu for 6.90 EUR (starter and main). The food is really tasty and the portion sizes are perfect. If you're not keen on the daily special then you can go for something from the menu which includes the typical Austrian dishes for a good price. It also does brunch on a weekend which I am dying to try! The cafe is really big and good for groups and the staff are really friendly. The decor is quite traditional and there are a lot of old black and white pictures of Vienna which I thought were really cool. If you're looking for a little local restaurant to eat traditional Austrian food then try this place!

Yelp
The lunchtime menu gives good value for money, and I really like their home-made cakes.
