We wanted a light lunch after a walking tour of Hamburg and our guide recommended this place. It's on a street with LOTS of options of places to eat so if you swing by and it doesn't look like it's for you, you undoubtedly will find a place on the same street that is. We don't speak any German and their English was very limited so it took a bit longer for us to get situated and order. We did the best we could and thanks to the Google Translate app we got what we wanted. (And the staff their was super accommodating as we tried to navigate German!) There is a lot to choose from for vegetarians in both the sweet and savory realms. I had a Spinach Feta Tort. It was small, but the perfect size for the amount of food I typically eat at lunch...and I tried my first Franzbrötchen...the pastry that Hamburg is famous for – kind of a dense croissant with layers of sticky caramel-like cinnamon and butter binding it all together. I liked it, but had one I liked more at another spot later on this trip. My kid liked the potato omelet he got...Omelet may be a weird translation as it was more of a quiche-like slice...decent portion size and he thought it was really good. I can't stress how much they were accommodating to us English speakers with the language barrier...they really wanted to make sure we had what we wanted and took good care of us. If we were in Hamburg again, we'd definotely come back and try more of the delcious looking items on display!

The waitress said the pastry was warm and when it arrived cold, they microwaved it and said if I did not like it I could get something else. The pastry tasted old and very stale so I told them I would like something else and they took the pastry back. They forced me to pay for a pastry I did not eat AT ALL! We had a bite and sent it back. I would not go here

Exceptional across the board. The espresso was on point & the pastel de Nata with fresh cherry was a melt in the mouth experience.

Loved the Patel de Nata! As fresh and authentic as they get!

Had some breakfast and a Nata here. The breakfast was standard, some bread and sliced meats and scrambled eggs. Nothing special but their nata’s were amazing. They are warmed up and super crispy, flakey, and buttery. Would come back just for these!

Average food. Ordered cherry tart, they gave me another tart. Asked why and they said someone else had ordered it before me. They did not communicate that with me and just gave another random tart instead. Not very welcoming. Cheesecake was very hard.

Fabulous little bakery/cafe. I only stopped in for desert but both the Pasteis de Nata and the Nut cake were delicious!! the cafe has a nice atmostphere and is off the "super touristy" path.

Yelp
Oh my god Pastel de nata you complete me. What is this heavenly creation of vanilla, custard and cinnamon? Once I had one I had to have more, three more to be exact. These things are addicting like crack. Cafe Sul is an adorable little cafe with all kinds of delicious items such as cheesecake, custards, and assorted coffees. There are plenty of items on the menu and if anything you can just come in here to get a Pastel de nata which is a rich Portugese egg custard. If a baklava and a Chinese dan ta had a baby, you'd get a pastel de nata. The crust was crunchy, flaky, and sweet and there was more than enough custard inside to make me ooze with happiness. In fact, I haven't felt this way about a dessert since I first had a chocolate soufflé at Roy's. The chai tea latte I had was mediocre and somewhat watery and the service here was slow due to only one server working. Other than that it's a delight and I would come back to try other things.

Yelp
I can't reco this place - the interior is cheap and uninspired and the waitress clearly needs to attend a workshop on how to behave properly. The two of us sat at a tiny table and when a group of 5 men arrived she placed them right to us w/o even asking us if it's okay for us. There was enough room to place them at another table, but the way they placed them it felt we were part of the group. This behavior is unempathic. Also, the waitress needs to way more friendly, meaning smiling and make you feel welcome which she didn't. Can't say anything about the food, because of the aforementioned situation we didn't order any. If you are at the portuguese district here in Hamburg there are better places here for sure.

Yelp
Delicious cakes and natas. The interior is not the most fashionable one but I read here that it's authentic. Service is ok. It is for sure the place worth visiting.

Yelp
Café sul is a breakfast and coffee shop in the popular Portuguese area of Hamburg, between the harbor and the city center. The food was good and there good portions. The shop itself is very simple and small. The atmosphere was a bit turbulent because there were a lot of customers.
