On the Grid : Titanic

"Owners Patrick and Rob have been at the helm of Café Titanic for 30 years. Considered an institution in Old Montreal, the cafe is nestled in the basement of a heritage building, and grew from a 10-seat bar (the small size of which gave the café its ironic name) to an ever growing network of rooms and nooks. All the food is homemade, down to the bouillon from which the soup is freshly made every day, and very vegetarian-friendly. Look out for a decorative cash register dating back to 1950 (and belonging to Titanic’s predecessor Cafe Sandy) that can only charge a maximum price of $2.97. Or the owners’ office door, unearthed from a separate part of the heritage building in which Café Titanic is located, and which previously belonged to a company that once sold return tickets for the Titanic (though as history tells us, they were never used). Or a dry room that was once a safe, and now holds the world’s most carefully kept sugar. Overall, a must-see in Old Montreal." - Shopify

Truly the Best Food I’ve Ever Had. I had the pleasure of stumbling upon Cafe Titanic in June and it is truly the best food I’ve ever had. After spending a month travelling around Holland and Germany, I can confidently say nothing compares! I still dream about the Cubano. The meat is so tender and juicy it quite literally melts in your mouth, not to mention the bread which is so deliciously unique, crispy and perfect. The Grilled Cheese is another must try! It’s like no other you’ve ever had, guaranteed. The thin slices of sweet potato perfectly melts with the cheese and amazingly elevates the sandwich, pressed and grilled to a crisp. Paired with Valentino and ketchup it’s nostalgic yet gourmet. Don’t forget about the chocolate pots, it’s like heaven in a cup! So beyond silky and fudgy. The food, ambience and service was so good I barely managed to take any photos in the midst of living in the moment, and not being able to resist the urge to scarf the food down immediately. This place is truly a gem and if you’re lucky enough to try it, it’ll stick with you for life. We couldn’t help but come back the next day, only 2 hours before leaving Montreal, suitcases in hand, and were greeted by the owners and chef who cooked us yet another delectable meal under candlelight, despite their electricity being off from the city’s construction. Cafe Titanic has been around for decades and it’s no secret why. I genuinely cannot wait to return.

Lovely staff. Amazing sandwiches cooked fresh. Stumbled across the place with my daughter and we went in for lunch. Host was chatty and friendly. Explained the menu and options and made suggestions. Really nice leave. Will revisit on my return to Montreal

I have used Titanic for catering several times without ever having set a foot in the restaurant itself… Excellent service, Luis E is exceptional and has been able to effortlessly coordinate the catering services for me last minute, sub-24 hours before my lunch-hour presentations. 100% recommend!

Nice & pleasant service by the team serving solid mom-pop inspired food !! Choose the chicken burrito for take-away. Definitely recommend for a lunch pit stop!

Google
I came here because it was recommended by Lonely Planet. I tried their sandwich (forgot what it's called)... I couldn't continue the second half. Sorry, but a subway sandwich tastes better than this. I don't understand the hype. Their menu didn't even reflect some of the food uploaded in the reviews. To be fair, everyone working here was pleasant and friendly. I just didn't like the food.

Google
Wonderful, local cafe for a warm sandwich. Homemade cake with orange and pomegranate syrup, similar to a coffee cake. A few bottles of wine available. Great ambiance; electric decour. Not too loud or too quiet; perfect for hanging out with a friend. The paninis are forgettable, but the service is friendly and prompt. Perfect spot to feel like a local.

Google
I just noticed this place close to my work recently and decided to give it a try since I saw they have tacos. The service was good, no complaints there, the food came fast. BUT as soon as I saw the tacos I was not hopeful I would like them. The meat (pork) looked very chunky and fatty and looks like it was boiled. I've never seen carrots and zucchini on a taco either. They did indeed taste very bad, liikely the worst tacos I've had and I have had my fair share of tacos. I gave up after a few bites and left. Since I am diabetic and had already given myself insulin for the meal I only have limited time to eat something before my blood sugar crashes. As there was a lineup when I left I didn't have time to give my opinion in person and had to go find somewhere else to eat. I really wanted to like this place but I have to be honest. It may well be that other dishes are better but I can NOT recommend the tacos.

Yelp
The best grilled cheese sandwich I've had in my life! They are also very nice and helpful

Yelp
Updating my previous review to say I still love this place! I was super glad when they finally reopened after the first lockdown. The menu was understandably a bit reduced, but all of the sandwiches were still top notch and everyone there was still super nice. They also introduced tacos which I LOVE. I've gotten the carnitas tacos several times and my friend loves the fried chicken ones. The flavors are great and the portion is super generous. The carnitas come with cheese, lots of pickled vegetables and a tasty salsa. I wish I lived closer to Cafe Titanic so I could keep going for lunch while I work from home. Also looking forward to when my company can do events and get catering from them again. They do great sandwich trays!

Yelp
GOOD PLACE TO GRAB A SANDWICH IN MONTREAL =========================================== My son, husband and I popped in for a couple sandwiches at the beginning of August, 2019. FOOD: 5/5 STARS =============== My husband and I split the caprese sandwich and we liked that a lot. I can't remember what my son ordered, but he ate every last bite. SERVICE: 3/5 STARS ================== You basically order at the counter and they bring the food to you. AMBIANCE: 3/5 STARS =================== It's a cute place. See my photos. I'd go back again.

Yelp
What a lovely spot and such a great vibe! I Hadn't been to Titanic in over a year... definitely a great lunch option in the old port. Today, I had their butternut squash soup and a vegan sandwich. The soup really hit the spot on a day like today. The sandwich was also good. I felt satisfied after my meal. My friend had the Mac and cheese dish and was very satisfied. Prices are reasonable for old port and the staff is really nice. They're also great for catering in case you were wondering :-) If you plan on visiting, make sure to come during the week as I believe they are closed on weekends. Avoid coming exactly at noon as it usually is very busy.

Yelp
Amazing cafe, tucked away on St Pierre near St Paul and near all the touristy sites in Old Montreal. Great sandwiches, excellent service,a nd really good coffee. One of the best cortados I've had in the city, period. Only gripe is they aren't open on weekends and they close very early like 3 or 4 pm so that kinda sucks but for a daytime spot this is one of my fav in Old MTL.

Yelp
Nice lunch spot with fast and thoughtful service. Cool decor. A variety of sandwich selections but especially liked the pot du chocolate

Yelp
Great place for lunch, they have a big selection of salads and oh boy they are good. I love the disco ball idea, the ambiance is great and so is service. I'm definitely looking forward to going there for lunch again.

Yelp
Let me start by saying the food here is great! This is another lovely little place hidden away in Old Montreal. If you didn't know it was there odds are you would walk right by never knowing what gastronomic treasures could be found within. Titanic Cafe is tucked in a corner, in the basement of a nondescript building in old Montreal. Don't let the location dissuade you from walking down the 4 steps that lead to the remarkably bright cafe. You have to keep in mind that there is no table service at this cafe you'll have to stand in line cafeteria style to make you choice from the menu that changes every day. Once you get to the end of the line you get to pay the usual old Montreal surcharge, but I will say in this case it's worth every penny. I've had the pleasure of eating here four or five time in the last year and I've never had anything that wasn't made with fresh seasonal ingredients and that didn't taste incredible. If you find yourself in old Montreal and looking for a good place to stop in for lunch Cafe Titanic should be near the top of your list. I hope you enjoy.

Yelp
* Great little sandwich cafe * What a pleasant find. This little cafe offers some lovely sandwiches. I had the BBQ chicken sandwich which had a truly tender breast of chicken which had a nicely caramelized crust, and was loaded with grilled veggies (pepper, zuke, etc.). It would be impossible to put this sandwich in your mouth (even with a big mouth like mine). But it wasn't just large. It was extremely tasty. What a wonderful combo! I also saw a pork chop sandwich which was served with the bone still in! Interesting idea! We need more sandwich shops like this in the world!

Yelp
Tucked inside a small alley in old Montreal close to the Notre Dame Basilica is this gem. The culinary team of Patrick, Fabian, Sam, Jay, Juan & Evanivaldo get really creative with their sandwiches. A soup-sandwich combo will cost you approximately 18 bucks including the taxes. Yes it does sound a bit more for everyday lunch, but the sandwiches are huge and the ingredients are really fresh not to mention incredibly yummy. This place gets really busy during lunch. They have around 10 tables, a communal table & a diner style communal table. Definitely worth a visit. Food - Good Service - Freindly Ambiance - Cosy Worth the money - Yes

Yelp
The food is delicious and the portions are big. It has a cozy feel to it and the staff were friendly. I will definitely visit again if I go back to Montreal.

Yelp
I have been coming here since years and it remains one of my favourites in the area. Casual, real food, great service and fast for a business lunch.

Yelp
This little place is fantastic. I got a great big sandwich, coffee, a creative pasta salad side. I loved its basement feel... quaint and great stuff.

Yelp
Bad experience here. Cute place and have gone here plenty of times but since Sam is not the manager anymore, the food and service has been getting worse and worse. The prices are high for what they give you but the quality is hardly better than any corner sandwich place. I had the three cheese pasta and it was OK but kind of bland. It's the last time I go here.

Yelp
We came across this great find while actually looking for another restaurant in Old Montreal.. And glad we did. The service is friendly and food was very good. I had the soup and mini sandwich combo.. Delicious gazpacho and a brie with pesto sandwich. My husband had a wonderful smoked salmon sandwich on a baguette.

Yelp
It's just my favorite lunch spot in Old Port. All of Old Port is a little pricey but the portions here are big and everything is always delicious. The people working here are super friendly, very aware of their repeat clientele, and attentive. The atmosphere is boho chic and attracts a smart crowd.

Yelp
I always wanted to try this cafe, which is right beside my workplace. I definitely recommend it. The restaurant is tucked in the basement of an old building but there is still plenty of natural lighting. The decor is not spectacular but very cozy. Now on to the food. The food is served cafeteria style: you pick up a tray and your utensils. Plates of delicious sandwiches are laid out on the counter. The combinations of flavors is very interesting. I had a smoked salmon sandwich with grilled veggies. Excellent! The star of the sandwich was definitely the bread. light, fluffy and fresh! Definitely recommended!

Yelp
Good BBQ chicken sandwich. The specials are always interesting and tasty.

Mary M.

Yelp
Wonderful place! Creative sandwiches, friendly staff. The sandwiches are huge, so consider sharing.

John S.

Yelp
Very disappointing. I have been coming here for 20 years but the last 6 months the quality has dropped like a stone. The sandwich Roma - my favourite - I couldn't finish: stale bread, no taste...what happened??

PlugTurret M.

Yelp
I was starving and wandering around without a clue where I was and I found here the best sandwich (tomato, brie, pesto, brocolli on wonderful baguette, save half for later!) and the best coffee (served with a lovely macaron and a shot of soda water).
