Cafe Wijs / Hofje van Wijs

Comfortable cosy place with little nice courtyard. Nice atmosphere. A suitable place on tourists routs to relax . Delicious pancakes.

Went there for dinner. The homemade mushroom soup was good. Afterwards we had to wait one hour for our main dish, whose quality had a bad relation to its price. Burger buns were bone hard, meat and fries were overcooked. The staff was friendly, but not well organized and in my opinion not professional. After criticizing the main dishes constructively, we were told that there would be found a solution for that, afterwards we got the bill in full height and no further actions were made. Sadly, I cannot recommend this place at all.

Great spot for tea and coffee, went in expecting a low profile teahouse but ended up having 2 delicious beers I hadn't seen before and having a burger. Cool atmosphere both outside and inside. Great prices and great location so close to the city center!

Became a tourist trap. This used to be a great tea room. Now: sticky menu's with tourist sandwiches, no sugar on the tables, no spoon. Had to ask and ask. Staff really doesn't know what they're doing. Around €5 for a tea is really really expensive...

Staff was thoroughly confused and had no idea about the menu. Order had to change 3 times because items were not available. Ordered sweet pankakes and received a sweet cake that did not have the advertised ingredients let alone it was not a pankake. By now thoroughly starved we decided to eat the cake. Turns out it was at least 2 days old and watery. It looked the same way it came out as it got in.

TL-DR : we paid 40 EUROS for an 3 hours delay, uncooked 1-course meal. Started very nicely, cosy atmosphere, hidden/remote from the agitation, got a table immediately... But then we had to ask twice for the drinks menu (which, you know considering that at the time there was only one other table busy was a bit weird, but we were not phased). Then we decided to have something to eat as well (it was 8pm, and when we arrived we specifically said we would like to have a drink and then eat). We were brought the menus for food by a wiatress - and then after 10 minute another lady/waitress came to tell us the kitchen had closed. We were surprised, but decided to just finish our drinks and go somewhere else. Then, half an hour or so later someone else came to tell us the kitchen reopened!!! So we placed our order for two different types of fondue. Over an hour later (!!!!!!!) a man who seemed to be the manager came to us to tell us that one of the fondue we ordered (over an hour ago), was not available, so we change our order to get what was available. You would think that this was the result of a very busy time at the restaurant, but it was so quite (only 2 tables including ours were busy), that the whole staff team was actually enjoying their own diner in the same room... Our food came about 3 minutes later... And it wasn't cooked - we were so astonished that we even asked the people at the table next to ours (who also ordered the fondue) to check and confirm that the wine in the fondue had not been cooked, hence it tasted like a horrible and very alcoholic wine soup. I then told the man/manager - who proceeded to HAVE A TASTE IN MY PLATE. Then told us he "wasn't sure" and had to "check with the chef". He took my plate away to the kitchen (but not my friends' although we had the same dish), came back to confirm that indeed, it had not been cooked, and that it will come back in a few minutes. At this stage, they brought us a couple of free beers - but we already had a couple and really couldn't care less about more beers. And then all of the staf disappeared, leaving us completely alone... The food finally came, and was cooked, but by this time, we were really discouraged / disguted and had lost our appetite (who would have guessed, after three hours...). The best part was the bill... they still charged us for the food, and gave us a ridiculous rebate, so we still ended up paying 40 EUROS for an 3 hours delay, uncooked 1-course meal. The level of unprofesionnalism and plain rudeness was just amazing - especially considering the fact that there were a bunch of staff, and only two tables busy...

Most disappointing coffee roaster. The shopkeeper does not even know how to grind beans for French press, nor bothers to figure it out ("I can't understand this grinder because the labels are in Dutch so tell me yourselves how to do it". Seriously!). I bought tea in the past and tasted really old. Cute place but poorly managed.

Great pancakes and my husband said the BLT was the best he's ever had. Good service. Quiet little quirky place in the middle of busy Amsterdam. Very nice :)
