Italy's Best-kept Coffee Secret Is This Stunning Port City and Its Timeless Cafes

"To learn more, I arranged a chat with Cristina Favento, a travel and food journalist who has researched the history of Trieste’s cafes. We met on the terrace of Caffè degli Specchi, in the Piazza della Unità, a vast seafront square lined with stately 19th-century palazzos. “A hundred years ago, there were four cafes here, and their tables and chairs would have filled up almost the whole piazza,” Favento said. “Everybody wanted a different coffee, so the waiters came up with short names for them, like goccia or capo in b.”" - Taras Grescoe

One of the oldest, if not the oldest cafe in Trieste. It is located on the largest square and has a wonderful view. The service is a bit slower, but that is common in Italy when you come to popular places. The food is the worst - the pasta with tomatoes and gambori is bad, the pasta is store-bought and as if it should have been cooked a little more to be al dente, and the gambori are frozen and you can really feel it in the taste. Prices above the average for Trieste. It's worth coming and having a drink, but not much more than that. Be prepared that if you sit outside, pigeons (mostly) and seagulls will land on chairs and tables and try to take your food, which can be very irritating and unhygienic.

This place is amazing! It brings you back in past, in some better times, with it's interior mostly, than with classic music etc. Stuff is very polite and helpful, and range of coffee and sweets is extremely wide and tasty. Highly recommendation for this place on Triestes central square.

The food was okay. My first impression of the staff wasn’t great because they weren’t very attentive, even though it wasn’t that busy. However, it’s a great spot for an aperitivo outside while watching the sunset, but be careful of pigeons and seagulls, as they might steal your food! I’d definitely like to try their sweets next time!

It was all very nice. From the small pastries to the exquisite coffee accompanied by a tiny cup of dark chocolate. The staff was all the time concerned of our wellbeing and were checking on us very often. The toilet was also well suited for a quick diaper change. Probably during summer it will be very crowded… We were surprised by the normal price there. I thought we will pay 3 times the sum that we paid

One of the best places for an aperitivo in Trieste! Their spritz is exceptional, made with top-quality ingredients and perfectly balanced flavors. The setting is truly special—enjoying a drink in this historic café while overlooking the stunning Piazza Unità d’Italia is an unforgettable experience. Everything here is beautifully branded, adding to the charm, and they even have their own excellent coffee. Prices are slightly higher than in other bars, but they are absolutely justified by the quality, service, and breathtaking view.

Another perfect spot in trieste for aperitif or coffee ! Feeling glam? Get up and come here ☕️ staff are nice and they can speak English too. I always prefer inside sometimes we are outside cuz the location is perfect spot for taking pictures .

“Lovely café in the heart of the square! The coffee was exceptional, the aperitivo was delightful, and the beer selection was great. The seating was very comfortable, offering a beautiful view. The service was excellent, making it the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the atmosphere. Highly recommended!”

How disappointing. We were recommended to this caffe for the best coffee, in the city that is supposed to have invented and perfected coffee. Well I guess for us they just didn’t live up to the hype. The small tray of biscuits was disappointing and not worth the calories. But the service was by far the worst part of the experience. After having a sign which asked you to wait to be seated we were told to sit anywhere. We then had to wait to be served by a waiter that was not familiar with the device he was using and then forgetting half our order and having to be reminded twice for a glass of water. Our tip - treat your customers with a little respect and then perhaps you’ll get a tip!

Yelp
The food was very nice however I think they have more cafe food than lunch and diner but overall it was good. The service was good the staff were very nice and had robots that took care of the dirty dishes and they even can talk to people. The ambience in this area was good and in the center of the town you could easily find it by just walking around greeted by the staff and sometimes the line to enter.

Yelp
It was fun to watch people place along with coffee and a pastry. Seating was available outside and staff was great.

Yelp
While a 'must' visit in Trieste for many it rides on the back of the Piazza itself and prices accordingly. Worth a visit to indulge in the delicious views from the Piazza while sipping a Aperol, although the rest of the offer slightly lacks in terms of quality compared to the opportunity cost of other options. That being understood if you are only in Trieste for a short time I would recommend taking a pause there.

Yelp
Amazing bar in one of the most beautiful squares of Italy! I love to come here with my mum and dad because the atmosphere is so relaxing and reminds me when the city was ruled by the Austrian King loooooooooong time ago ;) Absolutely try the cold chocolate, in a wine glass with a strawberry, how fancy, huh? Because the owner of the bar produce the most amazing chocolate of the region! If you visit during winter of course stop there and try the hot cocoa, so yummy you can't imagine! Both versions come with a small Italian pastry, what do you want more? I do also recommend to try the Italian famous Spritz Aperol (Different in Trieste from other part of Italy!), it comes with sandwiches and olives to eat watching the sunset over the sea.

Yelp
Great location, great views. I can't speak much for the food but this is a great place to enjoy a coffee or aperitivo while people-watching and enjoying the relaxing atmosphere of the piazza.
