Evan Funke Explores Sicily's Foodways

"Caffè Europa is described as a delightfully old-school restaurant with a massive curved glass pastry case and servers dressed in three-piece suits, known as the 'town center in Catania, where people from all walks of life gather'. They serve granita with a variety of flavors, ideally ordered as coffee and almond 'con panna e brioche'." - Khushbu Shah

Caffè Europa is a cozy and lively café in Catania with a wide selection of gelato, pastries, cakes, and croissants. Everything is beautifully displayed at a large counter, and you can either sit inside, on the spacious covered terrace, or at the open-air tables. The staff is friendly and service is fast. You can choose your treat inside or scan the QR code on your table to view the menu. It's also perfect for grabbing something sweet to take home. A great spot for a relaxing break!

I had a chance to have breakfast there. Good ambience and great food. Remember that the cafe is self serviced, so you will pay first then get your food and sit to eat.

One of the best Granita. The place is full of people during midnight. Very wide choices of sweets

I got in the habit of visiting this at the end of my morning run. At that time it is relatively quiet. We did also visit once in the afternoon and it is busy with a wait to be served. It serves a traditional mix of tasty sicilian pastries. Staff in the morning are helpful.

The best cannolo in town and great selection of amazing candies and snacks. Friendly and mindful service. I will come back here each time I am in Catania.

Review from Tourist: At first glance, I wasn’t sure this was the place for me. A sugar-heavy breakfast, no menu in sight, and a very local vibe that felt a little unpolished. But then… I had the croissant. And the cappuccino. Honestly? It was the best croissant I’ve ever tasted — flaky, buttery, warm — and the cappuccino?

On our trip across all Siciliy, we had here in the Cafe Europa the best Arancini ever. Even in Agrigento, where the Arancini originally comes from, they were not as good as here. You have to try the Arancino with "Melanzane e Tomato" (Eggplant and Tomato) and "Pistachio". They're both incredibly good 🤤 You come in, take a photo of what you want and go to the cashier and pay. You will get a receipt and then you go to get your food. A little awkward, but so it is 😅

The service was amazing. The atmosphere was great. The food was even better. The fresh daily pastas were wonderful. The arancini was the best I tasted in Italy. The ragu one was jaw dropping.

Yelp
Stopped here to pick up a quick snack. I had the four cheese orancini and my cousins had mozzarella in corrozza (basically a deep fried grilled ham & cheese sandwich). OMG my arancini was good but theirs was awesome. I would get that next time. The sweets selection was off the chart. I'd love to return in the morning and have a cappuccino and a sweet (or ten!). Highly recommend this place!!

Yelp
This is one of my go to spots for Arancini, or is always busy of you want to dine in, but I'd you want take away ( to go) it is fairly quick. The Arancini are fresh and also tasty in the reheat.

Yelp
The bar is in a central location in Catania, so naturally, it's poppin' with all walks of life. The food/drinks are tasty and will 100% leave you satisfied. This joint epitomizes a classic Italian/Sicilian bar where you order refreshes you, enjoy some people-watching in the city, and then go about your day.

Yelp
camerieri molto rudi, maleducati pretenziosi. Prezzi da svenimento. Il posto poi e' estremamente triste e buio all'interno, si vede che i proprietari non vogliono consumare energia. Sia la granita che la gastronomia lasciavano molto a desiderare

Yelp
In my opinion, one of the finest caffes in the world. The pastries are a true delight and a testament to Sicilian cuisine. I always go here when I'm in Catania, and I will continue to go here the rest of my life, as well as bring my children.
