Italy's Best-kept Coffee Secret Is This Stunning Port City and Its Timeless Cafes

"Today, at least 10 historic cafes remain in Trieste, each with its own distinctive character. The oldest, Caffè Tommaseo, was founded in 1830 as a series of jewel-box rooms adorned with sculpted cherubs and red velvet seating." - Taras Grescoe

We decided to celebrate our anniversary here last week. They welcomed us with a drink and a warm greeting. I had the full course menu. We were speechless from the appetizer to the dessert, the food was excellent. The only downside was the raw tuna on the pasta, which had a slightly odd taste. The place is very elegant, although there was a fly flying around while we were having dinner. The dessert? Absolutely the best! I’ll definitely come back.

Nice restaurant and very elegant. Food portions are small but tasty. Only problem is that they have places for big number of guests and only one unisex toilet.

A top-notch Italian restaurant with fresh ingredients and a cozy atmosphere. The service is excellent, especially Dino, who knows the menu inside out and shared fascinating stories that made the experience even better. The tiramisu was the best I’ve ever had! Highly recommended—we’ll definitely be back!

I just had an incredible experience with the best scallop I've ever tasted! The staff were so kind and attentive, making my time there truly special. I felt so well cared for, and I can't thank you enough for everything. It was a lovely experience. 😊💖

We had the privilege of dining at this most famous restaurant located in Trieste late last year whilst on vacation from Australia. The location, building and interior took you back in time however with a modern outlook as the service and food were exceptional and delicious. The waitresses and waiters were more than happy to give you a history of the restaurant and the menu, wines and food that are predominantly and proudly sourced locally. We had a superb time and we recommend it to anyone visiting this beautiful port city of Trieste in North East Italy.

We came for tiramisu but got inspired to taste octopus salad and seafood risotto too. Don’t have to say one was better than the other. Excellent food, great location and very kind staff. Tiramisu of course exceeded our expectations, so we left very happy. :) Would recommend highly!!

Amazing food. Amazing atmosphere. Amazing service. Food - seafood crudités and cicchetti were very tasty and a good choice to share within a group. Grilled octopus was delicious. Tuna tataki was fabulous and almost melting in mouth (one of the best seafood meals I have ever had). Tiramisu was a great experience. Besides the fact that you can clearly taste the coffee, and hence this dessert being tasty, one of the waiters made it in front of us which delighted our eyes too. Atmosphere - you can feel the history in this place, especially that it is the first café in Trieste and used to be a meeting place for intellectuals. Beautiful historical interior. Service - very professional with big extra (e.g. as mentioned above). The croatian waiter made the whole experience even nicer, he had good suggestions for the food and wine and we had a nice chat (e.g. about the Trieste and the café) thanks to him being well-read. Edit: Visited again - great again!!! Edit 2: Visit again. This time we had San Pietro fish which was one of the best fish meals I have ever had. While all of the waiters were doing great, I want to point out that Dino was excellent - the amount of discussion was on spot (talkative but not too much to be disturbing) and his presentation of tiramisu was amazing.

We had the absolute pleasure of dining at this incredible restaurant during our honeymoon visiting Trieste for the very first time from Ireland and it quickly became one of the standout experiences of our trip. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by maître Loris, whose passion, knowledge, and exceptional recommendations made our evening unforgettable. Loris’s guidance through the menu and wine list was beyond impressive , each dish and pairing elevated our experience to something truly special. We were served by the fantastic Dino- Jo, who were equally attentive, friendly, and professional throughout. The service was flawless warm, genuine, and perfectly paced. The food? Simply the best we’ve had in years. So much so, we came back again during our short stay something we very rarely do on holiday. Every plate was bursting with flavour, beautifully presented, and clearly made with care and expertise. This is more than just a restaurant it’s an experience, made memorable by people who clearly love what they do. Thank you Loris, Dino Jo for making our honeymoon in Trieste even more magical. We’ll be talking about this place for years to come and recommending it to everyone! You must visit when in Trieste. Loris you made our honeymoon dinner so special thank you so much, we can’t wait to plan our next trip in Trieste.

Yelp
Lovely spot for cocktails! We came here twice during our stay for aperitivo. They have a wide range of cocktails, including a great chamomile infused Aperol spritz, as well as some delicious mock-tail options. They also have a yummy a Black Forest cake if you're in the mood for something sweeter!

Yelp
Rating: 78/100 pts On arriving in Trieste, my first inclination was to get a cup of some of their famous Illy coffee which, though widely popular throughout Europe, actually originated in this city. I was informed by a local that Caffe Tommaseo was a good choice. And indeed, it was. Built in 1830, Caffe Tommaseo is officially the oldest extant cafe in Trieste. Upon entering, it took awhile to regain my bearings and focus on what I wanted to eat: the opulent interior is filled with carved wall adornments and regal Habsburgian-furniture that exudes an Austrian-influenced Italian atmosphere. I ordered an espresso and prosciutto sandwich, and a caprese cake for dessert. The espresso came with a side of fresh whipped cream that was divinely silky. The sandwich was satisfying, though far from the best I've had in Italy--overall, the food is just average (though still great by American standards), and prices fine, if a bit overpriced. However, with its convenient location near the port, stunning interior, and historical value, I still consider Caffe Tommaseo a great stop for sipping on some coffee and taking a moment to feel like a noble.

Yelp
Such a restful place for coffee and snacks in a beautiful environment. This is the first place you should visit when arriving in Trieste. They offer cocktails, coffee and delicious snacks like tarralli and olives.

Yelp
Historical and beautiful bar near the seaside. Great place to have coffee and desserts. Great cheesecakes and sacher torte. Never really tried dining here, but i figured it's not the place to eat a whole meal, it's just a bar.

Yelp
As a tourist visiting Trieste and after reading a few reviews, we decided to eat at this restaurant. I was really disappointed with the quality of the food. The vegetables were soggy and over cooked. The soup of the day was salty and not good. The rest of the meals were disappointing. The service people were nice, The old style setting was quaint. This restaurant is still popular due to its history and location. Probably find another venue to experience dining in Trieste.

Yelp
We had the "degustation menu", which has 4 courses. Overall it was very good and we enjoyed to eat things we probably wouldn't order otherwise. The food was delicious, however it was just too much. The third course was some pasta dish, that was super filling and so we could not really enjoy the fish plate we were served afterwards. The white wine (from collio) was great. Staff was super friendly and helpful. If you order drinks, you get olives and salted peanuts with it.

Yelp
In the 19th century and early days of the 20th century, this was the place to be seen in Trieste. Many of Austria's, Italy's, and Europe's most famous people have walked through Caffe Tommaseo's doors. Well so do I whenever I am in Trieste but today the buzz is lacking and there are often too many open tables. Still there's the atmosphere and tradition and the convenient location right in the heart of the historic Trieste waterfront. One thing they are known for these days is a terrific eponymous aperitif cocktail they make in the summer. On a hot day the combination of gin, aperol, and grapefruit perfectly hits the spot!!
