Neither of us slept a wink last night but the biscuit at Cahawba House singlehandedly turned our morning around.

I forgot to post what my husband had got because I was so hungry but my food was pretty good just needed some seasoning. The staff was nice and friendly, only thing that threw it off was the menu wasn't updated. They had food on there that they weren't even making or serving but it's a nice place to go for a early breakfast/brunch. Low-key expensive as well

Google
(Sunday Brunch) It seemed like they were understaffed for the day. Nice waitress but it just felt like she was having to do a lot & couldn’t check up on patrons. We received our food about 12 mins after ordering. It was mid. The best thing on my plate was the biscuit. It wasn’t bad but the menu said “southern” and I was expecting more flavor. The music playlist was good too but we won’t be back.

Had a perfect breakfast here while on our way to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice. Perfect, soft, fluffy eggs, deeply crisp bacon and a drop biscuit as good as any I’ve ever eaten, including my Aunt Anita’s! Coffee was also excellent - smooth, mild and frequently topped off. Had chicken and waffles the day before - way more food than I could eat at lunch but unbelievably tender and juicy. Add a biscuit and get the Bramble Jam - yum!!! At the moment they are open only on Saturday and Sunday but definitely worth a visit, maybe even both days!

Google
Excellent Sunday brunch. We were immediately greeted and had the chance to sit outside on beautiful April afternoon. Unique flavors of mimosas were available. The shrimp and grits and chicken and the egg biscuit where our choices and delicious!

Google
We were immediately greeted when we entered. You order at the counter. Food was brought out very quickly. The shrimp and grits is a must for brunch. Biscuits and gravy were just okay in my opinion. Coffee wasn't great, but it was hot and had caffeine. Chicken and waffles were average. The waffle was similar in consistency to Waffle House. Staff recommended the shrimp and grits, chicken and waffle, and the smash burger. We did not try the burger. Overall, the food was good, but not great. The service was good and we enjoyed our meal.

Google
This is a cute little place with great atmosphere. We didn't dine in, but it looked like a great place to do so. The food? Delicious. Took one star from the food score because the macaroni tasted a little bland to me, but my husband liked it. So I guess give it a shot. I had the catfish, hush puppies, mac, and fried green tomatoes (which were INCREDIBLE). Even tasted good as leftovers. Highly recommend.

Google
Delightful small business. Not too busy until the weekend brunch menu on Saturdays and Sundays, I hear. It was a great, quiet place for lunch. The food was delicious, the service was quick and cheerful, and the cook came out to thank us for coming. Will definitely be going back for brunch another day!

Google
Looks like the restaurant is under new management. Food was not seasoned and overpriced. I had the breakfast plate with pancake. Bacon was entirely greasy. I’ve never seen a pancake look like that and the batter was bland and consistency was off. My husband got the chicken and waffle. Chicken needed to be seasoned, batter was bland and waffle could have been thicker/fluffier. We left underwhelmed. Do not plan on returning.

Yelp
On the way from New Orleans to Fairhope, hubby and I took a detour to Montgomery to go to a museum and have a quick bite to eat. Cahawba House seemed like a quaint little place to pop in, but my husband needed some fried chicken like nobody's business (a daily occurrence, I assure you). So we both had chicken. He, the fried bone-in, and me, the strips. We both enjoyed. I think I liked mine better than hubby liked his. My strips were large, hand battered pieces and pretty flavorful. The house cut fries were good, but not the best I've ever had. I lovvvve hand cut fries, but these had almost no color on them. I mean, they were fine but could have been better. We did enjoy the biscuit, and the hushpuppies with the vanilla bourbon jam was fantastic. We could've eaten those little nuggets like candy. We had great service, and the atmosphere was rather nice. Cafe-y, casual, and clean. We would definitely go back if we were locals. Happy we stopped!

Yelp
Came here for brunch this week. It was a very cute cafe but just average in my opinion. I had the chicken and the egg sandwich, and my friends had the smash burger and bama breakfast bowl. All of our food was severely under seasoned. More salt and seasoning was needed. I initially ordered the shrimp and grits but they were out of it. It was about 2 hours before closing when we came in. The staff was very friendly and the mimosas were great; they were generous with the champagne! I did not get a picture of the bama bowl. Not the best brunch I've had, but not terrible either.

Yelp
I'd just flown into town and we were looking for breakfast. We found this place near downtown Montgomery. There was a small crowd there when we entered but it really began filling up while we were there. The restaurant offers breakfast entrees, sandwiches, and lunch items. The specials on the day that we went included smothered chicken and a funnel cake waffle. When I saw that, I assumed it was a twist on chicken and waffles. But, the lady at the cash register explained to me that those were two separate things. We ended up trying the smothered chicken and we got an order of chicken and waffles from the regular menu. The food came out quickly. The smothered chicken was a meat and two plate and okra and breakfast potatoes were the chosen sides. The waffle was cool and very dry. The fried chicken tenders were hot and juicy but they had absolutely no seasoning on them. I ended up eating one tender and half of the waffle before stopping. The smothered chicken didn't appear to be very "smothered". It also lacked seasoning along with the okra and home fries. The chicken tenders, okra, and home fries were all cooked well. This is a place where you pick up the menu, order at the counter, take a number, and find a table. The dining area is small but charming. We were hoping for really good food based on the reviews but it was still nice to try this place.

Yelp
We came on a Sunday and restaurant was extremely understaffed. Paid $80 for two adults, two kids meals and waited at least 30 mins for our food to come out. When it arrived, my "All American Breakfast" was the same portion as the ($9!!) kids plate. During the long wait, I was so hopeful the quality of the food would make up for it all. No such luck. Eggs were not freshly scrambled, bacon likely microwaved and waffles and fries were pre-frozen. The table next to us needed to be bussed when we walked in, and it wasn't bussed when we left. Do not waste your money, go to Waffle House for better food and better service.

Yelp
Jelly is not free!!!! Or you have a dry biscuit They should at least have free jelly of a cheap brand or something. Just crazy!!! Wait staff is amazing Food is good

Yelp
My day wasn't going as expected so I stopped here for a quick breakfast while in the area. This quaint spot cheered me up! I had a potato egg plate which was almost perfect. Great coffee, great music (a lot of Motown) and the guy that helped me was very sweet and took excellent care of me. I picked up some preserves to take home too. There is metered parking out front that only takes coins so bring a few quarters. The Rosa Parks museum is just around the corner so this is a perfect place to grab a bite while you are in the area.

Donovan B.

Yelp
Overall not very good. I had the breakfast sampler with eggs bacon and a biscuit. I feel like anyone could probably make a better tasting eggs and bacon at their own house for cheaper. Workers were nice but wouldn't return.

Yelp
Incredibly disappointing for the height that they give this place the meatloaf wasn't very good it was bland the hamburger steak was actually cold and dry with a white like non-flavorful gravy on top of it the french fries would've been great if they've been at least warm they were not they were called and the fried green tomatoes actually were pretty good but any place that gives you catchup packets to put on your french fries is not worth your time effort or money pass on this place for evermore quote the Raven

Teresa J.

Yelp
The food tastes worse going down than it did coming back up. Absolutely disgusting. This is not southern food. The biscuits were like hockey pucks. The one thing Montgomery is know for and they managed to screw that up. Don't be fooled by the appetizing image on line. YOU ARE BETTER OFF EATING AT HOME. Ending this now because I don't want to get started on the grits. When it comes to grits they should not try it. Putting cheese on them would have added another 15 minutes to an order time that was already over by 30. Thank goodness I said no cheese. Nothing could save those grits. Unless you ran out of wallpaper paste, that is the only reason to order grits from this place. #eat at home # we got food at home

Yelp
Great spot for southern fixings and comfort food. The service is super friendly and the food is good. I ordered the fried catfish and the broccoli cheddar casserole. The fried catfish was good, but the casserole was out of this world. Absolutely recommend it as a side. The biscuits were super tasty as well, and a must. But, by far, the absolute best thing on this menu was the banana pudding - you have to get it!!! Such a perfectly tasty dessert and the most fabulous thing here, although I doubt you could go wrong with any item on the menu.

Yelp
We are here last year for lunch and it was pretty good. Brought my daughter in for breakfast today and it was pretty lackluster. Not bad, just not great. Side note:The potato bowl (hash browns) were pretty much dry and out of a bag. My daughters eggs and grits were pretty good though. I qq

Yelp
Passing through for business and met a chick on Tinder. Quickly checking Yelp for a place to meet for brunch I came across this recommendation. Met Sunday at 9:30. The downtown area was quiet Parking was easy Ordering was simple The outdoor seating on a beautiful morning combined with the above made a great first date. I had the loaded breakfast bowl and she had the shrimp n grits. Both were very good. Great experience overall!

Marquett K.

Yelp
The food was amazing the ambiance is quaint country kitchen style and the employees were personable and friendly. I ordered the southern breakfast sandwich with pimiento cheese, fried green tomatoes and bacon. My friend ordered the shrimp and grits! The biscuit was light and flavorful. The fried green tomato complimented the sandwich perfectly. I wanted more!! The shrimp and grits was good. I only have a picture of the shrimp and grits.

Yelp
Walked by on a Saturday morning, noticed the umbrellas and realized I was hungry for a good southern breakfast. And, this was the spot. Ordered the fried fish and scrambled egg sandwich on a biscuit with a side of cheesy grits. Could. Not. Have been happier. A kind waitress kept my coffee filled and hot. And the general vibe of the place was all local and just perfect. Couldn't believe how lucky i was to stumble across it.

Yelp
Cahawba was able to accommodate our large group without issues. The food was amazing and the staff is friendly.

Yelp
By the time our party of three arrived on a Sunday night within an hour of closing, the majority of menu items were gone, which was kind of a bummer, and I'm not sure that I'll visit Montgomery again to try it when it's not so busy (but definitely would if I could). The staff was incredibly nice and apologetic. A large, unanticipated group had just come through, and it was just the friendly woman at the register and the cook. I had the fried catfish, fried okra, and mac and cheese. The fish was a little dry. Really wish I could have had the fried chicken, as planned :-(
google avatar

Yelp
Small quaint spot in downtown Montgomery. Friendly staff. The food was really good! It was busy but that might have been due to ASU homecoming. There were lots of locals popping in and leaving disappointed because of the crowd. There is indoor and outdoor seating.

Laura S.

Yelp
We were so happy to see they were open this Sunday morning and came by early. At first we were not sure if they were open but they were and SO worth it. Friendly staff with very good food and healthy portions. The menu looks amazing and worth coming back.

Yelp
Food looked and smelled great but I'll never know. I stood in line for 15 minutes. When I got to the register to order the cashier told me they were too busy and that they stopped taking orders so the kitchen could catch up. I asked when they were going to start taking orders again and she said about 20 minutes. Ridiculous! There are lots of restaurants going out of business because with everyone working from home and not going into the city they can't get enough business and these nitwits are turning customers away. The place didn't even seem that busy. There were four or five tables with people outside and about three inside. I've worked in a restaurant before and I was never allowed to stop the orders when I got "too busy". Food looked and smelled delicious. Oh well!

Robert J.

Yelp
Quaint breakfast/brunch place. Owners actually working and very friendly. Good food at a reasonable price! And locally owned.

Yelp
Woah. The pimento grilled cheese is out of this world. It will make your belly so happy. Everything on the menu sounded so delicious, I wanted to try it all. I settled on that pimento grilled cheese and I'm so happy I did. It's REALLY cheesy y'all. So if you're not a big cheese fan, get out. JK, just order something else. But also, get out of here. They have some sauces that you can add to the side for fry dipping, which I am always a fan of. I chose the mama's sauce and the garlic aioli. Both were great. Definitely make your way here if you're looking for a delicious meal!

Ben H.

Yelp
Fantastic atmosphere. Friendly courteous staff. Gave us the correct pronunciation and Told us the story how they chose the name and the history which was very cool. Food was outstanding and drink selection was great. Definitely on our list to visit again on our next trip to Montgomery.

Yelp
The restaurant was great just the place and dish's needed to be upgraded. Plus side parking free on weekends

Yelp
Cozy feeling and friendly customer service. Military friendly environment. I will be back.

Yelp
We waited a really long time for the food and everything came out cold. The lady said they were training some staff in the kitchen? Why would you do that when your restaurant is so busy!
google avatar

Sharon R.

Yelp
Do not miss this place! The restaurant is charming and casual. The staff is friendly and glad to see you. And the food is delicious. I only wish we had found it earlier in our trip. We were a party of four and ordered a variety of breakfast items. All were delicious. My husband ordered something more complicated and special. The chef prepared it perfectly and even came out to check and see if he liked it. If you are in the area check this place out.

Yelp
If you're looking for a small friendly environment with great food, Cahawba House is definitely the place to go! I had the the Loaded Breakfast Potatoes. It was delicious everything was fresh and the meal wasn't too heavy. They have a lot of options and you can customize your own meal if you want. I definitely recommend this place!

Yelp
Great breakfast/brunch/lunch spot! This is a great no-frills eatery in downtown Montgomery. The menu is simple and customisable - and we loved that the breakfast menu items were available all day. The staff were friendly and the prices were reasonable. We highly recommend the biscuits and the beignets!
google avatar

Amy H.

Yelp
Great food, very friendly service! I got a loaded potato brunch bowl, and it was more food than I could eat. Next time I'll save room for a homemade dessert.

Yelp
Food was very good! The staff was very attentive and respectful. The interior of the restaurant is very warm and cozy, and the music choice is nice.

Yelp
You order in line but food is brought to your table. Excellent food. Love the meatloaf. Good salads and burgers. Casual ambiance. Outdoor seating is nice weather permitting. Wonderful biscuits.

Yelp
The food here is delicious, the service here is outstanding and the ambience is friendly. It's a great place I just wish they were open more and more consistently carried the catfish.

Yelp
Amazing experience, great service, great food, inexpensive menu. Got the chicken Mac and cheese and greens. And great food. Loved every bit.

Yelp
It the best breakfast you can have. The only problem is that figuring out when they are open. But when they are, they are worth it. Very good lunch as well. Very friendly staff and

Yelp

Yelp
My daughter and I were traveling up to Nashville when we started searching for breakfast and found this location. As we approached to go inside, three gentlemen we're outside and I politely asked them what they had and all three of them resounded quickly,"... whatever you get make sure it has biscuits." Well I got the biscuits and gravy and I forget exactly what my daughter had because once I had a bite of the biscuits my mind was gone. They truly are mind-blowing! So I will reiterate what those three gentlemen told me, when you go here, and you should, make sure that you get some biscuits!
google avatar

Youngchai S.

Yelp
Best biscuits I've had in Montgomery. Very soft, doesnt smell like baking powder. Their fried green tomatoes were delicious as well. The batter was more crunchy than crumbly - different, but good. The space inside is quite small, and it is packed. They seem to have outdoor seating available as well, but the day I went it rained so people were not able to sit outside. Service is a tad slow. They also forgot all our jam/spread orders. We had to catch someone and ask her for our spreads. On my next visit I would definitely want to try some of their lunch items.
google avatar

Julio M.

Yelp
Food was great and reasonably priced. And the staff were especially nice and helpful. Highly recommended.

Max C.

Yelp
Stopped in from Mobile, Food was excellent, menu is simple but perfect. Staff were so nice and friendly! Will come back next time we are in town!

Jessica D.

Yelp
Great service and food! Beautiful views of downtown with outdoor seating. We got the shrimp and grits and it was wonderful
google avatar

Curtis Y.

Yelp
The atmosphere was great and service was good. But from there it takes a downward turn... most of my family had the smothered pig (great concept) but biscuit and gravy was cold. Youngest has loaded potatoes w/ over easy eggs. Eggs were not all that done. The Bama Bona Fide biscuits looks like a regular sized biscuits. Overall, this place won't make my saved bookmarks!

Yelp
Chicken and waffles. Dry waffles and dry chicken and spent $18 for it. I was actually surprised about the good reviews and quality of the food. Jelly is good but that's about it.

Stella S.

Yelp
We stopped by this morning to have brunch around 10 this morning. Parking: Ample street parking when we went but it wasn't busy at the time. There is always parking around downtown if the curbside parking is full. Decor: The restaurant is clean and cozy and they have a giant cool chalkboard to indicate how to order. It's not super large inside. It felt like an old time diner in a good way. Food: Excellent! My husband had the chicken and waffles. I had the All-American breakfast with the blackberry jam. The plates are deceiving - they looks small but there's a lot of food on them. Those waffles are killer! I can see why this is a popular dish. The biscuit that came with my breakfast was great too and the jam was wonderful. Bacon was firm and crispy and a generous portion. I always judge breakfast places by how they cook their bacon. This is a winner. Service: You pay at the counter so it's not your typical sit-and-serve. The cashier was friendly. The food came out very fast. We'll definitely come back.

Yelp
12/29/19 Had a lovely brunch earlier today. A young lady greeted me at the door and handed me a menu to choose what I would like. The lady at the cashier was also very helpful.I ordered the meat loaf with a side of mashed potatoes and requested the gravy on the side. Also requested collard greens. And a soft drink. My food was brought to my table exactly as I had requested, when it was ready. It was fresh and delicious. I enjoyed the iced tea as well. Initially I had unsweet tea. For my refill I mixed a little sweet tea with the unsweet tea. That tasted better LOL. Overall this is a lovely Southern Café in the downtown Montgomery district. Prices are reasonable.Highly recommend

Heather M.

Yelp
My family went to eat here this morning. It took over an hour to get our food and all of our food was cold. The chicken and bacon was way overcooked and also cold. It was a very disappointing experience.

Yelp
Packed for brunch on a Saturday--even though later in the day--attentive, smiling, hipster kids keeping up with orders, and overall good food. Nothing was ground-breaking but overall traditional and authentic Southern cuisine. What really makes this place so beloved I think is the atmosphere--everything from the homey setting in rather small quarters to the happy and helpful staff to the unsweet tea being labeled "ain't sweet". It's just all very welcoming and inviting. I had fried chicken, green bean casserole, and mac n' cheese and all was pretty good--not the finest fried chicken ever, but good all the same. There's no doubt there is a lot of heart behind this place and it shows. Certainly a great choice for lunch or any time they're open if in downtown Montgomery.
