This Is the UK's Largest National Park—How to Visit

"A guided hill‑walk experience led by expert herders that takes groups 30–40 minutes across rough ground to find and feed Britain’s only free‑ranging reindeer; participants should wear supportive boots and can feed the animals by hand and photograph them in their natural sub‑arctic habitat." - Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel is a writer with more than eight years of experience editing and writing for both brands and online publications—with a particular focus on travel, fashion, and lifestyle. 10 Ethical Animal Places to Visit in 2019

"Despite what Santa may have led you to believe, you don’t have to head to the North Pole or wait until Christmas to spot reindeer. An entire herd of these charismatic antlered beasts roams within Scotland. In the Cairngorm Mountains, you’ll find the United Kingdom’s only herd of free-range reindeer. Currently, about 150 of the hooved creatures call the rugged mountains home. They aren’t wild by any means—quite a few of them are put to work making public appearances or pulling sleighs during the holiday season—but they are allowed to wander as they wish within a 10,000-acre chunk of land. Reindeer once lived in the U.K., but the last wild ones disappeared about 800 years ago. In 1952, a Lappish man from northern Sweden named Mikel Utsi and his wife Dr. Ethel John Lindgren shipped a small group of reindeer over from Sweden to reintroduce the animals to the country. They chose to establish the herd in the Cairngorms, as the area’s unusual subarctic climate made it the only suitable place in the U.K. Their ecological experiment was a success. The reindeer have thrived in the often windy, dismal climate. They spend their days strolling around the hillsides, pausing to munch on a seemingly endless natural buffet of grass, birch leaves, and lichen (their feed is supplemented with grain, too). Because the reindeer are allowed to cover so much ground, it can actually be a bit hard to track them down at times. But pop in for a visit at the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre, and you’ll be able to meet a handful of friendly reindeer hanging out in one of the paddocks, waiting to greet curious visitors. The center also houses a tiny shop stuffed with a trove of reindeer-related trinkets." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Fabulous experience doing the hill walk and meeting 35 reindeer up close. Our guides Beni and Maisey were super knowledgeable and friendly. We visited on a gorgeous July day, so the walk was pretty easy and mostly dry. You must be comfortable with lots of trail stairs (made of rocks), but otherwise not very strenuous. This was one of the highlights of our Scotland visit.

We had a great time seeing and learning about these majestic creatures. The hill hike was very manageable for my 7 and 9 year old. They enjoyed spending time up close with the reindeers, including the hand feeding experience.

The best thing to do in Cairngorm! We absolutely loved trekking reindeers which were so adorable! We didn't even have to go too far to meet the reindeers. We saw a newborn calf and a week old calf which wasn't even scared of us. All of the reindeers were super sweet with their small size and oh god, how quiet and gentle they were... we could feed them but there was strictly no touching since they don't like it. Which was extremely hard cause it seems kind of natural to just pet such a beautiful and gentle animal which is curious what you have in your hand. We got plenty of photographs and could freely walk amongst them to get a maximum of the whole "activity". I strongly recommend this to everyone, even to children but bring waterproof clothes and preferably hiking boots since you will "hike" a bit and walk on a wet grass. Also, it's better to buy tickets at least 1 day before. You can do it at the Cairngorm Herd centre (which has also nice souvenirs) or buy it online.

After finding out about the hill walk with the Caringorm Herd, I knew I just had to try it out. Not only is the fee going to a GREAT cause it is a fun, educational, and fully immersive experience. The guides were exceptional in their knowledge and customer service with leading a rather large group. The history of the reintroduction of reindeer to Sctoland is amazing and such an amazing thing to happen for the area. Reindeer are beautiful and calm animals, and it was so lovely to get up close and be able to feed one. I highly recommend the hill trip, and if you feel so inclined, you should help them out a bit more by becoming a sponsor or "adopting" the herd or a specific reindeer of your choosing. Should I find myself back in Scotland, I will be back! Please note: the reindeer in my photos are shedding their winter coats. They are not sickly. That's just the natural process of going from winter to summer months.

We went late in the day so missed the times to go up into the hills. But there were 4 in the paddock. Cost low to see them. Staff extremely helpful. More than happy to confidently answer my kids questions. Will deffinatly go back another time to do the hill excursion.

A Magical Surprise – Do Not Miss the Cairngorm Reindeer Herd! Visiting the Cairngorm Reindeer Herd was a last-minute addition to our Scotland adventure, and we are incredibly glad that it was. We learned about the herd from a wonderful couple we met at our B&B, and this unexpected recommendation turned into one of the most magical and memorable parts of our entire trip. Our guides were knowledgeable, welcoming, and passionate advocates for the herd. They shared fascinating stories about the reindeer roaming near Balmoral and across the Scottish countryside. It was clear that they deeply care about the animals and the important work being done to ensure the herd continues to thrive. Meeting the reindeer up close and learning about their history and behavior was a truly special experience. The entire visit was well-organized, educational, and enjoyable. It was perfect for anyone who appreciates wildlife, conservation, and connecting with the natural world in a meaningful way. If you are anywhere near the Cairngorms during your time in Scotland, I strongly encourage you to take the opportunity to visit the herd. It is an incredible experience that adds a unique and heartwarming chapter to any Scottish adventure.

We had a wonderful time visiting the Cairngorm Reindeer Herd! About 5 to 6 reindeer were kept in a well-maintained enclosure, making it easy and safe for kids to see these beautiful animals up close. There was also a fun Easter quiz where the kids had a great time collecting clues and solving puzzles — it definitely added to the excitement! While the entry fee felt a little on the higher side, it was absolutely worth it, especially for those who might not be able to hike up the mountains to see the reindeer roaming freely. A lovely experience overall, and the smiles on the kids' faces made it even better!
