This National Park Has a Royal-favorite Castle, Whisky Distilleries, and a 90-mile Scenic Drive

"On a guided hill walk with the Cairngorm Reindeer Herd you head out across rough ground for about 30–40 minutes to find the animals, and you can feed the reindeer directly from your hand and take photos; wear supportive boots and expect to learn about the herd, which is Britain’s only free-ranging reindeer population in a sub-arctic ecosystem." - Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel is a writer with more than eight years of experience editing and writing for both brands and online publications—with a particular focus on travel, fashion, and lifestyle. This Is the UK's Largest National Park—How to Visit

"A guided hill‑walk experience led by expert herders that takes groups 30–40 minutes across rough ground to find and feed Britain’s only free‑ranging reindeer; participants should wear supportive boots and can feed the animals by hand and photograph them in their natural sub‑arctic habitat." - Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel is a writer with more than eight years of experience editing and writing for both brands and online publications—with a particular focus on travel, fashion, and lifestyle. 10 Ethical Animal Places to Visit in 2019

"Despite what Santa may have led you to believe, you don’t have to head to the North Pole or wait until Christmas to spot reindeer. An entire herd of these charismatic antlered beasts roams within Scotland. In the Cairngorm Mountains, you’ll find the United Kingdom’s only herd of free-range reindeer. Currently, about 150 of the hooved creatures call the rugged mountains home. They aren’t wild by any means—quite a few of them are put to work making public appearances or pulling sleighs during the holiday season—but they are allowed to wander as they wish within a 10,000-acre chunk of land. Reindeer once lived in the U.K., but the last wild ones disappeared about 800 years ago. In 1952, a Lappish man from northern Sweden named Mikel Utsi and his wife Dr. Ethel John Lindgren shipped a small group of reindeer over from Sweden to reintroduce the animals to the country. They chose to establish the herd in the Cairngorms, as the area’s unusual subarctic climate made it the only suitable place in the U.K. Their ecological experiment was a success. The reindeer have thrived in the often windy, dismal climate. They spend their days strolling around the hillsides, pausing to munch on a seemingly endless natural buffet of grass, birch leaves, and lichen (their feed is supplemented with grain, too). Because the reindeer are allowed to cover so much ground, it can actually be a bit hard to track them down at times. But pop in for a visit at the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre, and you’ll be able to meet a handful of friendly reindeer hanging out in one of the paddocks, waiting to greet curious visitors. The center also houses a tiny shop stuffed with a trove of reindeer-related trinkets." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Had such a fun time! The walk wasn’t too hard or far from the meeting point. Beautiful scenic view. The reindeers were so friendly and calm. The staff were lovely with loads of knowledge and facts about the animals. We even got to feed them at the end which was amazing. Highly recommend and a must do experience if you’re in the area!

What an amazing experience! Admittedly, we were super lucky - beautiful snow coverage, not too cold, with beautiful, clear weather. It felt truly unique and a little bit magical to meet these reindeer up close and personal. They are super friendly so you can get very, very close and the guides are really knowledgeable and fun. I would highly recommend it. Be sure to book in advance to guarantee a spot.

Simply amazing. The hike wasn’t that long or hard, and the scenery was stunning. We got to be up close and personal with a ton of reindeer. My whole group enjoyed feeding them and taking a TON of pictures. Kate and Lottie were informative and answered all of the questions we had about the reindeer. I definitely recommend booking a hill tour hike in advance for your group. It’s an absolute must for a trip through the Cairngorms!

What a magical place to spend christmas eve! Didnt know what to expect! the exhibition inside was so interesting and informative. The lady speaking in the paddocks about the reindeer was so passionate and could really tell she cared for the herd. and even father christmas was there for a sweet treat before getting the reindeer together. Kids were in festive bubble!

Best experience. The walking trail and the reindeers are out of the world especially when it's snowing. Ensure you are thoroughly dressed for the weather. And buy tickets in advance and check their availability

Second time visiting. It's a wonderful experience. The walk up the hill is short and beautiful, with a bridge crossing quite a big stream. The enthusiasm of the staff is heart warming. Best of all is getting to feed the reindeer where you can feel just how soft their noses are. Definitely book if you are in the area.

We had a fantastic few hours with the herd, such a brilliant experience. The three herders we had were so informative and answered all of our questions without hesitation. The walk to the herd was fantastic in itself, beautiful scenery, and the 30 second shower of rain we had made the most glorious rainbow. Worth every penny

An amazing experience seeing the reindeer up close and feeding them. It's a bit of an uphill walk to get to them but well worth it. If you're bringing a campervan, park on the road when you get to the reindeer centre as the car park has a really sharp turn on the exit. You're only at the centre for a short time before driving to another car park to begin the walk up to the herd. Absolutely recommend this reindeer experience!
