5 museums in Asia-Pacific for your cultural fix - SilverKris

"Reopened after a two-year renovation in the historic School of Arts building from the early 20th century, this museum houses extensive archival and photographic collections documenting the city and Far North Queensland. Four permanent galleries trace Cairns’s development from an industrial port to a holiday destination, while a veranda and temporary gallery host rotating displays about local characters and stories. After a visit, visitors often sample tropical fruit at Rusty’s Market, try ziplining at the Cairns Zoom and Wildlife Dome or go snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef." - Isabel Ong

Lovely little Museum in the heart of Cairns. Great history displays on local area, indigenous displays. Building of the Railway etc, lot's of info on individuals who made up Cairns history. Nice open veranda area upstairs with a breezy view of Cairns streets. Worth the visit, very reasonable price for entry. Recommend!

We had a 30 minute stop at the museum as part of a day tour with another company. James was assigned to us - and what can I say - he was A - M - A - Z - I - N - G. I could have stayed all day with him - he was informative, funny, kind and inclusive. I highly recommend that anyone who visits Cairms - they should visit this museum and learn what the city is all about. It is an incredible history. Thank you James, in particular, for making our short time with you so wonderful.

Really excellent and informative museum. Sensitively and professionally curated with a wide range of stories, objects and photos. Gives a real flavour of and insight into the complexity of the past of the area and all its people. Would recommend.

We went to the museum this afternoon. Our guide James displayed a remarkable depth of knowledge about the history of Cairns. From the indigenous arrival 60,000 years ago to the relevant tribes of the area James named the current groups and some of their customs. In 1860 it all changed. Arrival of the white man in an international gold rush. James covered the complete history of the area through the Kanakas, to various relevant development phases up to present day. All this explained through an excellent array of historic displays. I encourage visitors (and locals too) to spend an hour gathering some local colour from this top establishment Find it in the green building corner of Lake & Shields St.

Extremely well set out - staff go beyond in their service- particularly the lady who helped us get access to a cab. She didn't need to follow up to see that we had been helped. In all, the attention to detail in the displays certainly was in line or better than other museums we have visited. We'll done.😀
