50 States, 50 Desserts: America's Favorite Sweet Treats | Condé Nast Traveler

"At Calas Café, located in New Orleans’ African American Museum, I tried calas—rice‑flour‑based, spoon‑dropped fried treats that are the gluten‑free cousins of beignets and a key link to West African and New Orleans culinary history." - Arati Menon, Megan Spurrell

What a magical experience! Learning the history and rich culture behind the calas was inspiring. I will not spoil it for you, go in for yourself and enjoy the experience. Also the calas are way way way way wayyyyyyy better than beignets 💯💯💯 And literally this is the BEST COFFEE YOU WILL EVER HAVE! (Literally ever!) No sugar or creamer and it tastes absolutely wonderful ❣️ Then the calas; yum yum YUMMMM! Full of flavor and great textures and the lemon sauce on the side ooooo YASSSS 🫶 We found this spot on our second day and I wish we went everyday honestly, we made it there two more times. When I come back to NOLA, I will be getting this coffee everyday and of course some scrumptious calas too. The vibes inside are immaculate because the shop owner has such a vibrant and welcoming aura and is just such a kind and genuine being. Appreciate you! Now go to Calas Cafe and get yourself so calas and coffee ASAPPP :)

Just one word to describe this place WOW! The calas were the best thing we’ve ever had! Fresh and hot with powdered sugar and a delicious lemon curd for dipping. So very, very, very good! We were blown away by the delicious coffee. It was amazing! And the friendliest and nicest people in the French Quarter.

Wow. Really wow. What a delicious pastry and a light alternative to the Beignet that's got it's own rich history! This gem of a dish and a really kind and knowledgeable owner, Brandon make this treat one you can't miss. And a tasty coffee! Chef's kiss.

COME FOR THE COFFEE!!! Then the first calas bite HITS. Dip into the lemon sauce and the pistachios were just perfect. I ordered another 3 orders to go. It was a great and fun experience with Brandon sharing the history of Calas and watch how he prepared the calas!!!! 😝

An Unforgettable Culinary and Historical Experience My visit to Calas on Decatur was truly a highlight of my trip to New Orleans. While the food itself was incredible, what made the experience so special was the unparalleled service and expertise of Brandon. He was not just a server, but a true expert on the history of the calas. He taught us so much about the origins of this delicious dish and its significant role in the city's history, going beyond just serving a meal. The stories he shared and the passion he had for the food were infectious. The calas themselves were divine, and the coffee was the perfect complement, making for an absolutely amazing culinary experience. Brandon's knowledge and enthusiasm elevated our visit from a simple meal to a fascinating and memorable lesson in New Orleans culture and history. I highly recommend visiting Calas, and if you're lucky enough to be served by Brandon, you're in for a truly unique and enriching experience.

The calas are crispy and delicious! Brandon is very charismatic and you learn a little interesting history. I’m not a coffee drinker because I usually find it so bitter, but I actually ordered a cup after tasting a sample! It’s smooth and wonderful! It’s like being in someone’s living room, where I talked with the other customers. Jazz playing in the background. Great ambiance! Highly recommend!

Absolutely amazing, a true gem. Stumbled across this by accident but boy am I glad we did. True southern hospitality at it's finest. The Calas were a delightful afternoon treat, not too sweet and not too heavy. The coffee is some of the best I've had in all New Orleans. The owner, Branden, is a phenomenal representative of the New Orleans spirit. We'll be back every time we visit this magical city!
