Caldra B&B in Buncrana offers beautiful views and one genuinely kind host — Jerry — who greeted me warmly, helped with directions, and made me feel welcome on arrival.||Unfortunately, my experience was quickly derailed by the other host, Marie. I had given her a courtesy call earlier in the day to let her know I’d arrive around 8 p.m., and instead of appreciation, I got a scolding: “You better not be later than that.” Not exactly the tone you expect from a B&B.||When I arrived, she didn’t greet me. I found a handwritten note on the bed demanding an extra €33 — no explanation, no warning at booking. I had booked using a B&B Ireland voucher, which is supposed to cover the full stay. I was traveling alone, and Marie later told me the charge was because the room was “normally double occupancy.” That’s absurd. Vouchers are issued per person — not per room — and charging a solo guest extra just for showing up alone is either a scam or a profound misunderstanding of how the system works.||The next morning, she confronted me in the hallway before saying a single word of welcome, demanding payment for the mystery surcharge. I questioned it, calmly, but paid it just to end the interaction. Then came the final insult: I sat down for breakfast and was told to move because “another guest usually sits there.” That was enough. I left immediately.||Bottom line: This was the most inhospitable B&B experience I’ve had in Ireland. Jerry was great — but Marie’s behavior was cold, condescending, and entirely out of place in the hospitality industry. Solo travelers, and anyone using the voucher system, beware. I would never return.
