Calef's Country Store

We have been going to Calef’s since I was young. I stopped in today while passing through town and it was just like I remembered. Sadly no m&m pretzels, but the cashew turtles are amazing as always. We get the fruit slice pack and they are always so good, fresh, and flavorful! I checked out the drink section going for coke, but ended up with a fun “ blackberry jam” soda which was yummy but definitely steep at $3.99 a can. Love the atmosphere in here with all of the displays, though prices have definitely seemed to increase:

A Hidden Gem! Calef’s Country Store is the cutest little country shop—every inch is packed with amazing products! From the pickled section to the nostalgic candy to the buckets of pickles and cheese samples, I could easily spend an hour just browsing and tasting everything. I popped in for the first time on a lunch break because it’s so close to work—and I completely fell in love. I got the turkey coconut special wrap and it was to die for. And the fact that they offer online ordering is a huge win, especially since I don’t always have cell service to call in an order from work. But let’s talk about the gallon jugs of pickle juice. I didn’t know my pickle addiction had a final form until I laid eyes on that glorious jug. I’m not saying I’ll be drinking it straight from the fridge at midnight... but I’m also not not saying that. 🥒💚 I'll definitely be back—possibly just to visit my new best friend, the gallon of pickle juice.

Have been coming here since I was a child. The deli is amazing. They have great sandwiches and more. The feeling there is still of an old country store. It is full of charm. Great little gift ideas. But best of all is the cheese!!!

They have a great variety of all kinds of stuff. There cook books are amazing. I always buy the fragrance sprays for all the different seasons. The candy section is great. I always buy their sour pickles. Fun store to browse around

A real olde fashion country store. Sandwiches are super good. You get a pickle slice too. Prices reasonable considering generous portion.

I have to say in one of the best country stores in NH. Great deli with the freshest of meats! Kids will love the penny candy section not to mention all the other goodies. Homemade jams/spreads, pickling kits, A front display filled with all types of chocolates, truffles, fudge and much more! The employees are extremely friendly and all of which seem to carry that old fashion charm!

This place is amazing! Homemade jams, jellies, chocolate delights. Retro games, Penny candies, old time toys, vintage decor. They have been there since the 1800s. Love love love this place!!

If there is an old country store that says New England then Calef's Country Store is it!!! Right here in Barrington with a flavor for any area of your sweet tooth, a good sandwich, quality beers, wine, candy, confections, cheeses, jellies and jams just to touch the tip of the iceberg. A great team of knowledgeable associates to help you, with a store that says comfort in every way. Great items from Snappy Cheese, bottled pickle juice, a great selection of small and large labeled beers, sodas, chips, desserts, ready made meals and the list goes on and on.

Outstanding general store and decor store duo in the same spot. Plenty of little knick-knacks to peruse but mostly focused on food, Calef's not only has its own brand of jams, jellies, and bread/cake mixes, but it has the classic fare of old-time candies, unique regional sodas and syrups, and a full sandwich counter in the back. You'll be in a real pickle with the vat of dills available, as well as jars of pickle juice for sale! A couple cheese cases and some deli salads round out the offerings. Foodies assemble! Stock your cooler and car, then pop next door to the absolutely fantastic Elfmade & Company store (see its separate review). Always happy to find a gift shop/food combo, and this 150+ year collection of historic buildings housing foodstuffs and unique country decor, make Calef's/Elfmade a powerhouse combo. Always loved this place, esp before they upgraded it. Older was def. better, but still good!

I fell in LOVE with their st.patricks special sandwhich menu. Forgot the name but it was by far the BEST sandwhich I put in my mouth. Lovely and kind workers, a lot of resonable price of goods that caught my eyes. I'd totally bring my fam and friends back to try diff kinds of menus they have!

"Call me if you find a cuter country store," our friends said as they took us inside, and they were right. I had sensory overload once we stepped inside-- there is so much to look at and so many unique, homemade things to buy like their cheeses and chocolate. We got some salads and sandwiches and ate outside at one of the picnic tables, which was a beautiful spot due to the foliage. The grilled ham and cheese (I ordered mine without the mustard because I'm like that) was delicious and I was told that the salads were as well. I used my boyfriend's honey mustard to dip my sandwich into-- it was amazing. I had some of the snappy cheddar cubes from my boyfriend's salad which was amazing as well. I only regret not buying some homemade cheeses-- they have a spectrum of sharp cheddars that looked amazing.

The senator calef club sandwich was the tits! Definitely recommend! Also got the Uncle Terrence buffalo joint. That was pretty good but not as good. Make sure to try there homemade mustard - all different flavors ! Definitely coming back to this joint ! !

I have to say that this place actually felt like an authentic country store. It was you picture when you think of country store. It was only missing some lively chat coming from the porch area, maybe that does happen and I just missed it. I walked in with anticipation to pick up some snacks for my stay. This was the closest store to where I was staying which made for a great thing to have nearby. I browsed a bit an looked over the items they had in stock. I like how it is divided up in here. You have an area for the deli, one for candy, and one for souvenir type items that are New England-centric. I really liked how it carried many New England items. Some which I had never heard of, so it was kind of an introduction to me. After browsing through so much, I had to head for the door or I would have bought way too much of items that I really didn't need for such a short stay. Friendly staff and you can tell that this is a well shopped store as there was a steady stream of people coming and going.

I love visiting little kitchen gift shops so this one is a no brainer for me to visit! My SIL had gifted me some of their savory jams before and I've been a fan ever since! I got another one of their pepper jellies sweetened with fruit, some flavored honey sticks and a jar of intriguing maple apple drizzle (whatever that may be!). There were two other adjoining buildings that looked interesting but due to pandemic times, we didn't go in. My visit was brief but I really do like their jams and jellies selection. There was even ample parking so that's a win! I did knock off one star only because their prices are quite high, even for a touristy place. The packaging for their condiments and sauces are super cute and giftable.

The new owners took over several years ago. The store is still top notch. The butcher shop is great and the deli is awesome.

Bring back the homemade butter guy! Calef's used to sell HOME CHURNED butter. Oh my ! Can you imagine? It was wonderful. Lightly sweet, creamy texture, like my own Aunt used to churn! Wonderful! So nice! Now, they sell a corporate brand, US made (possibly in CHINA)??? Or from Asian shipped overseas, on long terrible journeys, that cause them high distress & worse. I but Kerry Gold - unsweetened butter. Bring back the home churned, butter guy! His products were so wonderful! But, the Calef's cheese is still so great!

This store is amazing they also have food and it's quite wonderful i definitely recommend going there. It's worth the money. Candy there is so cheep and to die for. The people there are so kind.

My wife and I have to put this in our travel plans a few times a year. Great deli. Overall wonderful store with a lot to check out. Be sure to check there frozen case for homemade goodies.

Visitors from out of town always love this place. The dimly-lit general store is reminiscent of days gone by. It is an old-fashioned country store with creaky floorboards and homemade items. My kid brought his fiance there on her first trip to NH. Calef's is definitely a tourist attraction. As far as the deli goes, we order sandwiches from here once in a while. The food is always delicious, hearty, and fresh. It's fun to browse in the gift shop and to see all the NH-made items. The downside of Calef's is that everything is super-expensive. They know they've got a good thing going with the tourist market and the wares are priced accordingly. Sometimes, the staff seems a bit surly, probably from dealing with tourists all day. If you want to buy some locally-made items to ship to loved ones who live away from NH, this is the place to go. If you have visitors from out of town, they will likely spend a small fortune here and love every minute of it.

I perfect little store with a ton of nostalgia and an amazing sandwich shop. It's hard to go in without buying something, so be warned. They have good snacks, a huge candy section, kids toys, home goods, food, and did I mention the sandwiches? I recommend the Senator and Mary Chesley.

Shucks, I can't believe I haven't been here before. NH has a lot of Country/General stores but this one is a little gem. It's busy, but not too crowded whereas you can't move about or get serviced comfortably. I stopped by yesterday morning on my way to an appointment and got a muffin because I was starving. It was one of the tastiest muffins I've ever had! So I came back on my way home. I could've easily dropped a load of money on their selection of jams, pickled foods, hot sauces, cheese, etc... but now that I know about it - I'll go back soon. On my return trip, I got a Squamscot Maple Cream Soda (yum!), a turkey sandwich that they didn't use the bread I asked for but was still very good (I am positive they would've corrected it if I mentioned it, but I took a bite and liked it as it was so no bother. There's places for you to sit and eat outside, they used their smoked cheddar in it and high quality meats. Yum! It came with a good pickle too. I bought jam and their homemade ginger snaps and was quite tempted to get the pork pie they were selling and a cookie ice cream sandwich but I wasn't going home right away and had no place to keep the pie cold...and my lunch made me too full for the sandwich. Next time!

Love this store. Old country store with lots of yummy stuff. The sandwiches are delicious. I love the old fashioned charm of it all.

We have been coming to Calef's for years and always love it! Everyone is so friendly and the kids love the candy room and assembling their own bag. The deli is great for a nice lunch!

A great place to pick up some authentic New England items. It creates a feeling of nostalgia every time I walk in, the penny candy, the old school candy that is very hard to find in "regular" stores like mallow cups, skybar, candy cigarettes, Teaberry gum, etc. There's also a whole wall of salsas, hot sauces, maple syrups, and such, most are locally made. In the back, there is a deli where you can get lunch, they also have a relatively big selection of cheeses. In the deli, there's also a soda cooler with class bottle sodas, again, most are all made locally. Prices are a bit steep, but if you're looking for a trip down memory lane, this is your place.

Worst Cherry pie we ever tasted. For $20 we expected a good homemade pie. It was like water with some cherries in it. It was not edible, had to throw it out. A waste of money for sure....

I've always loved this store so much!! They have the best choices of cheese and wine. The maple bacon cheese is amazing, i never leave without getting the maple bacon cheese or the pickled foods! And they have the cutest decorations. Everything is great here!

This little store is one of my favorite places ever to visit. My boyfriend's family lives right down the street and coming to Calef's always feels like home to me. The old wood floors, the barrels of pickles, the candy WAGON! The back has a huge cheese section. There are always fresh baked goodies and breads. I have gotten old fashioned candies and gifts such as relishes, marmalades, bread/pancake mixes. I wish I was there now- there is no Calef's Country Store in New Orleans.

I love this little country store; it has always been a favorite for sandwiches, and I almost always get a little chunk of cheese in my stocking on Christmas (I love their Rat Trap Cheddar!). Still set up in old-timey country store fashion with penny candy, homemade jams and relishes, and (yes) a pickle bin. Feel the history of the location in the creaking floorboards as you make your way to the back deli counter... *I don't eat meat often....but I make an exception for Calef's maple-turkey sandwich on homemade oatmeal bread (with lettuce, tomato, mayo, and I ask for the dill pickle and cheese ON the sandwich - they might roll their eyes at this mild inconvenience as it is not normally a menu option). If you get the special, you get that stack of goodness, a drink, and a dessert (up front....you won't be able to choose just one) for somewhere between 7-9$. *My heaven: Calef's ginger snaps TOPPED with a piece of their snappy cheddar (heck, make a ginger snap sandwich between TWO pieces of cheese). Perfect combo of ginger KAPOW! and creamy cheddar MMMM! *My only negative: the hours. I now live near Boston, so by the time I've winded my way up to home country it's too late to grab a bite at the Sto'ah. M-Sat 8-6pm, Sun 8-5pm *Try out their recipe for Hot Pepper Jelly Cheesecake (sounds weird - tastes incredible, and a hell'uva surprise if you bring it as a party favor!). Definitely the place for urbanites to come and oo-and-ahh about how "cute little country people must live," but for those of us who call this side of NH home, it's just an f-in' awesome place to grab a bite (...and a huge block of cheese) for the road.

This store, is the epitome of New Hampshire. It has old and creeky wood floors, big barrels full of kettle corn (and pickles!), homemade just about everything...and if its not made on site, its made locally. Maple syrup, jams/jellies of every combination and type, a big candy wagon, a section of baked goods and breads, gifty NH items and more... In the back is a deli counter with sandwiches and prepared foods to go, which are ALL amazingly delish. Also, the CHEESE. They make their own cheeses that are all amazing (you can sample ALL of them!!!) I recommend the CHAMPAGNE cheese OR smokey cheddar! Mmm Mmm Mmmmmmmm. It DOES get crowded on weekends, so beware. Prices? Good, not cheap, but also not super expensive for a place that has all these delish finds. I highly recommend.

Calef's Country store is a great old country general store. They have all sorts of penny candy that you can fill a bag with. They also have homemade bread which is delicious. Homemade cider donuts. Homemade cookies, whoopie pies, fudge, I could go on and on here. They have lots of cheese's which you can ask for a sample before you buy. They also make their own cheese spreads which are awesome. They do make sandwiches to go. If you on your way up North taking Rte 125 stop in I guarantee you will be happy you did as you will find of lots of goodies you cannot just find everywhere. We always stop here after we go to the Christmas Dove, literally almost across the street. Both awesome places.

I bought 4 lbs of cheese from the deli for christmas gifts. I also picked up a lb of fudge. I paid with a credit card, so didn't notice until I got home that it cost me 75 dollars! Looking at the packages, I noticed that the cheese rang up at 18.99 a pound. I called the store to report the error and was told that is indeed the right price for the cheese. The man I spoke to said he would discuss it with the owner and have them call me. I never heard back from them. Apparently repeat business is not what they're after. Nice store, country goods and whatnot, but beware the nineteen dollar a pound cheese!

Calefs is a great store with some really awesome supplies. They have an excellent menu with reasonable prices. I especially enjoy the wraps menu. This store has lots of knick knacks and treats for your long and boring trek across New Hamsphire. I will be returning here on my next drive thru.

I love watching them make the most delicious deli sandwiches I've ever had. If I lived in Barrington, NH I would be there every day! I love their selection for candy! Even, tho I'm an adult I always have fun filling up a bag of candy. Also, their soda is incredible good. To top it off, I love their selection of cheese, I wish I had enough money to buy all their cheeses in bulk! I also love their selection of all their products!

I love Calefs. Great store. I have the ham mailed to Fl a few times a year and always make sure I visit Calefs when I visit NH. Always great products from the area !!

Always is neat place to visit and buy NH products. I was looking for a NH baseball cap they didn't have any. I was sad. The lady said her brother made for them and had not delivered any.

Calef's is a somewhat odd combination of a small village store and a tourist attraction. A lot of locals patronize it for items like sandwiches, cheeses, donuts and bread. But many of the items are geared toward tourists and have tourist prices. Maple syrup, for example, is outrageously expensive here as are many of the "New England" items.

I really loved this place but over the past years the selection seems to have dwindeled as far as the items they carry. I know some country stores in other areas of NH carry a more diverse selection of items beyond food. Here you will find more food items. There are a few items I always get here such as homemade peanut butter, pepper jelly, and their ginger snaps are great. The marinades all have high fructose corn syrup in them so I won't buy them because that is a horrible thing for your body. I prefer more natural marinades. Their dried soups are pretty good here too!

You want cheese? Oh, you'll get the cheese alright. The cheeses and the sandwiches and the sauces. Steakhouse Onion cheese is my personal favorite and you're all missing out if you haven't stopped by. This place is known all over NH!

A very nice little country store with some great cheddar cheese. They also still have penny candy which is fun for the kids and enough touristy items to keep most moms and dads occupied.

Calef's Country Store is a wonderful hometown New England landmark. They have the best cheese on earth!! I have been going there since I was a kid with my dad. Nothing has changed. Perfect then, perfect now!

We've been coming here for many, many years. It's a popular destination for my family and I to drive the 45 minutes one way to visit. Unfortunately, while it's still good, many things have changed resulting in a slightly lower grade than the 5 stars it used to be. A great place for kids to take a paper bag and fill with penny candy. Well, not so much penny and more like dimes and quarters now compared to 20 years ago, but it's a modern day penny candy selection plus inflation. Our kids have loved it for years. The fresh bread and donuts are great. We used to be able to get blueberry milk, but apparently, the milk supplier has changed. Now, every time we go in, we can't get it on the right day where they have coffee or chocolate milk in stock. We've asked the employees many times when the milk arrives. We've arrived the day of, the next day, etc., and delivery keeps changing or delayed delivery, etc. We haven't been able to buy a milk in more than 2 years and we visit at least 10 times per year. Cheeses are good along with the large array of other products in the store to choose from. Still worth the visit.

I ordered a warmed meatloaf sandwich on ciabatta with mayo and sweet relish, I got smoked cheddar added... sounds amazing right? Well... it would have been if the meatloaf hadn't been PUREED. The WARMED part made it worse. A "loaf" is something you take slices off of... not what I got which seems to have been thrown in a blender... DO NOT GET THE MEATLOAF SANDWICH!

I was hoping for a bit more from this place after hearing all the hype as I'm a fan of old general stores and local products. They carry an assortment of items, but many aren't even from NH. The home made ginger snaps were the best part, but other than that, it's just another store that sells cheeses and canned jellies and preserves and the prices are higher than other places.

I've lived in Barrington for almost 10 years, not far from Calefs. We have always enjoyed going to Fine Foods for a home made sandwich, and a real pickle! Though pricey, always worth it!!! We heard the store recently changed ownership, and admittedly haven't been for lunch in several months. Decided on getting sandwiches this weekend and were GREATLY disappointed! Price still high, but bread very dry (almost stale), and sandwiches were notably smaller. Mentioned to a neighbor who shared similar recent experience. Too bad! What was once a hidden gem, is now just another over priced bad place for lunch! Still fun to visit, and a good atmosphere, but get lunch elsewhere!! It'll be cheaper for sure, and WAY better!

Expensive for what you are getting... But keep in mind, part of what you are paying for is that old small town feel. Good sandwiches, good chocolate, good baking mixes. Love the hot pepper jelly.

ok place, very good cheese and sandwiches, things have changed breads and pastries made elsewhere shipped in, the more you look the more you realize not much is made there lots of Stonewall Kitchen type stuff with califs stickers on them but it is presented nice even if its a fake

My family and I have been visiting Calef's Country Store for years! It's a great place and the cheese is amazing. During my most recent visit 08.06.15 I purchased some extra sharp cheddar cheese and couldn't wait to have some once I got home. Unfortunately it tasted "off" almost like a super mild regular grocery store bought cheese. So I wrapped the cheese back up and decided I was going to bring it back the following day. When I arrived at the store the next day to make an exchange I was made to feel awful for returning something that simply didn't meet my expectations. Mind you I have never returned anything prior this. I have never had to I've always been extremely happy with their cheese. Their store return policy which I have posted below states that they will promptly refund or exchange anything if it doesn't meet your expectations and will do so with no questions asked. The cashier and the gentleman whom I'm assuming was either the manager or owner was quite annoyed he stated that he was "going to have to throw the cheese away now" and that "he couldn't return the item because it had been opened" he did give me a different cheese which is the one I was going to exchange it for but it was smaller and less expensive than the original cheese I had purchased the one I had originally purchased was $11.43 and the one the gentleman offered me in exchange was $9.23. I am just writing this review because I was completely take taken back by the lack of customer service I was given. No customer should be made to feel wrong or awful for simply wanting to exchange an item that didn't meet their expectations. Especially since their website clearly states they will do so promptly and with no questions asked. I don't think I will be returning to Calef's after this experience. This is by far one of my favorite places to be at. They have candy food local Products subs and the best pickles in the world.they have such great workers I am very pleased

I have been going to Caleb's Country Store for many years. Those ginger snaps are so good and so are their pastries. My best purchase is their ham. Their hot dogs are so good and the cheeses are the best. An old fashioned store with various goodies all over the store. Sandwiches on site with coolers of good drinks. Visit the store and get a time gone by feeling of the good ole days. Love it here at Caleb's Country Store.
