Star T.
Yelp
First I would like to start by saying the service was good. Both our waitresses were sweet and accommodating. The restaurant was clean, the bathrooms were clean. Everything as far as ambiance met expectation when it comes to eating at a local diner.
I based my decision to eat here off of other Yelp reviews and Trip advisor. Generally they are reliable. But after my own personal experience I feel like I had been mislead. It says 4 1/2 stars but I say at best this place deserves 1 1/2 to 2 stars.
Callies Homestyle Restaurant. It spoke to me. I love supporting local businesses and I love a good home cooked meal. The 4 star rating was the cherry on top and I told my family we had to try it.
I started regretting my decision after careful review of the $4 kids menu. There were quite a few options. But $4 for a bologna, peanut butter and jelly, or grilled cheese sandwich? I have never seen a bologna sandwich on a menu before. That was a red flag for me.
I should have left but I wanted to give this place a chance. I decided my safest bet would be to stick to basic breakfast fare. Food 101. French toast (supposedly Texas toast), oatmeal, eggs over medium, toast and home fries for some of my family. My son vied for a cheeseburger and my husband made the risky decision of ordering a club sandwich.
The French toast was two slices of white bread cut in half ($5). My kids weren't impressed and still hungry. My eggs and toast were cold. My toast was lathered in cold butter. LATHERED, and not even close to melting. My "home fries" were small, thinly sliced potato's. Heavy emphasis on small and THIN. I think my portion of potatoes would have amounted to 1/2 of a small potato. My daughter ordered a side of potatoes too. I think she got the other 1/2 of my small potato. They were pitiful and also cold.
My husbands Club sandwich came out as a B.L.T meal. We alerted the waitress to the mistake and she quickly deduced to us that all we were missing was the ham. So she took his plate to the kitchen and added the missing meat. It was an odd moment to say the least. It took all of 30 seconds to correct and when we got it back, sadly, it was some of the saddest processed meat I had seen in a while. My husband called it Sam's club meat and cafeteria food.
I had expected his sandwich to turn out this way because of the various bologna options on the menu. If your serving bologna then I think it is safe to assume your other cold cut options are going to be of equal quality.
The cheeseburger and Club came with crinkle cut fries. How can you screw up a fry? I would think it would be nearly impossible. But the fries were soft, cold and mealy. And our drinks? Water, Dr.Pepper and pink lemonades. Fountain Pink Lemonades. Not even the lemonade was fresh.
Over-all we paid $50 for 12 slices of bread, eggs, a potato, oats, some low quality processed meats a bun and French fries. Cold, flavorless, unimagined food. How can food be flavorless?? I don't know but they managed it. My taste buds were in the Twilight Zone with this place. I don't recall anything on the menu that would qualify as "homestyle" food. Fresh cut fries would have been nice. Local farm fresh eggs would have hit the spot. Artisan bread would have been delightful. Fresh squeezed lemonade would have made more sense if your touting "homestyle" in your title. There are endless ways this place could better the food they are serving.
I have not written a review in a while but I had to for this place because I didn't want anyone else to be mislead by other reviews like me. Don't expect much when choosing to eat here and expect to pay more then is reasonable for what they are serving you.
