6 Interactive Culinary Experiences to Try in Charleston

"At Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit I learned to make the classic buttermilk biscuit—warm, flaky, and quintessentially Charleston—during a hands-on class at the bakery’s North Charleston production facility. After a short tutorial on the biscuit’s place in Charleston kitchens, I mixed, shaped, and baked my own biscuit using the company’s longstanding recipe; classes are designed for groups of eight to 12, take place in the morning every other Saturday, cost $150 per student (minimum of eight), and include a take-home buttermilk biscuit mix and jam. Sessions fill quickly, so book early." - Lauren Mowery

Only open 3 weeks at new location on King St. and they are doing a wonderful business already! Named Callie's Hot Little Biscuits, they are delish. French press coffee is perfect to sip on while you wait. They just opened so they are working out the kinks and there is a bit of a wait but you can sip your coffee or mint iced tea while waiting. Very NYC vibe. Used to be an alley so it's long and narrow. Simple and clean. Love it!

I love biscuits, but Callie's are THE BEST. We order them for staff meetings, always a hit! I just wish the line wasn't always out the door! I don't usually go here because the wait time is pretty long.

What appears to be mold was found when I opened my product. I contacted Callie’s corporate office but they passed the buck and blamed it on the retailer. They didn’t seem interested in quality control when I brought this to their attention. I suggested an $8 refund for my inedible product, but they passed the buck there too. Product had a sell by date 25 days from my purchase date. Can you just imagine another 25 days on the shelf?

I love Callie's biscuits. I thought I got a gift card for the Hot Little Biscuits but accidentally got it for the bakery. I emailed to see if I could come pick up biscuits from the bakery and they were very helpful and I have a freezer full of biscuits!

I bought a box of 12 Country Ham Biscuits at our local country store. For $28 I was expecting real food. I got 12 1 inch square biscuits with about a 1 tsp ground ham spread among 6. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. I feel ripped off!

We went to the King Street location. Really nice staff but long wait for just good biscuits. The blackberry jam and all the other ingredients were fresh but limited seating makes the wait to cook more product a bit long.

Loyal customers. Ordered ham and mixed biscuit selections. One of the boxes of ham didn’t arrive. They fixed it for us without hesitation. Exceptional customer service. Thank you! Y’all rock.

Yelp
Amazing!!! Melts in your mouth and had me coating this place everyday!! Now this location was inside the City Market. Folks were always pleasant! Dont forget to add honey to your biscuit before walking away! I also tried the grits and that was delicious as well!!

Yelp
I never knew how good a biscuit could be. My son and I attended one of the live cooking demonstrations and it was so much fun! Our biscuits turned out perfect and we ate all of them in one sitting. Word of advice, always make twice as much as the bag suggests. Cannot wait to visit downtown and try some of the other recipes they offer!

Yelp
I was so excited to try this food truck when I found out they were coming to Rivertowne this weekend! I was quite disappointed in what I got. I'm not a fan of pimento cheese, but I love a good breakfast sandwich. This was good, but the portion I received for the price was abysmal. The "egg" must've been the smallest egg they could find- typically when I order a breakfast sandwich they use 2 large eggs, but this was a tiny and thin little piece of egg. It tasted good but I would not eat here again because the prices are ridiculous for what you get.

Yelp
I recently picked up an advanced order from their food truck butter when they came to my neighborhood. I placed the order online and you had a set time to pick up when they would be nearby. They came from Daniel Island and were running late so starting the pickup process was a little delayed but once they got up and running everything went pretty smoothly. I got a 12 pack of assorted biscuits. I assumed it was the ones with fillings like cinnamon butter or pimento cheese, but I was wrong. It wasn't super clear when I ordered, but probably my fault. Either way, the biscuits were still great, I just enjoy them more with the toppings so I was a little bored of them with 12 between two of us. We heated them up the next morning and they were still pretty good.

Yelp
I was so excited to find the biscuit making tour for a corporate group coming to town. I had back and forth email communication (because they literally don't pick up the phone or call you back, EVER even when you request a call). I finally got in touch via email with Liane, a manager, and after several emails she finally replied. I asked to talk to her, and she asked me to set up a google call, so I did. She accepted the call invite and I sat on the call for 10 minutes ALONE as she never showed. Truly such a disappointment as I now have to tell my client that this is no longer an option due to the complete lack of communication. Take your $150 per person elsewhere, as in now have to do with my group of 20. Too bad as it would have been a nice $3000 pay check for them.

Yelp
I recently purchased the carmalized onion dip from Costco from Callies Biscuits. I was truly disappointed as the dip was very sweet, so much so that I had to throw it away.

Yelp
I have watched your show and have been wanting to try your biscuits. I was so excited when planning my trip to S.C. I make sure to plan a trip to Meeting Street just so I could get one. Imagine my surprise when I ordered the biscuits and gravy only to get a biscuit that was doughy on the bottom. My friend ordered the 3 small biscuits, there were all hard on the top. I was so disappointed. I ended up getting better biscuit and gravy at the hotel I was staying at.

Yelp
Calling all visitors and locals...please stop here and get you a biscuit!! My daughter wants to claim naming rights to this delicious place cause they share the same awesome name!! We have been to this place so many times I lost count. Whenever we are downtown we are stopping in to pick up biscuits and I bring everyone here that visits. If you visit the one at the market be prepared to stand in line unless you get there early. And you know what the say a long line must mean it's good food. I've never had a bad biscuit here they are made fresh right in front of you!! Here is a list of must eats....the cinnamon biscuit, blackberry biscuit (loaded with delicious blackberry jam on the inside), the birthday cake biscuit is out of this world, the cheddar biscuit, the cheese and chive biscuit and lastly you can build your own biscuit. My daughter did this the other day and got the pimento cheese biscuit and had to eat it with a fork it was so big and she ate every single bite of it and asked to bring one home! Please stop here you will not be disappointed!!

Yelp
Not what I expected. Large biscuit sandwich, but the biscuit was dry and cold. I ordered the sausage egg and pimento cheese biscuit. Both the egg and sausage were not hot. In fact the egg was actually cold. Great pimento cheese but I don't think they make it there. I chose the mild and it still had a small kick to it. Very delicious. I also ordered a lemonade no ice. Just a refilled cup of lemonade out of the cooler. I would go back if I was with others who wanted to go, but I would not make the choice to return.

Yelp
I went to the King St location and there was a line at the door. Turns out you have to wait in line for the good stuff in Charleston. It was so good that I went back a second time. I'm only visiting for the weekend so it's very rare that I'd go to the same place twice. Only thing is that I wish they smothered the sausage gravy when it's only a little scoop. You can tell it's high quality as it's thick and meaty. The pimento spread is scrumptious too

Yelp
I recently picked up my order of frozen biscuits ... yes, frozen ... why would someone get frozen biscuits? Because when you're craving biscuits, and you want the best biscuits in town, you don't want to worry about parking downtown, placing an order online (through their app) or waiting in line to resolve this craving. My order consisted of 4 packages of frozen biscuits, each with 12 biscuits tucked away in freshness sealed bags of joy, and each of my 4 packages was a different flavor. I believe they call this the Carolina Happy Basket (not the real name, but it fits). I let my first package thaw in the fridge overnight, but instructions are on the bag if you want to do it quicker than this. I then wrapped it in foil and placed it in the oven at 400 for 20 minutes, and what came out was just as good as what I can buy at one of their locations. Kids and wife were all happy, and it made a great addition to our pasta dinner. I'm bringing another package to my in-laws for Mothers Day weekend, where it is sure to be a hit and I'll be the favorite son-in-law for at least a day.

Yelp
WORTH THE WAIT! Seriously best biscuit I've ever had. I've been twice first time I got the goat cheese and jam biscuit second time I got a classic bacon, egg, and cheese. You can not go wrong with whatever you select. The line is long and the space is crowded but that is part of the appeal! If you're visiting from out of town or a local this needs to be on your list of places to visit.

Yelp
What is not to love about unique good tasting biscuits. I found this spot on Yelp and just knew I wanted to get some of their biscuits to take home and enjoy with my girls. The fact that I didn't have to go downtown and deal with that debauchery made it even better. We arrived around 1PM and were a little nervous when we pulled up as it looked as if they weren't open. Once we got to the door we saw the staff inside and they opened the door so we could come in. They gave us a menu of their offerings and I was like a kid in a candy store unable to decide on which ones I just had to have. I decided to get Cheese and Chives, Iced Blueberry and Cinnamon Biscuits. They give you instructions on how to bake them with your order. I tried them and wow it was amazing. We enjoyed the cheese and chive with an Italian meal we made at home and they were a perfect addition. Unique and tasty were the two words that came to mind as I enjoyed every bite of the biscuits. We also got their homemade Pimento Cheese which was delightful. It has quality shredded cheese and hunks of tasty pimentos with a very nice spices added in. We put it on several things and loved it. It is a little pricey but well worth the cost due to the great quality. I will definitely be back as soon as my frozen stash runs out and am going to add Callie's biscuits to my Holiday Meal menu.

Yelp
Loved the place. There was a little wait but well worth it. The only thing I wish they had is a seating area. After getting my food I had nowhere to seat and enjoy it. A lot of people sat on the sidewalk.

Yelp
I drove 20 minutes out of my way only to not find the actual location. I called and found out they only sell frozen biscuits here. I guess I will find something else to eat now.

Yelp
I cannot say enough good things about Callie's Charleston Biscuits! They went above and beyond to make me happy! Their customer service is absolutely amazing and their products are the best. I will continue to order from them, and search my local stores for their biscuits and pimento cheese!
