Calypso seems completely random, so much so that I almost passed it by! Though it's location and cuisine are a bit odd, and the food is worth trying.
Met a couple friends here on a snowy Saturday, about an hour and a half after the restaurant opened. I almost missed it because upon approaching, it looks sort of shabby and rundown, to the point where I wasn't even sure if the restaurant was open. Maybe this is just a place where the locals go, but if Calypso wants more customers, which by the looks of it they need, they should do something about their façade.
If you or your dining party have any dietary requirements like vegan, gluten-free, dairy free, then this is definitely a good place to stop! It is one of the few places in southwest Ohio I have been to that actually mark these things on the menu, and if I ask about something they actually seem knowledgeable.
Menu wise, the soup is the stand out star! I only ordered a cup as a side, but would have gladly eaten entire bowl of it. Nice spice level, can't wish for much more!
I ordered the pulled jackfruit at my main and I have to say I was somewhat disappointed. Though it's awesome to see jackfruit on a menu, I wish more places had this, the truth is the texture wasn't right. It needed to have been pulled a lot finer, but the spices were good on it, not something you get every day. The slaw that came with it is more on the vinegar side, which was needed next to the spices of the barbecue jackfruit and the soup, however the meal would have been more balanced if there was a citrus component to the slaw.
Calypso is very reasonably priced, with excellent portion sizes, making it probably one of the best choices for your wallet. I would probably stop here again, and hope they made some exterior and interior improvements.
