15 Best Hotels in Portland, Maine

"Tucked between Old Port on one side and the now-expanding eastern waterfront on the other, this newcomer is a welcome trifecta of sleek, boutique, and chic. With extra-wide windows looking out to Portland harbor, our sixth floor king bedroom felt a bit like sleeping in the highest cabin on a yacht, looking at all the ocean and city. A garden terrace—complete with water fountains, lounge seating, and a tony bar—loomed just below. Softly striped duvets, graphic wallpapers depicting historic Portland, and mod lighting lend character. And state-of-the-art tech is everywhere (including in bathroom mirrors that double as TV screens). Alto Terrace Bar + Kitchen, the property’s in-house restaurant, turns out topnotch bowls of plump local mussels scented with chipotle, and plates of salmon with fragrant basmati rice bolstered by white wine and cream, asparagus, and spinach. Sample the entire menu out on the rooftop terrace whenever the weather cooperates." - Joe Ricchio, Alexandra Hall

Cambria Hotel Portland Team, I just wanted to express my sincere gratitude for the wonderful experience I recently had at your hotel. My stay from 2/2-2/5 exceeded my expectations, and I wanted to take a moment to specifically acknowledge the outstanding service and hospitality provided by your entire team. From the warm welcome at check-in to the friendly interactions throughout my stay, your staff consistently demonstrated a genuine commitment to guest satisfaction. I spoke with the General Manager, Crystal before we arrived, she helped me with a mistake I had made during booking. I had such a positive interaction with her even though I'd needed to completely modify my stay just a few days before arriving. I was genuinely blown away by the outstanding customer service I was given before ever arriving at the hotel. My room, was impeccably maintained and provided a comfortable and relaxing haven after a long day of exploring Portland. I especially enjoyed the view, the ridiculously comfortable King size bed, the overall layout and feel of the room. Honestly, we were so surprised by how ample the space was. The stunning view of the harbor was just icing on the cake. The housekeeping staff also deserves recognition for their diligence in ensuring the room was always spotless. Beyond the comfortable accommodations, I was also impressed with the convenient location of the hotel, which made it easy to walk to all the major attractions and restaurants. These elements contributed to a truly enjoyable and memorable experience. Please extend my sincere thanks to all members of your team, from the front desk and housekeeping to the restaurant and bar staff. Their dedication and hard work are truly appreciated. I would not hesitate to recommend the Cambria Hotel Portland to anyone visiting the city, and I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to return on my next trip. Well done Cambria Hotel, see you in March 😘

My wife and I stayed at the Cambria Hotel Portland for three nights in early February. We had a wonderful time staying in the hotel and exploring Portland for our first time. The hotel is modern and beautiful. All of the staff that we interacted with were very friendly and helpful when we needed assistance or advice on sights to see. Our room was very clean, comfortable, spacious and had a very nice view of the port. We visited both the on-site restaurant and bar during our stay. The food and drinks were very good and reasonably priced compared to other places we visited in the city. The hotel's location is perfect for a walking exploration of Portland's vibrant downtown. We will definitely return to Portland in the spring and will be staying at the Cambria Hotel.

I enjoyed my stay here, the beds are so comfortable there are some things I would prefer were different though. They only have Valet parking that is an additional 40.00 a night, the hotel has no other space to leave your car which is inconvenient. They also take a 25.00 dollar charge that can be used as a credit at their snack store or the restaurant on site. It honestly is a kidnapping of 25.00.

Google
My overall experience at this hotel was pleasant, but there are a few important details to keep in mind. The room was well-furnished and clean, with all the necessary amenities, but the additional fees system leaves something to be desired. In addition to the room rate, the hotel charges a $25 daily fee, presented as a credit to be used at the restaurant or bar. However, this credit cannot be rolled over, which limits flexibility. For those who don’t use these services every day, this fee essentially becomes a mandatory extra charge. Another point to consider is the parking cost: $40 per day, which is quite steep and can significantly impact your overall budget. Overall, the hotel provides good service and a well-maintained property, but the extra fees make the experience less transparent and could deter guests seeking a stay with clearer and more straightforward pricing.

Google
5 - room was stellar, my wife was blown away. Super clean, spacious, comfortable 5 - location was awesome. You’re right in old port, walkable to everything! Shipyard brewing is connected to the hotel, they offer you 10% off with hotel card 3 - FYI, they have what is called an “amenity fee” of 25$ a day. When we arrived we were told of this, and the way it was explained was “you have $25 worth to spend at the hotel per day” irregardless it will be charged to your bill. Just be weary of this, ask about it when you arrive. 1 - parking is valet only, 40$ a night. There is street parking but you have to find the free parking Overall it’s a very nice spot

Everything at this hotel was great except for one thing - the daily $25 service fee. This is added on to every night of your stay and cannot be removed from the bill. It does include a $25 dining credit to entice you to spend more money at the restaurant or the snack counter, but it is confusing to keep track of how much you have spent and is just a needless complication as a way for them to nickel and dime their guests. I'd happily come stay here again as the staff were great as were the rooms and location, but lose the service charge next time.

Google
Let’s start with the bad. The hotel charges a $25 amenity fee per night which I knew in advance. The $25 can be used towards food and beverage at the restaurant, bar and market store. Upon check out, the invoice did not apply the credit towards our breakfast charges at the bar. I told the front desk, Jeffrey, and he argued saying that the invoice was correct and I owed the full breakfast amount. This is not correct as the $25 per day was not deducted. Jeffrey had the rudest customer service and refused to listen to my point while firmly believing he was correct when he was clearly not. This is truly unacceptable and I’ve see other reviews complained about his rudeness. Why is the hotel not doing anything about this? This ruins the hotel’s reputation and quality. In addition, I called housekeeping and guest service multiple times to ask for bath towels and no one picked up and I had to go to the front desk myself to ask. On the other hand, the hotel is located perfectly near all the best restaurants. The room was very spacious and the king felt more like a California king. The front desk in the later afternoon (I didn’t catch their names) were so helpful and friendly. The breakfast was good and the restaurant staff offered to call us when the food was ready.

Great location in middle of downtown. A bit pricey since cruise ships seems to land here and it’s a1 1/2 blocks away from the terminal. Comfortable room with a great corner view of harbor, spacious bathroom , noisy ac/heat unit. Needs comfortable lounge type chairs, mount tv out of the way.

Yelp
This place was very nice and conveniently located in old port! We could walk to tons of restaurants and breweries. I will say there were quite a few added fees that made this room pretty pricey. They have a $25 amenity fee they add on at check in - this money can be used at the bar, breakfast, snack cart, etc but is still a required spend. It was also $40 per night to valet our car. Overall the room was very nice and spacious. It was also nice and quiet. They allowed a complimentary late check out and generally all staff were very friendly.

Yelp
Odd set up where you go to the 4th floor for check-in. We used valet for our car as it was the only option at $40 per day. We were happy our room was ready early after traveling all day. Unfortunately it was opposite the ice machine, which was not in a room like you usually see, but sitting out in the open in the hallway. Yes, we heard every person getting ice. Our room was very nice. Lots of room, a comfortable bed except for the mushy pillows. The bathroom was roomy and nice. Our view was of an office building so we had to keep our blind shut so they couldn't see us. Location was good in that you could walk all over Portland, but weren't right in the midst of all the noise. So even though we had a crappy room location, our stay was good.

Yelp
First time in a Cambria Hotel and we were very pleased with all phases that we used. Check-in was very professional and courteous. Our room was very nice, While we did not dine in the hotel, we had an adult beverage. The staff was very nice.

Yelp
Nice rooms, nice views, comfortable beds, decent pillows, and clean. So what could possibly be wrong? We booked on Expedia. We knew it would be an extra $30 a night to park. But then they sneak in an extra $25 a night charge that you can use as a credit towards their restaurant or sundries store, but the fee info is extremely well hidden. At check in we informed them we weren't aware and objected to the fee. Whether right or wrong ,we were polite and respectful. The desk clerk called for the manager on duty. Wow! What an attitude. He was rude, distracted, tried to gaslight us and was dismissive. First, if we had known, we would have booked elsewhere. I object to being forced to use the hotel's restaurant, especially in a foodie city like Portland. Second, I don't need to be subjected by such a caustic attitude. Ironically, during our 3 day stay, I also witnessed the exact same initial shock and customer outrage from two other check -ins in passing. It's a horrific policy and if they had the best rooms in town , I'd never stay here again due to that policy and more important,, attitude.

Yelp
I've stayed here twice now, and have been very happy both times. The rooms are modern at clean, and the beds are comfortable. You can pay for parking with your booking, or pay $40/day, and it's valet. They are quick to get your car to the curb. My one complaint is that they give you a daily credit to use at the restaurant. I would rather pay less for my room and use that money to go eat at one of the many wonderful Portland restaurants. Overall, I would definitely come back here to stay the next time I'm in Portland.

Yelp
New hotel in Old Port. Good location, nice rooms, comfortable beds. Check-in is on the fourth floor for some reason. And they charge an extra $25 per day which you can use as a discount in their bar or restaurant, which was not cool. But they make it clear when you reserve, which IS cool. Room they gave us was 162 steps from the elevator. Which was a pain at first, but was also probably the reason it was so quiet; no one passing by in the hallway at night! $40 per day for valet parking, which was not cool. But we found a spot on the street a block away, which WAS cool.

Yelp
I had been waiting for this hotel to open for quite some time but was finally able to book a stay here. It's very trendy, with everything - front desk, restaurant and bar area, and outside patio with its own smaller bar area - all on the 4th floor. The patio has a variety of seating options in the sun, in the shade, and under umbrellas. The rooms are also trendy, and the bed was very comfortable. Odd-numbered rooms above the 4th floor will have a view of the patio, and my room had a partial view of the harbor. I even had a light switch to control under-the-bed-lights... I guess maybe there's a boogeyman problem in Portland??? But the rooms can also be noisy. I could easily hear the footsteps of the people in the room above me as they walked back and forth, and the seagulls outside are particularly loud in the morning. Valet parking (no self-park options in the hotel garage) is $40/day with unlimited in/out, but this is the price you pay for being close to Old Port. This hotel will be slightly less expensive than the hotels closer to Old Port, and it is your best option (if you are okay with the price) if you are a Choice Rewards member.

Andrea R.

Yelp
I did not stay there, but I have gone there for breakfast and lunch. The food is great! The decor of the hotel and the grounds are beautiful. It's a great location in Portland.

Claudia f.

Yelp
I felt pretty let down by our stay at the Cambria Hotel. The bed was comfy and the view was nice, but our room wasn't cleaned at all during our four nights, and our trash just piled up. We had to ask for more towels, too. The location is great for walking around, but there are other hotels nearby that offer the same perk. Plus, the only parking option is a $40 a night valet, which I could really do without. We used our $25 food and drink credit once, but the mussels we got were the worst I've ever had--seriously, I couldn't even eat the bread. And to top it all off, on our last night, we could see people having sex with their blinds wide open from our room. Wanna be fancy hotel with useless low quality amenities.

Yelp
Great new and modern hotel near everything in Old Port. It's quiet, has great AC, and the shower was huge! Rooms are spacious and clean. Staff was kind and professional. Bed was not the softest. Valet parking is $40/night.

Yelp
The rooms are very clean, comfortable and spacious! The employees go above and beyond to help you in anyway they can! Very friendly & sociable if engaged! I would highly recommend this hotel!

Yelp
We'll never again stay at Cambria Downtown Old Portland ME! We made a group reservation for four room directly on Cambrian's website. Upon our arrival, our friends all got their rooms swiftly. Then it was my husband and my turn to check-in. The front deck staffer could not find our room in their computer. The staffer would go into the back room and leave us standing there for serval minutes. Luckily we had our room reservation confirmation number. The Cambria front desk staff finally confirmed they made the mistake. We were understanding that these things can happen. Once to the room they assigned us, we were surprised to open the door to an occupied room! The occupants were as surprised as we were. We went back to the front desk only to be assigned to another occupied room! We had access to two rooms that weren't ours! Good thing we are honest people. Cambria did comp us our room for the stress and bother. We experienced more troubling service at the hotel restaurant Alto the next morning. We waited 70 minutes for our breakfast. There were only 3 tables with guests who were also waiting for their food. We got up and left after 70 minutes. The waiter caught us at the elevator to say our food is at our table. We went back to our table. Our food was stone cold! We couldn't eat it. We asked for the bill and amazingly it came within seconds! Our friend's rooms smelled like pot (no, they weren't smoking it) morning and evening. We could smell it. We could also smell it in the hallway by our room. Ugh! The outside vent was located in the back of the hotel. A great spot to hang out apparently. Get comfortable there's more... Our car was parked in the Cambria hotel valet parking and was damaged with deep, long, scrapes on the front right fender and side. We didn't drive in Old Port except to and from the airport. The valet manager took care of filling out the claim with ease. He shared it happens a lot. He was use to it. I kindly suggested he may want to hire some new valets. Especially after what happened next. The last kicker came when we picked up our rental cars at 3:30 am to head to the airport. The valet was no where to be found, even the front desk staff couldn't find him. Turns out he was sleeping in the bathroom. There were 8 senior citizens in our group. All very kind people. Once at the valet station that morning, the valet was out of sorts, spoke rudely, acted paranoid, and surely hot tempered. At one point he said "I want you to get out of here!" We wanted to get out of there fast, but of course we couldn't because he couldn't function well enough to find our car keys. He was throwing keys all over the place, franticaly asking us what kind of cars we had. He was acting mentally unstable, maybe high? Finally after "40 minutes" of stressful waiting we got our cars. We barely made it on to our flight on time. Our Cambria stay was horrific from start to end. Stay away!

Yelp
After being in a cabin in Acadia for a few days, we were thrilled to check in here! It's so nice. The rooms are spacious. The rooftop terrace is really nice as well. Our kids loved the 3:30 cookies that they set out. It was definitely something we bribed them with for good behavior. " you better listen so you can get a cookie!" Every single hotel staff member was friendly and kind, and that's really hard to come by! I needed honey for some tea since I've got a cold and they were great about getting me a little container if it. We didn't order from the restaurant but it looks very nice. The location is perfect and you can walk to Duck Fat, and many other restaurants. Only two complaints: 1) website we booked from days free valet parking but it's actually $40 a night, ouch! We parked on the street instead. 2) no microwaves in the room. When you have kids, microwaves are so necessary. They let me use a lobby microwave, it just wasn't convenient as this is a large hotel. Overall, if back in the are, we would stay here again!

Yelp
We stayed at the Cambria for 4 nights and, without doubt, can safely say we had a marvelous time there. The staff were very courteous and helpful; the room was excellent with plenty of space; and spotlessly clean when we checked in. The check-in is on the 4th floor but all you do is park in the garage next door and follow the signs. Room service, when requested, was swift and exactly as we requested. The restaurant is EXCELLENT, and the food was, in some cases, better than some of the 5-star restaurants we ate at while we were there. While we were there a wedding reception took place and it was very strictly controlled. At 10:00PM the music was shut off and people dispersed. All very orderly and peaceful after 10:15PM. I will happily recommend this hotel to any of my friends.

Yelp
Lovely! Brand new and ready for us to stay in ~ I did not realize this when I booked but this place just opened and couldn't be more pleased. The reservations and bar area are adorable but the rooms (!) are gorgeous. Great view too! The desk staff were very sweet to us and the car valet was very helpful (although $40 to park - yikes but standard at most hotels in this area of Portland). Whole heartedly recommend!

Yelp
Guests enter from the ground level or the valet parking garage. THE LOBBY IS ON THE 4th FLOOR. I dont understand why there's no signage. I saw a couple of very confused guests. I'm at this a hotel during the off season, December. The staff is bare bones. I think the bartender is also the dining server. Checking in I waited for someone to show up and check me in for 5 minutes. Waiting to be seated at the restaurant I waited 5 minutes for someone to show up. It's a very clean new hotel but Feels a bit sterile.

Jim B.

Yelp
This hotel was terrible with no signage on how to enter...a 4th floor lobby yet now signs in the parking garage or elevator with where the lobby was. Then when I finally got to the checkin desk on the 4th floor they told me that there was a $75 fee for my dog when they had not disclosed that when I made the reservation. The staff was lame in every way as if they had never worked in a hotel before. This place will go out of business quickly

Scott M.

Yelp
Very nice. Modern. At least three outlets and three USB ports at each bedside along with a light switch at the bedside. I recommend.

Ca T.

Yelp
Booked a 1 bedroom suite and it exceeded our expectations. Good sized room with a king bed, microwave, refrigerator, working desk, bar top dining table and a small couch with chaise. The location was perfect for walking to nearby areas: Old Port, Commercial St and Casco Bay ferry. The courtyard is a nice setup with two fire pits, plenty of seating and an outdoor bar. The bed was comfortable, the water made our at home water softener feel like a joke and the staff was very friendly. Would highly recommend this property for your stay.

Yelp
Spent 3 nights here and would recommend this hotel to anyone. Rooms were clean and the staff friendly and helpful.

Kelly L.

Yelp
My fiancé and I stayed in an executive sweet here and had the most fantastic time! The room was newly updated, clean, and beautiful! The hotel in general had a great staff and excellent amenities. The only downside is the on-site parking, which is $40. We managed to find street parking nearby, but were surprised that the hotel did not offer free parking included in the stay. Regardless, we will definitely be staying here again! It's our new favorite spot.

Yelp
A friend from out-of-state came to visit and stayed here. When the room was booked for 3 nights in June 2023, the price was around $230/night but after the 3-night stay in mid-October, upon check-out, he was made to pay $400 per night. This may have been because there were two cruise ships docked in Portland and the city was jam packed with tourists? No explanation was offered by staff. There are no views from any rooms in this hotel - you only see the other hotels all around the Cambria. The rooms are adequate and clean, although the room did have a very strong smell of deodorizer of some kind (may affect someone with MCS Multiple Chemical Sensitivities). There was no coffeemaker, no glasses, no amenities. My friend had to go to the front desk every morning to request a clean towel, since housekeeping never came in to do anything or refresh the towels, etc. Other than that, staff is very pleasant, and their lounge/bar is a very nice place to sit and talk. Oh, and parking is $40 per night and you cannot park in their garage if you leave your dog in the vehicle. The hotel IS pet friendly, so that is a positive.

Meaghan C.

Yelp
Great stay! The concierge / valet guys were SO helpful and accommodating. Every person I encountered was friendly but not overwhelming. Usually I can't wait to sleep in my own bed after a couple nights away, but not this time. Bed was very comfortable.

Gage C.

Yelp
The staff was welcoming and helpful! Beautiful, clean, and spacious rooms. AMAZING rooftop terrace. The food offered for breakfast and dinner was delicious and filling.

Philip R.

Yelp
Horrible hospitality, rude and dishonest. I just checked in and was given a room with a broken window. The room was like a dark cave with the window covered and tapped over with exposed wires coming from the motor on the roll. See pictures below. I immediately came back to the front desk to tell him I would need to be switched to another room. I thought it was curious that 10 minutes earlier at check-in he tried to sell it to me as something very minor and maybe one side of the shades didn't work. Im easy going but this was a fire hazard and completely inaccessible to let in any natural light. He claimed there were no rooms left available (although there were rooms available online) and would call his manager. The hotel manager declined to do anything and said he would help tomorrow...waaaay too late. I was given the option to stay in a broken room or lose my money and go elsewhere. I have initiated a charge back with my cc and after much wasted time I am in a new hotel. The obvious and easy solution would have been to move me to another room. I would never recommend anyone to stay at such a rude establishment. I will be coming back tomorrow for names and contact info to proceed to small claims court. What they did to me was illegal and unsafe besides completely lacking any sense of hospitality by the front desk staff or management.
