(Tasted 12/20/16 TU @ 12:00pm): Yes...you were in the middle of nowhere; just trust your GPS!
For her birthday, a wine-drinking friend and I made our way out to Cambria Estate Winery as we tried to maximize a "2016 Santa Barbara Wine Passport" I purchased earlier in the year, which gave access to over twenty vineyards with various promotional deals. In this particular case, the winery offered a 2-for-1 tasting deal. As I've always said, "Discounts on any kind of alcohol was always a plus in my book"! Was it worth the long drive!?:
Clonal Flight - 5 Tastings ($15.00) - Your selections were two Chardonnays and three Pinot Noirs https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=N9nWAhqckZeH6dgzqEBahA&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw. And unlike many tastings I've partaken in, theirs was less conducive for note-taking (i.e. no available taster notecards or writing instruments). Honestly, wineries do consumers a huge disservice when this easy amenity wasn't provided. Having said that, here were my cloudy tasting recollections. Again, by no means am I an oenophile - just a simple lush who enjoyed wine:
~2014 Clone 4 Chardonnay: Alive with some sweetness.
~2014 Clone 76 Chardonnay: Nice but came off more dry than I liked.
~2014 Clone 4 Pinot Noir: Generally not a fan of this varietal because of its earthy tendencies, it was too "funky" for me with hints of spiciness https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=2oJ7XONnsAQYuYYRhHu0qw&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw.
~2014 Clone 115 Pinot Noir: Too much oak for me https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=E1urSUZYhKi9yX8cITqy-Q&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw.
~2014 Clone 23 Pinot Noir: More bold with hints of chocolate or coffee.
Diversity Flight - 5 Tastings ($10.00) - Your selections were one Viognier, one Chardonnay, two Pinot Noirs, and one Syrah https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=Lufd96KBWcs4_DCfJY6umw&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw. ~2014 Tepusquet Viognier ($20.00): Nice aroma and a crisp finish. I bought one bottle https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=NA8CpDf_Ueeg2di6nrG5wA&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw.
~2014 Clone 76 Chardonnay: Nice but came off more dry than I liked.
~2015 Rose Of Pinot Noir: Fruity and refreshing!
~2014 Bench Break Pinot Noir: Too earthy.
~2013 Tepusquet Syrah: Full body but had odd taste I couldn't place.
Service - We were the lone customers at this time, so we had the undivided attention of the young attractive woman who helped us with our tastings. She was friendly, very informative about the wines and the region, gave decent pours, and dammit...I was smittened by her! Give this young lady a raise; I bought a bottle from her!
Parking (FREE) - They had their own medium-sized private lot - 'nuff said.
Atmosphere, décor, ambience - Before entering, you passed through an open front outdoor patio with a handful of tables and chairs to enjoy a picnic https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=MsAgt8JH71Hy4HJtvoI8sw&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw. Decorated for the holiday season, you walked into a spacious layout with a long "L-shaped" tasting bar to your immediate left that curved and stretched along the adjoining wall. The rest of the area was filled with table displays of merchandise to purchase https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=G9PiwiGLoReis8SKfqizGQ&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw. Plenty of natural lighting came through the large glass windows while electric recessed ceiling lighting filled in the rest. There were no TVs but music lightly played in the background. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=ovLu2Jsfzrj1xcFj8_sqGA&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw
Attire - Business casual out of respect for the art of wine tasting, so I would normally be in a buttoned-up shirt, pants, and covered-toe shoes.
Overall, my afternoon at Cambria Estate Winery was a nice one. Although I was happy to visit a winery I'd never been to, the majority of their wines - except for the bottle I bought - simply wasn't my cup of tea. Please take my criticism with a grain of salt since wine tasting was completely subjective from one person's palate to the next. The service was outstanding, and bottle prices were at standard level. Wine glasses weren't given with each tasting. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $36.00 AFTER discount; no tip required). And, they accepted my credit card of choice...AMEX! 4.0 STARS
