On the suggestion of a friend, we came to see the old lumber mill machines, a museum of sorts and to have a bite to eat including their huge cinnamon roll.
This review is about the restaurant. Beautiful building. The ambiance is very woodsman, with game and antlers throughout. A lot of wood sculptures. Beautiful lamps, large and small tables. Even a few around a fireplace.
On our visit it was pretty empty. But I won't let that take away from the customer service. We were greeted immediately and offered a choice of tables. The menu was pretty simple and straight forward. The prices were similar to other restaurants like this that we've dined at. A little high but not outrageous.
My partner ordered a the 1/3lb cheeseburger and I opted for the Foch and chips. I also tasted their white, sausage gravy that they put on their chicken fried steak. It was pretty good and I'm fairly certain I tasted chicken broth/bouillon in it. It made it slightly different than other typical recipes. It also was not loaded with black pepper, which is a smart move as you can always add pepper but you can't take it away. Even though it was tasty, as I said, I chose the fish and chips.
We sampled each other's food and agree with the assessment here.
The food is very good for "other than fresh" food. The cheeseburger was cooked to a perfect medium, American cheese, onion, lettuce tomato. The patty was the typical frozen patty but tasted fine. The other ingredients were fresh. We would order this again but it's not something special.
The fish was beer battered, better than panko, cod. Four pieces, about 3-4 inches and thicker than most, maybe an inch. The fish was unremarkable. It was definitely frozen but did not taste bad in anyway. It just wasn't as good as I had hoped.
The fries were delicious, hot and fresh. Perfectly cooked.
Portions were good. Not huge but more than adequate.
The cinnamon roll was delicious! And huge! We both took a couple of bites and brought it home. He cut it in 4 pieces and each enjoyed a piece. The roll is soft and doughy. Not in an undercooked way but just as a good roll should be. At first sight, I didn't feel there was much cinnamon but there was plenty in the roll itself. The glaze over the top was very good, not sickening sweet but sweet. And they top it all off with a ball of butter. Very good.
This I would recommend.
Our server was friendly and even laughed at my corny comments. She checked on us a couple of times. Not to much but we never felt like we were forgotten.
The food was 3 star but the ambiance and service boosted it to 4 stars.
I leave you with this thought...
The next time we come in, I'd try some of their homemade dinners. Meatloaf, chicken fried steak... something that is likely prepared and cooked in house. I'm guessing they do a great job with those and I'd try their breakfast as well.
