7 Unforgettable Sleepaway Camp Experiences for Kids

"From the moment they board the camp bus together in Paso Robles, these kids are outside. Set on a protected 260-acre oak woodland, this 80-year-old camp offering keeps kids outdoors and active. Campers range from first grade to tenth and are divided across five sites. Younger kids can expect twice-a-day pool time, along with activities that run the gamut from hikes and geocaching to group games and skits. Older kids also have opportunities for team building and leadership training. A screened dining room is used for meals, but everything from sleeping to showers (leave your hot water dreams at home) happens underneath the open sky."

It's hard to let your kids go, but Camp Natoma is the best place to do so safely and ensure they have a wonderful and magical time. Nothing compares to sleeping under the stars, hiking, swimming, crafting, playing games, singing, teamwork and smores over a campfire. My youngest found a new level of independence and made great friends. My oldest got to sharpen their skills as a counselor in training and made great connections. Upon pickup both immediately asked to go again. We look forward to more camp adventures at Camp Natoma.

Thank you for the best summers of my child hood. From way up on girls hill top, in 1994, to finally getting to CIT camp in 2003. Camp Natoma was the perfect summer haven. From fort building contests, and polar bear swims, to kybo jokes(IYKYK), and campfire songs. Camp natoma was the ultimate camp. ❤️ If I had kids they would be 3rd gen campfire kids, and would definitely be going to Camp Natoma!

Yelp
My daughter just got back from her fourth year and it's already begging to go again next year. There is something so magical for the kids out there, and they are all incredibly well cared for! all of the counselors are incredibly kind, and she especially loves the pool and the hiking. See you next year, Camp Natoma!

Yelp
My son just got back from session 1. He had a blast! Sleeping under the stars, meeting new friends, singing songs. Everything camp should be. He plans to attend next year and has said he might want to be a counselor. (He is only 9- he's got a few years to be a camper still!) My sister went to Natoma for years. She and my son compared memories and except for some new songs and food/candy no longer being allowed in care packages, not much has changed in 20 years. The value is fantastic. I'm very happy with the camp (and so is my son!)

Yelp
My son just came back from his second year in a row. And he's still singing camp songs. These kids are very well cared for. They pay attention to proper hydration and rest. Best part is that they are unplugged, for a week. My son loves his gadgets but he didn't complain once. And sam says "the food is so good" This year is good friend joined him and they both had a great time. I recommend this camp oh and he was able to finish his Harry Potter book!

Yelp
Camp Natoma is the place I belong. The first summer that I spent there I was 18 months old (yes, months) and my mom volunteered as "Nursie", the camp nurse. Since then I spent every summer until I was 23 swimming, hiking, carving soapstones, dressing up in Drama, weaving lanyard/key chains, singing "Little Red Caboose", and playing tricks on each other. Oh, my favorite is sleeping out on an old Army cot, under the stars, talking every night, until we fell asleep, after listening to the angels sing. "If I wasn't a Camp Natoma Girl, if I wasn't at Camp Natoma. If I wasn't a Camp Natoma Girl..hhhmmmm.....There is nothing I would rather be..."

Yelp
This is the ultimate overnight camp. I let my daughter (8 years old) go for a week for session 3. As it was her first sleep away camp, I was nervous the whole time. When she came back she was filled with stories and songs and new traditions. Clearly she had had an amazing time and immediately extracted a promise that she could return next year. Then, a couple weeks later, I had the pleasure to attend camp for two nights as the nurse for my daughter's Girl Scout troop. I so wish I had done the nursing gig first. If I had, I wouldn't have given a second thought to letting her spend a week up there without me. The campsite is beautiful, expansive, covered with plenty of trees and shade, and filled with fun little critters to watch. The counselors are beyond belief - energetic, engaged, excited. Sleeping under the stars is a rare experience for most children nowadays. A week unplugged and engaged in arts and crafts, repeat songs, and nature hikes is invaluable. I cannot praise camp Natoma enough. And I am happy to send my daughter every year until she's old enough to become a counselor herself. I will also be returning, as Nursie, every summer that they can use me! Love to all the staff!!

Yelp
A once in a lifetime camp setting, especially in today's fast paced, technology centered world. A beautiful/serene/rustic setting for kids to be themselves in nature! Excellent, trustworthy staff. Decades of history & traditions. A VERY special place for kids of all ages!!

Yelp
My 2 older daughters attended their first summer at Camp Natoma last year. They came back singing camp songs, speaking camp language, and as happy as can be. I was impressed by how well the camp was run. It was an amazing and life changing experience for my girls. I suspect that they will go back for years to come!

Yelp
My youngest daughter has gone to Camp Natoma two years in a row and is going again this summer. It is a great environment for her. I love that they disconnect from electronics for a week, without complaining. She loves all the activities that are offered (archery was a big hit), she loves sleeping under the stars, swimming, hiking and meeting new friends that she stays in touch with the rest of the year. It is well run and organized. The director, counselors and CIT's are all amazing, friendly, caring people. It's all good at Camp Natoma!

Yelp
My daughter has been going to Camp Natoma for five years; my son will go his second year this summer They both return grounded, happy and tired from all the outdoor amazing activities that the WELL SKILLED counselors do with them! They count the days until they can return for another down to earth camping experience! And in the meantime, they both sing all the songs they learned at camp with glowing faces! I highly recommend this camp for children and teens!

Yelp
I've worked at Camp Natoma for several summers in the past. I witnessed firsthand the amount of personal growth which can occur when a child attends camp. They learn a sense of confidence and independence in an environment not easily recreated in todays information age. When I have kids they will certainly attend Camp Natoma due not only to its location and history but also because of its potential for positive growth in anyone who has spent time there.
