Why Carlsbad in California Is a Prime Spot to Find Flowers - AFAR

"A buzzy New American restaurant downtown centered on open-flame cooking and playful dishes, notable for entirely housemade s'mores and many plates and cocktails garnished with flowers and herbs." - Bailey Berg

Had a family Thanksgiving meal at the Campfire Grill in Massanuten. The atmosphere and decor of the place were great. Our server Nikki did a good job especially when It came to splitting the bill for the different parties. Food took a while to come out but we were a group of 19 so it's understandable. The food was mediocre. I felt like it had so much more potential. Side veggies were tasteless (something out of a retirement home). Butternut squash was a fail! The burgers were small. Overall we had a good time but food was underwhelming.

We came on an off season day and used “Mad Money” to pay for our meal. It started off with our host not being able to tell us if we could use the “mad money” there and not seeing if it did we had to ask our waitress. It was not super busy but definitely people around the restaurant. Our food wasn’t bad but not well seasoned. My salmon just tasted like fish nothing really popping about it but I liked the crispiness of the fish. The potatoes were very bland I hate to say it. I like that there’s pieces of potato in it, but it needed more seasonings. It took well over 10 minutes for our waitress to come back and give us a to go box and our dessert and she never once refilled our drinks. She was pleasant over all, but didn’t have any tables on our side of the restaurant but us so I’m not quite sure why it took so long for check ins and a to go box. With 2 meals, dessert and drinks it cost $80

We were excited to try and actually looking to celebrate and our meal was cold and bland. Ordered a French onion and it was mostly broth and cold. Husband ordered the pot roast cold, mushy, big pieces of celery that you couldn't even cut. I had the chicken pot pie that had no flavor and no chicken. Our server was great and management took off the onion soup and 50% discount for pot roast. Considering no other options at the resort makes it tough to go out for a night. We will be doing a run to the Food Lion and cooking in.

Upon arriving at the restaurant it was a pleasant experience with a friendly and personable hostess who seated us immediately. Our server Madison F explained the specials, giving recommendations and took our orders. Wine, food and dessert were all delicious. The prime rib was outstanding seasoned perfectly and cooked to perfection. Best I’ve ever had. The pork cutlet special was outstanding also and very reasonably priced. We spoke to Gauge the manager when he came by twice to check to make sure everything was to our liking. We will definitely return. The atmosphere and view included deer sightings among the golf course. They even had outdoor seating with fire pits.

Google
Massanutten Resort for owners and guests. The Wine and Dine menu was perfect! We had spinach dip appetizer, base of it tasted like sausage gravy and no apology was given or offer to replace it. The charcuterie board was great! The musician was talented but held back. We could not identify any of his songs and neither could google lyric finder. Charcuterie Board was awesome! Thank You Father YHWH Jesus Christ and Holy Ghost for this place and staff and may they continue to become YOU MADE IT TO BE! Even though they were not busy, staff was lacking in genuineness , maybe tired , long day,

Google
The food was average, especially considering the incredibly crowded restaurant during Christmas. The only redeeming quality was the cornbread. The staff was friendly, but the server was overwhelmed by the number of customers and was struggling to keep up which is understandable during holidays.

Google
Server was nice and polite. Our food on the other hand... half of our dinner sides were served cold and by the time the issue was addressed we had already eaten our protein. My Cat fish was tasty and the salmon was very good. My son enjoyed the Sizzling beer cheese burger.

Google
As with any review from a random consumer, your mileage may vary. You might love this place. We did not. Here’s some of our experience: Breakfast buffet with eggs to order? Not so much on the eggs. They were real scrambled eggs because I did get an egg shell in one bite, but fried egg whites for my 12 year old picky eater turned into French toast sticks which were part of a medium sized and overall mediocre breakfast buffet setup. It looks to be a nice enough place although the bathroom was a bit soiled. The biggest problem was they were heavily understaffed. I couldn’t possibly blame the unsatisfactory service on one of those poor employees who were obviously working hard through a tedious Sunday morning, breakfast shift, but certainly the management could cover the place better for the benefit of all parties. The rest of the food on the breakfast bar was kind of maybe a step above a free hotel breakfast although the sausage gravy and biscuits were not too shabby at all. But for $16 each, we might have done just as well or better going to Waffle House.

Yelp
Been dining here for years. Always great food, awesome service, great atmosphere and live music. Management and staff always willing to accommodate. Looking forward to December 31 2025 reservation!! My whole family really enjoys the opportunity to gather at Campfire Grill every New Year's Eve!

Yelp
We decided to come here with friend's recommendation. To start, there are plenty of parking spaces. We arrived about 5:30 p.m on a Sunday before the crowd. We requested a window seat and got it. There were high top tables, we opted for a booth. I noticed there were 3 tables inside what look like a tent creating a cozy feel. The ambience, vibe and service were great. We ordered the Sizzling Beer Burger. The waitress disclosed it was a 30 minute wait for it and it came out exactly as she said. It came sizzling in a hot cast iron pan. The burger was cut in half and sitting on that cheese. It was definitely a unique, but awesome way to eat a burger. 5 stars there. I ordered the Windmill Pasta light on the cheese. It was good, but wished it was warmer. I don't know if they held my dish until the burgers came out to bring altogether at the same time, but it just wasn't hot. Another person in my party ordered a pizza and liked it, but not wowed by it. Just a basic pizza. Overall, I would come back and try other menu items. At least, it saved us a dark drive outside of the Massanutten Resort.

Yelp
My husband and I visited Campfire Grill on a Friday evening in late Oct., 2025, around 7:30 pm. We were concerned about a potentially long wait time as we didn't have reservations and the restaurant was packed. We need not have worried as we were seated within five minutes, and the server greeted us soon after and offered drinks and their menu. Our plan was to have dinner at the Campfire Grill, and then go over to Base Camp (both Massanutten properties) for drinks and their live entertainment. Hence, at Campfire Grill, we only drank waters, which were delivered with a plate of lemon wedges (nice touch!) Food. My husband ordered the Chicken Pot Pie ($18; our rating, 3.5/5), which was described on the menu as rotisserie chicken and succulent vegetables (as expected, small-diced potatoes, corn, and peas) in Grandma's gravy sealed in a flaky crust. This was served in a cast iron pan. My husband enjoyed the taste of the pot pie, but felt that the quantity of chicken was on the lesser side. For the entree as a whole, the quantity was good. My selection was the Windmill Pasta ($18); our rating, 3/5), described as sautéed chicken breast with broccoli and mushrooms in a smoked Gouda cream sauce over fettuccine. While the sauce and the added Parmesan shavings were tasty, we were disappointed with this entree overall. Unlike the chicken pot pie which had too little chicken, this one had way too much -- and it was rubbery and didn't seem sautéed. Unfortunately, the chicken also crowded out the broccoli and mushrooms; these ingredients, which we were looking forward to, were insufficient. The pasta was also dry, and could've used more sauce. The quantity was large; in fact, we brought back half in a doggie-bag for a later meal which we supplemented with more veggies and sauce. For us, the star of the menu was dessert. Keeping with the theme of the restaurant ("Campfire Grill"), choices included S'mores Cheesecake, Campground Cookie Skillet, or a Bag of Local Apples. We were intrigued by the latter ($10.50, with two spoons, rating: 4.5/5). This featured phyllo dough layered with butter, sugar, and spice, filled with local apples stewed in warm autumn spices (cinnamon, nutmeg), and topped with house-made vanilla ice cream, praline pieces, and candied ginger. This would've been a 5-star rating if the base had been heated longer; it was lukewarm at best. Our server, Geneva, was very good (5/5). She took care of us well, checking regularly to see if we needed anything. As a general observation, they seemed to be somewhat understaffed -- only a few servers seemed to be handling the large dinner crowd and, as the evening went on, many tables weren't bussed for long periods. The ambiance (4/5) was comfortable. There were individual tables and booths, as well as seating at a large bar. The coolest area was a set of family-sized tables in the back room that appeared to be set in a large glamping tent. Parking was free and plentiful.

Yelp
Raw pork chop, over cooked and dry burgers, 40+ min wait time, 4 dollars for kids chocolate milk and 14 dollars for poor cocktails is just a recipe for a really bad time. management not coming to the table was just icing on the cake that they don't care. pork chop wasn't slightly undercooked it was down right raw. save your time and money and avoid this spot. the server being friendly, was the only redeeming quality.

Yelp
Long wait on a Saturday night, but well worth it. I got the center cut steak (medium), green beans, & mashed potatoes. I like supporting the local community, so I always buy a beer from the closest brewery. So in this case, it was a double IPA from Basic City, & it was amazing as well. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
While staying at the Massanutten resort, our family decided to have dinner at this establishment one night. Since this is a resort restaurant we did not have very high expectations. The servers greeted us warmly and were able to accommodate our large party without reservations which we were super grateful for. Multiple people in our party ordered the pot roast, the burgers, the salmon, mac and cheese. When my salmon first came out I was very impressed. The veggies on the side were perfectly seasoned. The mashed potatoes were A-okay. I don't care for leaving the skin in a mash and I am also not the biggest fan of red potatoes (purists know yukon gold is the undefeated champion of a stellar mash, but I digress) ... my salmon had a wonderful sweet Asian teriyaki crust on it which was crispy and rich and fatty as a filet of salmon should be... until I noticed that the rest of this fish was raw and pink inside. We sent our plates of fish back to the kitchen to have them cooked again and they came out okay. The ambiance here is very family restaurant meets log cabin. A couple of people who ordered the pot roast didn't feel too good the next day, I peeped over and that dish did not look appetizing at all. They should really work to spruce it up. The mac and cheese sauce was also on the runnier side, something to work on. With a few improvements this restaurant can easily be a 4 or 5 star establishment. A little bit of attention to detail goes a long way.

Yelp
We absolutely loved this spot. Thankful we got a recommendation from the worker at the chair lift. The views were beautiful and the theming was so cozy. We loved our chicken pot pie, side of french fries, and crispy dr pepper. We will be back in future trips!
google avatar

Yelp
10 tables open and not seating anyone. Turning people away telling them it's an hour or more wait.
google avatar

Crystal N.

Yelp
Service wasn't the greatest bearly seen her. The food was a joke DO NOT order the chicken sandwich, or the salad or their special sandwich. For a resort and the money being spent to just snowboard you would think they would have food to standard. Everything was small portions and look like it came out a bag. The Ambiance was great of course views of the mountain and people doing snow sports.

Yelp
No reservations taken. Too long to wait. We really wanted to try this place. : ( ...............

Yelp
Have been here several times now. Every time the food has been absolutely delicious! My kids love the burgers. I love the salmon. The veggies are always wonderful. The desserts are decadent and so good. We especially like the pretzels and beer cheese appetizer. It's our new favorite spot - just wish it was closer to home!

Diana J.

Yelp
A nice place to get a casual dinner. The drinks and the food were good. The wait for drinks and food was okay. The restaurant was clean. The menu is limited.

Michael M.

Yelp
We were excited to go here, and then we walked in the door. The hostess was miserable and showed no hospitality whatsoever. The server was great. Her name is Madison. Once the food started coming out, it was apparent that they value money over quality. We ordered the beer cheese fries and it was a heavy hand of fries that we were charged $15 for. We ordered dinner which was a half of a rotisserie chicken, that seemed to be cooked yesterday and was incredibly dry. We had a Caesar salad, the dressing was more like a vinaigrette, it was tart and watery. The spinach dip was like a dry cottage cheese base without much flavor. It was chunky like it had been sitting in a warmer all day. We ordered the kids hotdog meal, the hotdog bun was stale and crumbly. We ordered the cornbread, which was more like cake, and came with a cinnamon honey butter that was spoiled and smelled like rotten milk. After bringing attention to the spoiled butter, the waitress agreed it smelled off, put in a new order and served us rotten butter again. We spoke with the manager about it, and he could not smell the rotten butter that the waitress definitely said was off. We were comped the Caesar salad and the cornbread, and we were offered dessert. However, after having spoiled butter from one item, we did not want to continue eating anything from there. We will never return.

Rebecca B.

Yelp
The food never disappoints. Try the cornbread! Services with a smile but, service speed varies.

Yelp
Service was great, eaten here for years and this year food was so-so. Not bad, but previous times the food was better. Pot roast was a bit hard and chicken a bit dry. Not by much, maybe just an off night or being here between seasons. Not discouraged to eat there again as all previous visits were delicious.

Tina G.

Yelp
They recommend reservations, but the restaurant will not take a reservation, even with 6 people. Waitlist closed Waitlist temporarily closed The restaurant only takes walk-ins during this time.

Yelp
I took my daughter and grandsons for lunch. This visit was very disappointing. Our server was not friendly and really did not do a good job. I ordered the catfish, mashed potatoes and green beans. The fish was a bit dry and beans not seasoned. We also had some of the worst cucumber salad we ever had. It was so sour it could not be eaten. The good point is the pizza was very good. The interior is typical restaurant seating, etc. They only accept the gold card Tues-Thur. I guess we are only gold members a couple days a week. Disappointing!!

Yelp
Had lunch here at the Campfire Grill at Massanutten Resort. The restaurant is very nice and clean. Service was okay considering the place was not very busy. We had the Onion Soup and the Teton Forest Pizza. Soup was very good and had a lot of flavor. The pizza on the other hand was not very good. Dough seemed a little raw and did not rise as expected. Flavor was not very good. This place is convenient if you are staying at the resort.

Brooke S.

Yelp
Our first time at Massanutten and the Campfire Grill did not disappoint! Alex was an incredible server. The Pan-Fried Catfish, Mountain Burger, and Bag of Local Apples dessert were all delicious. The mulled wine and bourbon specialty drink were both great. We would definitely come again while visiting the resort.

Yelp
Food took forever. Salads were not very good. Martinis were inconsistent. Sat at the bar.
google avatar

Dylan J.

Yelp
The interior of the restaurant is very cool, reminds you of a cabin as soon as you enter the main area, the mason jars for glasses were neat too. The food was pretty decent for the price, but realistically I wouldn't come back here. The service was very very slow and they were only seating at half capacity the night we went. By slow I mean we walked in and didn't get sat for 10 minutes, then it took another 20 minutes for the server to even come take drink orders, drinks came out 10-15minutes later (just a Coke/pepsi and a sweet tea), then food took even longer, all in all, we spent nearly 2.5 hours in the restaurant for average food.
google avatar

Mali Y.

Yelp
How do you run out of hot chocolate in the winter And why is the burger patty described as being a skillet? I'm not sure what happened to this place, but it ain't good. It used to actually be pretty nice. 2 stars given for comfortable ambience.

Jane S.

Yelp
Food was very good, chicken pot pie, the pork chop, and the pasta with chicken. All very tasty. The Price for our meals was reasonable, in line with what we paid off the resort property. We do not drink , so no alcohol. Service very good., no wait on a Saturday night at 7pm. Was Leary about going due to some of the reviews, glad we went! If we get back, will definitely try again!

Katie S.

Yelp
We love this place, mainly because we never have to wait after church due to the timing and the place is big enough for a large group to sit and dine together which we love. The staff is always great too... but, with the exception of the pizza and burgers which are actually great, the rest of the food is really bland. Some seasoning would take this place to the next level for real!
google avatar

Stephanie E.

Yelp
Everything was amazing! The food, waitress, and the restaurant. My son got the salmon and I got the steak. Both were cooked perfectly.
google avatar

Kanani V.

Yelp
It was still looking the same as last time. A few dirty tables surrounding our table when we were seated. Staff were friendly. I got the buffalo chicken fries again. This time the chicken was trash 0/10. When I bit into all of them it was just air. No real meat. So they changed that or I got a bad chef that day. The burger was good 8/10. I loved the jalapeño jam on it! We waited for a while when we wanted our check. Was not a good vibe this time!! Pretty sure I won't be back! They also took the pork rind nachos off the menu.
google avatar

Yelp
New Year's 2024 had a wait list of about an hour, but it was worth the wait. Excellent menu offering, unique atmosphere and live entertainment.
google avatar

Ronnie G.

Yelp
Last night we had dinner there. My mom never ate catfish, I told her depending on how it's done she should like it. Well , when it came out it was in strip form. And let me tell you, IT WAS THE BEST IVE EVER HAD!! The zucchini was perfectly done. Cornbread and smashed potatoes were awesome! I wish I lived here I would be there once a week!
google avatar

Amanda C.

Yelp
I almost didn't try this place because of the low stars, but I'm glad I didn't listen to a few people with bad experiences. We went to Campfire Grill after a long drive to the resort and we didn't feel like driving 20 more minutes to Harrisonburg. Glad we did! The service was great. We were seated immediately and our server came over right away to take both our drink and our food orders. She offered helpful suggestions and everything came quickly. I had a Beyond burger (hard to mess that up, yes) but the fixings were great. Thinly sliced red onion, lettuce, and tomato. My husband had a real burger and it was cooked to his liking (i.e., not well done). We both enjoyed the fries which were piping hot and crispy. All in all, a perfectly fine meal. Very convenient. Lovely ambiance - cabin-like feel, open and airy. Will definitely go back when I come back to the area.

Glenn U.

Yelp
I have been here a few times now. Every time we have had inconsistent service and flat over priced beer. this time was the last time we will ever go back there. they are out of 1/2 the menus on Friday night at 6:30 pm. we complained about the flat beer so they brought us another one and charged us again.

Yelp
Lovely waitstaff and dessert cocktails! Resort prices are always expensive but the food was delicious
google avatar

Yelp
Meh. It's a resort restaurant - not great not bad but fun. The food was okay the staff were nice but I'd find somewhere else more 'me'.
google avatar

Kelly H.

Yelp
Food was delicious! Our server was top of the line making sure we were informed, food tasted great and we had everything we needed even though she was super busy. Restaurant had a great family feel atmosphere. We left happy and full! Food is a little pricey.

Yelp
Very good home cooked meals. Very flavorful!!! The fried green tomatoes with goat cheese is very good with a lil spicy taste.
google avatar

Nate M.

Yelp
Three stars is the perfect rating for the Campfire grill. The food is pretty standard and bland, but based on the customers I saw, it all tracks. This is an older community where we were visiting my wife's great grandmother. We decided on the Campfire Grill for dinner afterwards. I went with the meatball sub and it was just ok. The bread was kind of stale so I just stuck with the eating the meatballs and sipping my drink. The meatballs were edible, but needed everything. Salt, oregano, onion, really just any seasoning would be great. There's a full bar for sitting, multiple dining rooms, and an outdoor patio area. For me this place is more of a happy hour snacking spot than a dinner place. Their patio is huge and has gorgeous views of the golf course and the surrounding hills. If you come here, get a glass of wine or two and just enjoy the scenery.

Kara T.

Yelp
Meh.... It wasn't good. Asked for toppings on the side, the toppings never came. I asked for the toppings again and only 1 of the 2 were brought out. The wild game skillet came out as a burger patty, steamed broccoli, potato and onion, not as the different types of meat described in the menu (bison, elk, wagyu). Mac and cheese was ok, a little on the dry side. I had the bacon jalapeño jam on my burger, but it didn't have much flavor which was disappointing. But hey, the fries were pretty good and the server was nice! It's nothing special, just overpriced food in a resort town.
google avatar

Yelp
We ordered dinner togo here one night while staying at Massanutten resort and boy how I regret it. The food was cold when we opened up the bag. And this is a ~5 minute drive back to our lodging in the resort and maybe 5 minute from car to table and eating. The bacon mac n cheese appetizer was ok. Some parts of it tasted like wet sock. But the parts that didn't tasted fine. The House cut bone in steak which today's selection was Tbone steak and sold at market price was the most disappointing. For $48 the cut was dry, tough, hard, just very bad. The plastic utensils given had a tough time cutting through it. There was not even the tiniest bit of warmth to this steak by the first cut. It was like it was made hours ago, even the fat was solid. The Campfire half chicken had no flavor. Nothing else to say about this other than Costco's rotisserie is way better, in flavor, juiciness, and you get the whole bird. The gumbo taste like rice in watery gravy with little to no seafood. The menu description was "Shrimp, cod, mussels, and venison sausage served in a zesty gumbo." There maybe was one piece of each item above with soupy rice. The Wild game skillet description in the menu was "Blend of wild boar, elk, bison and wagyu in a chopped steak with potatoes, broccoli, onions, and Campfire marinade." Well the chopped steak is just a meat patty. And it was not great, very dry and tough. Not sure what a skillet has to do with this dish with it being named a skillet dish but it was cold. We took it to go so I understand it could be warm not hot by the time we eat back in the lodging but it was just cold. We also got some sides that came in half a pint size, the tomato and cucumber salad and zucchini. Both tasted fine but the portion was tiny. Would not recommend to anyone. Everything was overpriced for the way it tasted.
google avatar

Yelp
Had a wonderful dinner here that we had to order a second appetizer and a third dessert. LOL! Our server, Nicole, was attentive and pleasant. We went over a month ago so I don't recall the names of the dishes anymore, but everything we had was good! See pics, salad not pictured. Tip: let the cornbread sit for a few minutes before you dig in, else it'll crumble. So good, we ordered a second one coz the kids could not stop eating it.

Nicholas H.

Yelp
Service was great, our server was quick and attentive. Food was decent for a resort restaurant. Had the prime rib special, smashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Everything was done well, and the skillet cornbread appetizer will always keep us coming back. Enjoyed the rustic lodge theme. Always a fun place to eat while visiting Massanutten. Would recommend.

Cameron R.

Yelp
Good food and friendly service, campfire grill is a standout amongst what I consider to be other mediocre offerings in-resort
google avatar

Marisa E.

Yelp
Food was amazing. Great service. Pizza tasted like it was cooked over an actual campfire!
google avatar

Kristen M.

Yelp
The food was alright but could have been a bit better in quantity of what you get for the price you pay. Service was wonderful. Our waitress was an absolute sweetheart!

Dia H.

Yelp
Nope nope nope. Maybe the pizza is better. Got the rotisserie chicken and it was dry and burnt. Asked for another piece and they gave me an even drier piece. Veggies were canned

Denise V.

Yelp
Firstly, the only reason that I am giving it two Stars instead of one is because of the delicious cornbread. let me just say, it was an experience I won't forget--mostly because my taste buds are still in shock. To start, the food had all the flavor of a damp napkin. I didn't know it was possible for brussels sprouts to be both overcooked and burnt. As for the duck, I had high hopes. I requested it well-done, only to receive a dish that seemed to have mistaken its purpose for a surprise audition for "Mystery Meat Theater." And the roast beef--oh, the roast beef! It tasted exactly like it came straight from a can. I'm never dining here again.

Mark E.

Yelp
Almost skipped because of the reviews but glad I didn't. Outdoor views were beautiful, food was delicious and the service was perfect. Highly recommend the cornbread and the Kafjord! Also recommend sitting outside if the weather permits.

Katlain C.

Yelp
If I could zero stars I would. The food was not good for the prices that were charged. The specials were majorly overpriced. After asking the waitress about the specials she never offered a price about any of them. We asked the waitress multiple times for a few things that we needed for our party of 8 ( straws, dressing, steak sauce, cheese, etc) that were never brought out until we asked a few times again. We also saw on our bill that a tiny cup of cheese was $3.75 and someone should have been told that was an up-charge. The 20% gratuity that was added to our bill ended up being almost $55 and the service was worth $10. Overall for the restaurant to be right on Massanutten Resort you would think the service would be superb yet it felt less than adequate.

Paul C.

Yelp
Everything Food was good Service was Good could have been a little faster. Wait to long

Yelp
Great food and attentive staff. Decent parking. Open and welcoming atmosphere. Probably very good for families

Yelp
Busy. Don't be in a rush. The food tasted good and the restaurant is what you would expect for a golf course.
