I'd like to start of by saying the location and all the staff (except the manager) were great. I would be giving this 5 stars if it weren't for my experience with their manager. This is my second and last time here. We arrived here on 10/29/2021, Friday night around 9:00PM and were able to do a late check in as there was a reggae concert going on. Our late arrival paperwork only had 2 tags for the vehicles (we had 3 vehicles).
In the morning, we flagged down a woman and male in a golf cart to ask about our third parking tag. They were extremely pleasant and we loved them. They instructed us to go to the main office and advised us if no one is there, we can knock, wait, or come back later in the day to get my tag. When we got to the office, there was a sign that they will be back after cleaning so my group decided to head out to Joshua Tree, enjoy our day, and get our tag when we came back.
When we came back around 5:00PM, I was driving through the entrance at 5mph. There is a stop sign where the walkway to the front office is and someone walked out of the office but did not cross and turned his back toward me. I figured this person was waiting for me to go, so rather than stopping at the stop sign, I rolled through it at 4-5mph. The manager stopped me and this was our conversation:
Manager: Hi
Me: How's it going?
Manager: Is there a reason you didn't stop at the stop sign?
Me: What's that?
Manager: You had to stop at the stop sign then proceed only, is there a reason you didn't stop?
Me: I believed he was letting me go.
Manager: You still got to stop at the stop sign [my music starts playing and didn't hear what he said].
Me: Sorry, what was that last part? [I muted my radio]
Manager: You had to stop at the stop sign and proceed with caution.
Me: Yeah, sorry, I thought he was letting me go.
Manager: Okay well you can make a U-turn and the exit is right here.
Me: I already have a spot over there, sir. [The person who stopped and let me go stops and looks at us for a few seconds but continues walking]
Manager: Where's your tag?
Me: We didn't get one, we were a late entry last night.
Manager: Did you pay for camping?
Me: Yes we did.
Manager: Okay because you need a tag for your vehicle.
Me: There wasn't one in the drop box.
Manager: There wasn't one in the drop box, did you come today to check in with us?
Me: You guys were closed this morning when we left.
Manager: Why because we open at 8:30.
Me: No one was there.
Manager: At 8:30?
Me: Yeah.
Manager: I was there all day.
Me: We left around 9 or 10.
Manager: Okay, so.
Me: Yeah, the sign said you guys were closed for cleaning.
Manager: Yeah then you wait and come back, so park there, walk back, and get your tag.
Me: I believe my friend over there is doing that for me already.
Manager: Well, lets not second guess, lets park there and we'll check in.
Me: You got it.
Manager: Thank you.
Me: Thank you very much.
Manager: You're welcome, or you can leave, not my problem.
Me: Sorry, sir? I didn't mean to like... [he cuts me off]
Manager: You know what, just leave, vacate out and I'll make sure your friend gets a refund too, go pack up your s*** and leave. Go. You get 15 minutes to pack up because I'm telling you to slow down and stop at the stop sign because that's what's written in policies.
Me: Yeah, sir, I [he cuts me off again]
Manager: Also when you signed up, any rude or disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated.
Me: Sir, I wasn't trying to be rude.
Manager: You are being rude and being condescending, I told you to stop, proceed with caution, you're second guessing and questioning what I have to tell you.
Me: Can we like roll this back a little?
Manager: Nope, go pack up, I'll tell your friend too.
I stayed by the office to speak to a cashier and see if I can speak to someone else about this, all over rolling through a stop sign at 5mph, but the cashier was very nice and apologized as he was the manager. I asked if there's another manager or someone else I can talk to about this as we just wanted to cook dinner and relax for the night. The cashier informed me that the owners were not available as they were recently involved in a traffic accident and ultimately said he had the final word.
When I got back to our site, my friends told me the manager followed them and stared at them. Then the manager was saying I was being rude and condescending and I need to learn how to talk to people. Ultimately the manager said we can stay, but my group was so appalled by how the manager handled the situation that we decided to drive 2-3 hours home rather than stay. I have this all recorded (video and audio) on my vehicle's dash camera.
We loved our previous visit minus some minor hiccups, and we were bringing new people out on this trip to show them the campsite and enjoy Joshua Tree. I will never be recommending this place and have since rescinded all my recommendations. A simple "Please stop at all posted stop signs for safety reasons" would have been effective.
