The Best Hotels and Resorts in Banff, Canada

"An unstuffy, contemporary lodge on the town’s main street that channels Nordic-lodge design throughout its rooms and outdoor spaces, offering particularly attractive loft suites with full kitchens, dining areas, and fireplaces. The property features Scandinavian-inspired amenities such as saunas and a glacier plunge tub, sources in-room toiletries from local brands, and hosts a casual on-site café serving flatbreads and dips. Minimal accessibility features are a consideration, but proximity to Banff Avenue shopping makes it a convenient, nature-adjacent choice." - Laura Studarus Laura Studarus Laura Studarus is a writer, traveler, and photographer from Los Angeles, California. Canalta Lodge is the perfect home base for visiting Banff and the surrounding areas. The place is clean and comfortable, the staff are helpful, and you can’t beat the daily smores! |Our family of 4 stayed in a double queen room. It was a good size and we appreciated the fridge and microwave. The best part was the hot tub, cold plunge, and sauna for relaxing after a long day of adventuring. It’s an easy walk to downtown Banff and there is ample free parking in the back. It is also very close to a playground that has a basketball court and sports equipment available for free. While I do wish that the breakfast menu varied day to day, there really isn’t anything to complain about. It would have been nice if there were laundry facilities. All in all, we would stay here again.

The Canalta met all my expectations and exceeded in a few areas. The reception staff were a breath of fresh air after 3+ weeks of travel and 5 different hotels. This wasn’t the most expensive or fancy hotel of our trip, but it was the most friendly. A big shout out to Phoebe, Anna and Mammon… for their great smiles, help with transfers, restaurant and activity recommendations, and bookings. |The hotel was very clean, good beds and bedding, good shower and towels. Our room was quiet. The hot tubs, sauna and ice plunge were clean and well maintained. The breakfast was adequate. The rooms have complimentary Nespresso machines and pods. |The hotel is 20 minutes walking from downtown, or you can take the convenient public bus. Ask if they have complimentary bus passes.

We stayed for three nights as part of a month long Canada trip, and had a great experience here|Rooms are clean, quiet and very comfortable|There is a nice courtyard area with seating, sauna, hot tubs and cold plunge: great place to meet other guests|Breakfast is OK if a rather limited choice of cooked food. But it's self service and quick and there are pancake options that I didn't explore|But the stand out feature of this place is the staff. They are all extremely friendly and helpful, by the end we were feeling like family

This hotel was in a great location, everything was clean, they had a delicious free breakfast, and the employees at the front desk were so kind and helpful. I stayed in a regular room with 2 queen beds with my family. My sister, who has 6 people in her immediate family, stayed in a larger suite with 2 bathrooms and a kitchen. It was perfect for her family. We stayed during a time when the weather was very hot. The air conditioner in our rooms had trouble keeping the rooms cool. However, I understand many hotels in Banff don’t even have air conditioning. The only other con I have is the bathroom in my regular room was small. Overall it was a great experience and I would definitely stay again.

Google
Great price for a new, nicely decorated, comfortable room with a little balcony. Everyone who works there is so nice and accommodating. The free breakfast is great and the underground parking was easy and convenient. I loved having a coffee bar with my fancy coffee there, along with mixed drinks, too. We had a really great stay!

We had an amazing time staying here. The staff were impeccable and so kind. From the front desk, to the bartender, to the cleaning staff everyone was wonderful. I want to specifically shout out John at breakfast. We spoke to him every morning of our trip and he definitely was one of the highlights of our trip starting each day off so positive. The complementary breakfast was really good. He was so sweet with our baby as well. The rooms were spacious and clean. My only complaint would be that the bathroom was extremely small compared to the room and you could barely open the bathroom door without running into something. The location to the main town strip was great. I loved how walkable everything was. It was a little bit further on the outskirts of the town (about 20 min by foot) but that didn’t bother us at all and we enjoyed the scenic walk. Also I really appreciated them providing a pack n play and high chairs for our baby. Would 100% stay here again and will recommend to friends.

We stayed for 4 nights in a 2 queen bed 2 story loft with bunk beds, kitchen, and 2 full bathrooms. It was the perfect size, and having 2 full bathrooms( 1 on each floor) was a plus! My husband and I traveled with our older children for a total of 6 in the loft . The loft was very clean and lighting was a bit dim for us, but we got used to it. The free breakfast was an added plus and was yummy. We were usually there right when it opened at 6am because we started our days very early. The breakfast choices of eggs, sausage , potatoes, yogurt parfait maker etc were plentiful . The kids loved the free s’mores from 4-7pm . The location was wonderful, and we enjoyed our walks to the center of downtown Banff. It’s at the quiet end of Banff Ave. We found free parking behind the hotel for our rental car. The staff at the front desk and at breakfast and everyone else we encountered were very helpful and pleasant. We enjoyed the lobby area at night to play cards and games. We highly recommend staying here for families for the price especially because of the size of the loft, free breakfast, and location. Remember to book ahead ! Thanks for making our trip to Banff even better !

Google
Great experience staying with family. Good location - 15 min walk down the road to the town centre with restaurant options on the way. We had the huge loft room which gave plenty of space for 4. Good breakfast and loved the hot tubs and plunge pool. Staff were also great. The lounge area had a great feel with the bar, smores in the afternoon and the fire. Improvement points - the utensils in the kitchen could be much better - no sharp knives or scissors! Some of the fittings like lights and blinds need attention as they are loose. Also the bathrooms were strangely dark and need better lighting and ventilation. No need to pay for parking - we just used the road behind and there's a back gate so you can unload and gain access. We did leave luggage on our final day whilst we went out. We were asked to leave it by the door to the staff office and were told it would be put away. When we came back it was still there... Lucky no one took it - a better system is needed to avoid things going missing. Overall a great stay and we would do so again.

Yelp
The accommodations were exactly what we were looking for as a family. We had a loft room with kitchen and it was great for making breakfast before heading out to explore for the day. We also enjoyed the hot tubs and cold plunge.

Yelp
Wow! I love this place! Great location. It's about a 15 minute walk into the heart of downtown Banff and all the shops and restaurants, and I appreciate that it's a little removed from all that busyness. There is a nearby bus stop too. I love all the amenities here. The hot tubs (they have two) are delightful and they also have a cold plunge pool. I did their cold plunge challenge, where they have a timer set for 3 minutes. I felt amazing afterwards! I love going back and forth between the hot tubs and cold plunge pool. They also have a sauna outside too. They offer free S'mores every day for happy hour, and supplies so you can roast your marshmallows by the fire pit outside. Lots of seating outside and I really enjoyed sitting outside and reading. They also offer board games to play and have a lot of indoor and outdoor seating, so many options of where you can be. They have a full bar with a nice selection. Delicious happy hour wine deals! I love their red wines. The food is really good here too. They have a really nice breakfast buffet and it's included with your room. Pancakes, eggs, sausage, yogurt, juices, pastries, and more. The bar serves snacks and other food throughout the day and evening. I really enjoyed their charcuterie board. So fresh and delicious. Our room/suite was very spacious. Two queen beds and a living room area with a sofa and fire place. The beds were pretty comfortable but not amazing. We had a microwave and refrigerator, and I loved the espresso machine. We also had a dining table. The bathroom had lovely shampoo, conditioner, and body wash from a local company. My only suggestion is that I wish we had more storage options to unpack our clothes. There were some hangers to hang a few items and there was 1 drawer in the nightstand. I wish we had a dresser. Excellent and friendly staff. I really enjoyed the vibe of this place. I would definitely stay here again.

Yelp
We loved this hotel! It fit all out needs perfectly. The room was clean and big. The outdoor hot tub was so nice! AND they have complimentary s'mores every evening, which was a great suprise.

Yelp
For our first night in Banff, just stopping through on our way up to Jasper, we spent the night at Canalta Lodge. Check-in was fast and easy. We opted to pay the nine dollars for the underground parking as opposed to chancing it with free street parking. Banff is quite a busy tourist destination and we didn't want to hassle with our rental car. I loved that they offered a s'mores happy hour where you could roast your own s'more around the fire in the courtyard. They also offered happy hour beer and wine specials at the hotel bar. The hot tubs, sauna, and cold plunge were a definite bonus. As for the room, it was clean, modern, and spacious. The bed was comfy and I appreciated the espresso machine. And we enjoyed the complementary breakfast in the morning, especially the self-serve, on-demand pancake machine. All in all, a really nice place to stay, and within walking distance of the main downtown Banff attractions.

Yelp
We stayed here for a wedding and it was amazing. The staff was wonderful, parking was easy, the rooms were always cleaned and the outdoor area is so fun. The breakfast wasn't great, neither were the other food options during the day, but the experience was fantastic and we'd definitely stay there again.

Yelp
The Canalta Lodge was an awesome base camp for our weekend winter stay in Banff. It was an easy drive from the Calgary airport and is located at the end of the tourist district in Banff. You can walk downtown but you'll probably want to drive. They have a heated parking deck which was very convenient. We were promptly checked in and our room was spacious, comfortable and had all the modern conveniences we would want in a hotel. They had fun stuff to do in the lobby, snacks and drinks, and they had multiple hot tubs and a sauna to enjoy (those were real selling points). We really enjoyed our stay and would return.

Yelp
Don't choose this place if you try to get sleep at 22:40 especially when u travel with children

Yelp
I was having a hard time deciding on where would be best to stay for our 3 nights while in Banff and went back and forth between a few places. I am quite happy that I ended up going with Canalta Lodge. It was the PERFECT accommodation for our family of 4 which includes 2 very energetic 4 year olds. Opted and splurged a little for the 2 Queen room with a kitchenette and loft bedroom. It was awesome! We were able to do a bit of cooking. There were 2 bathrooms (very helpful!), nice sitting spaces, ample area for our kids to play, and a little balcony. It was a really nice home away from home. The beds were very comfortable too. There is an included hot breakfast every morning with enough options to have a different meal for a few days. I love that there's a café on premises too. They do smores in the evenings and will light the fire for you. Also a couple of hot tubs and a sauna outside to enjoy. Recommend paying for the underground parking as it's just more convenient. The customer service was great! They brought me some butter when I realized I didn't have anything to cook with. Also at my request did some light cleaning and brought some amenities we needed when I called down. Love that it's dog friendly also! If you plan on coming to Banff, don't want to be in the middle of downtown, but also still walking/bus distance.. check out Canalta Lodge!

Yelp
If you are looking for a high quality, cozy, warm welcoming, log cabin in the woods with fire burning vibe in a classy hotel then look no further! This hidden gem in the heart of downtown Banff is a Buffalo Plaid lovers dream! The hotel front desk clerks were so helpful, friendly, upbeat & just good people! They were especially helpful in retrieving our ski equipment that was delivered for my sister & I to use & sent back after we finished on the slopes & went back to the hotel. At this hotel if you are fitted for skis, boots, snowboard, helmet, & ski poles in town, all of your equipment is sent to the hotel for you to pick up & take to the slopes (my sister & I went to Sunshine to ski) My sister & I were surprised by a very nice upgrade to our room which was super kind & generous of the hotel staff! The hotel room was spacious, super cozy, welcoming, clean, & wonderful! The upgrade included a refrigerator with cream in it for coffee ( a very thoughtful touch), pots & pans, a little electric stove top, & a mini Nespresso machine with 3 mini Nespresso pods! The room also included Nespresso espresso cups & regular Nespresso coffee mugs, all glass! They were delicious! The beds were super comfy (we had 2 queen beds) as well as the pillows! The body lotion & face wash were all from a local shop in downtown Banff ( I love locally used items that places promote! Always shop local!) They also have a cute bar near the front desk that offers specialty made drinks as well as complimentary S'mores in the evening! Outside is a mini fire pit used to toast the s'mores or just enjoy, dry sauna, & outdoor hot tub all wonderful amenities that we took part in, especially from a long day on the slopes! We woke up early for breakfast which was very nice! It has everything you need to start your day: yogurt, oatmeal with brown sugar & raisins, scrambled eggs, sausage, mini potatoes, & make your own pancakes with a pancake machine! Everything was delicious! Their coffee is also a must have! Overall this is a fantastic hotel that deserves more attention & recognition! I have nothing negative to say other than if you don't sleep here, you're missing out on one of the best hotels in Banff! Truly outstanding!!!

Yelp
We stayed at Canalta Lodge for a weeklong ski trip to Banff over New Years and had a great experience. Long before we arrived, my wife emailed with the concierge, Lawrence, to ask many questions about activities, parking, amenities, etc. Lawrence provided great insight and was always prompt and friendly in his responses. When we arrived, we first noticed the great common areas of the lodge. The lobby feels much more like a lounge, offering a great common area for guests to hang out and relax. Overstuffed chairs, couches, tables and work stations, fireplaces, a coffee bar that also serves alcohol and snacks all create a great space to spend time with family and meet other guests. Board games for loan and complimentary smores were both really popular and added to the welcoming atmosphere. Just outside the lobby/lounge, a courtyard with fire rings, two spas, a cold dip tub and sauna also became great places to gather and spend time. The cold dip pool also helped with sore joints after long days of skiing. We booked one of the few rooms with a small kitchenette, loft and two bathrooms. For a family of four, including two teenagers, this worked out well. We like to make a few of our meals rather than eat out constantly when on vacation. The kitchenette provided just enough space to prep some basic meals and enjoy some home cooking, although amenities such as paper towels and dishwashing supplies were not provided. A small dining area with a fireplace, large dining table and comfy chairs completed the first level. The upstairs bedroom was large and appointed with two queen beds and a sofa couch. This worked well for our family of four, although it didn't allow our teenagers to sleep in as much as they'd like. A large chest of drawers and multiple areas for hanging bulky clothes provided ample storage areas. Staff was very friendly and accommodating to any requests. Information about area points of interest, shuttle schedules, parking and events was always just a phone call away. Though we chose not to use it, Canalta also offered underground parking for a fee. Had we been receiving fresh snow, this would have been a great option. Ski lockers are also available in the parking garage, which allowed those bulky items to not be transported to or stored in our room. Our only ask would be more attentive housekeeping services. Guests are asked to request housekeeping, rather than it being provided every day. When we did request service, the housekeepers seemed to limit their service to making beds and taking out trash. We noticed that floors and counters were not cleaned and towels were not replaced. We also had to specifically request more soap and shampoo. Overall, we had a great experience at Canalta Lodge and we would definitely recommend it. The town of Banff and entire Banff area is such an amazing place; we can't wait to return.

Yelp
This place is about a 10-15 minute walk to downtown Banff. We got the room that has two floors. It's great for a group as there is a lot of space. The room has 2 queen beds and a pull out sofa bed. There are 2 bathrooms in the unit. Plenty of space upstairs and downstairs has a kitchen complete with dishwasher, microwave, and good size refrigerator. There is a stove if you want to cook but why? There is also free breakfast but the food stays the same. Just rotate your breakfast picks and you will be okay. They got 2 hot tubs which is good get in after activities and walking all day. There is also a cold plunge challenge and the people that tried it failed. No prize on the cold plunge just bragging rights. Parking is under the building and has extra charge. I highly recommend getting the parking as the street parking is limited and Banff weather changes quick. Rain, snow and hail in June. Pack an umbrella just in case. The staff is very nice and the lodge is clean. I highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Very noisy rooms close to hot tub. stays noisy till after 11. Stay in pool side rooms only if you are a night person

Yelp
Canalta Lodge was a superb place to stay. Loved the room and bar. Hot tubs out back were a little crowded but still worked out well. Will definitely stay there again.

Yelp
4.75 stars! It was our first time to Banff and the Canalta Lodge ended up working the best for us. If it's your first time to Banff and you fly into Calgary. You'll definitely need a car as it was about 1.5 hours from the airport to the hotel. There's also a fee to enter the town the I didn't think about. The Canalta was recently renovated. It's located a good 15-20 minute walk from downtown Banff. It's walkable during the cold weather or you can drive or take the shuttle. We arrived between 6-7PM and were able to park our huge rental SUV in the heated garage. Just don't forget your pass code to get in! It gets packed in there at night, but not enough that you won't have a spot. The hotel has 4 levels. On the parking lot level, there are lockers for you to store your ski/boards, as well as guest laundry facilities, always a plus when traveling. I think it costs C$2-5 to wash and dry your clothes. We stayed in room 338. Our room had 2 standard double beds, a tv, mini fridge, coffee maker, microwave, and a tiny closet to hang things on. It wasn't huge, but it was enough space for the 2 of us during our 4 day stay in Banff. The heat wasn't working in our room so the temperature stayed between 66-67 degrees which wasn't terrible especially since the beds were warm. The bed was clean and comfortable and I had many good sleeps. Decor is modern cabin rustic vibes and I loved the yellow lantern on the nightstand. The wifi worked great in our room and I was able to keep in touch during the Christmas holidays. Walls were thing so you could hear noise in the hallway and from other rooms, but it was mostly quiet. We had partial views of the mountains, and the other side of the hotel so we kept our blinds drawn when we were in the room. The lobby is super cute. They were all decorated for Christmas. Plenty of seating and tables, comfy couches to pull up and read a book by the fireplace. I didn't do the hot tubs as I didn't have a bathing suit, but it looked so inviting during the cold weather! Breakfast was 6-10AM. They had eggs, potatoes, breakfast meats, porridge, and some cold items like cereal, pastries, and chia seed pudding. Everything was good and I even took a chia seed pudding as a snack for later. There's even a coffee snack bar for late night eating or to get your caffeine fix. The staff were very friendly and nice. It must be hard taking care of other people's needs during Christmas, but they did everything with a positive attitude and were genuinely kind people. Overall, I enjoyed our stay here and wouldn't hesitate to book this spot again in the future!

Yelp
Thoroughly enjoyed my 5 night stay at the Canalta Lodge! Recently renovated, Canalta has a modern/cabin-y/homey feeling to it. The breakfast in the morning has a large variety, the whirlpool hot tubs are awesome and clean, and the gym is a pretty decent size as well. Staff was nothing but kind and welcoming. Parking is fairly reasonable at $7 CAD/night inside their heated parkade under the hotel. Would definitely recommend Canalta to any travelers to Banff!

Yelp
I love this hotel, I've stayed a few times with my kids and now I have an upcoming trip next week as well and it's reminded me I should've posted reviews before...... They used to have an incredible hotel manager called Damian from Ireland I miss him but I'm sure it's going to be an amazing stay, very new and clean and the price is great and the fact that the incredible continental breakfast is included is just amazing. Thank you so much!!!!

Jeanne S.

Yelp
Poor lighting especially in the bathroom. Two lights were not working upstairs (rm 320). Downstairs furniture was very uncomfortable. A wooden bench bolted to the floor is awful. Stairs are very narrow, the metal strips hurt your feet. Had to walk sideways. Lots of noise from the street early from buses out front and also construction noise from next door. Front desk personnel were very helpful. Left purse at breakfast and a worker returned it.
google avatar

Kelly F.

Yelp
Stayed one night on my journey from Alaska to Colorado. The staff is friendly, rooms are clean and the bed was perfect for me. My only suggestion would be to add a bit more lighting to the queen rooms. There is a small bedside lamp and reading lights on the headboards but difficult to see when packing in the dark. The breakfast is included in the price of the room. A varity of hot and cold food as well as coffee and juices are a good start to the day.

Yelp
We spent six nights here over winter break. The lodge has some good and bad. The good: the little coffee and win bar - convenient, friendly and nice offerings. If you need a later check out, the have a nice $20 fee that lets you stay until 3pm - much appreciated! The bad: the breakfast was a bit bland, but decent and easy for a family. We opted for a kitchenette and in retrospect, it was not worth the extra coin - the range was difficult to operate; the glassware, dishes and utensils were very limited making it difficult to prepare meals. Also, the tub did not drain well. The staff was helpful (when not too busy) and parking was convenient (when not full).

Mary Jane B.

Yelp
Good place to stay on the main road. Great for families. Hot tubs. S'mores at night. Nice breakfast

Amy K.

Yelp
We shared out vows in Banff this past week and Canalta was the perfect stay. Lawrence at the conceirge/front desk was so communicative and helpful and the manager himself was amazing at check-out. I almost don't want to write this review so I can keep this gem to myself. There are so many small and big details from hot tubs and the sauna to breakfast to board games to the bar to smores and fire pits. The list really goes on. It feels like a cabin trip but with the amenities and ease of a hotel. We came with a small but diverse group of friends from college, parents, and a dog and everyone felt accommodated and enjoyed the stay. If and when any issues came up, they went above and beyond to make everything right. I'm blown away, already missing the trip, and we will definitely be back! If you're debating it, consider this your sign to book.

Yelp
Great place to stay at in Banff!!! Loved the awesome quotes everywhere in the hotel, their attention to detail was spectacular. Very clean and very comfortable hotel! Tyler at the front desk was very helpful. Breakfast was AWESOME which is included in your stay. Highly highly recommend this place to anyone staying in Banff!!!

Yelp
We took a new year trip to this super cute town! I could not be more glad that we chose to stay here! Extremely cute decorations during Christmas, and plan covered wall paper rooms warm your heart! The manager, Damian from Ireland, who is very helpful, professional, kind and friendly! I don't think they can have a better manager who is great with customer service! They also have a little coffee shop/lunch place, that you can find great food and coffee. This little place also sells drinks! I definitely will be back!

Yelp
This hotel has always been where we book when staying in Banff. They have a clean establishment but I was extremely disappointed to see that guests were not even encouraged to follow the mandatory masking bylaw. Not sure this will be a stop in the future if they aren't going to make this a priority.

Yelp
Had a really nice stay at the Canalta Lodge! The lobby was warm and welcoming. There was a fireplace, plenty of dining space, a coffee shop, and tons of boardgames to play. Our room was spacious, sheets were crisp and clean, and we had a lovely view of the back courtyard. Staff was very courteous. I would definitely stay here again!

Ashley C.

Yelp
The staff were great, which is the only reason why I gave two stars. But for $264 a night it's way over priced. I get there are restrictions, but none of the amenities were available. If you can't give the guests the full experience you should reduce your price, because the room itself, not worth it. Bed is super springy and you can hear it when you move. Honestly, way less then impressed on this one.

Gregg Z.

Yelp
We stayed there just last week for 3 nights. It is on the edge of town so you get a good walk when you walk downtown. So pretty good location. Room we had was a king size bed wished it had a sitting chair in it. The staff are friendly and one of the breakfast attendants is very good. He actually greets you and asks to take your plate away. Breakfast selection is good with eggs, potato, bacon, sausage and cold cereals. Over all a good spot.

Yelp
We chose Canalta for our family vacation because it was one of a few that had availability for the entire time we would be in Banff. And the reviews and pics from fellow travelers on Tripadvisor were good. Upon checkin the room assigned to us was not great, ac was broken on a very warm day. Front office staff was accommodating and replaced our room, but they only had king room avail. So we switched to 2 king rooms for 2 nights until a double room was available. The king beds were more comfy than the 2queen. The size of the room is generous. Though lacking in chairs. Loved the shampoo and conditioners, peppermint makes scalp tingly. Breakfast was nice. Though a waffle or pancake maker would be a nice addition. The staff were all very attentive and helpful. Hotel itself seems recently renovated. Parking isnt free but not too much and convenient. Alternatively, street parking maybe available. We liked using garage though.

Sari L.

Yelp
Extremely modern, beautiful art everywhere, clean facilities, good breakfast, comfortable rooms. Would absolutely stay here again.

Nick L.

Yelp
My family and I went to Banff recently and stayed at Canalta. I was disappointed that the pool and facilities were under construction and was not informed. However because of the service of the staff there I would stay again in a heartbeat. The snack bar attendant was so nice and attentive though I forgot his name. One of the front desk managers, Phoebe, was extremely helpful and provided excellent service. Another front desk manager Surresh, I think, went beyond expected service. We called a taxi to go into the downtown main area. Surresh was there early for the night shift. After waiting for what seemed like an eternity, Surresh before his shift began offered to drive us into town. Its that kind of service and attention to detail that memorable trips are made of. Banff is so beautiful, we will visit again. I would stay at another place but because of their service, I will definitely stay there again. Nick and Josephine

Yelp
great place to stay in Banff! Clean, friendly staff, amazing continential breakfast. Fun camping theme with attention to details. The outdoor hot tube and lounge area was under construction while we were there but looks like it will be awesome and one of the best in the area. Would stay here again
